Flack, Roberta - Do What You Gotta Do Lyrics

Man, I can understand how it might be
Kind of hard to love a girl like me
I don't blame you much for wanting to be free
I just wanted you to know
I loved you better than your own kin did
From the very start
It's my own fault for what happens to my heart
You see I've always known you'd go

But you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean I'll never kiss your sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Just find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can

Well, I know they make you sad
They make you feel so bad
They say you don't treat me like you should
Folks got ways to make you feel no good
I'd guess they've got no way to know
I've had my eyes wide open from the start
And boy, you never lied to me
And the part of you they'll never see
Is the part you've shown to me

So you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean I'll never kiss those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Just find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me
Come on back and see me when you can

I know just how each of you feel and could not have expressed it more eloquently! I have heard and appreciated her commercial offerings and collaborations with Donny Hathaway and Peabo Bryson. However, In my fantasy I feel like I have a secret; Iike I am the only one who really knows her because of the first 3 Albums that for me, encapsulates the realest and truest Roberta Flack; First Take, Chapter Two, and Quiet Fire. How in the world could a 7, 8, 9 year old so completely identify with her sound? How could this connection last for over 45 years? I also saw her perform briefly, by chance just once. The impression was great. She was everything that I dreamed she'd be. I am a Male Indie Artist, but beyond Stevie, Donny, Peabo, Luther, Al Jarreu and the like, Ms Roberta is the most influential of all. Her music, her delivery and tone set me on my path and is the epidemy of timeless beauty.

she certainly knows what hurting feels like.

    YEAH <3

One of my all-time favorite singers Roberta took you to places that you did not know existed she was that good. Never got her recognition that she deserves, when you have no talent idiots in the Hall of fame and she is not, what's wrong with this picture?..I loved this song the best. This was my first ❤ heart 💔 broken song. Played this album so much that I wore out the grooves on 3 albums. I was a mess. Her name was Madelyn Lewis, she put the biggest hole in my ❤ heart. I hope she had a great life...Peace and 💘 Love.

Did music radio for over 30 years. Always found a place for this beautiful song. The clarity, depth , and emotion touches the heart. Love for a lifetime.

  12. G.... S....

a masterpiece ... timeless ... an heroic piece of singing ... this is what true Art is all about

  13. D.... P....

Never have I heard a version of this song that even comes close. This is SO beautiful. I'm so touched by the comments. So many hearts were touched by this beautiful performance. How I miss this kind of TRUE MUSIC.

  14. M.... B....

One of the most touching parts of this song is when she says “come back and see when you can” those are my thoughts every time my Aaron walks out the door to go home. I love you Aaron so come on back and see me when you can.

  15. M.... B....

Mr. Archer god loves you and I love you. Don’t know you but you are my brother in spirit

  16. a.... ....

I played this album to death as a high schooler. I had no idea what she was talking about, but I FELT it. Now I'm a grown woman and realize that most of Ms. Flacks' music has been the soundtrack of my life/relationships. This song especially.

  17. M.... G....

    anna fucking green

  18. P.... E....

Fine version of the great Jimmy Webb song but I must admit the Four Tops do it best for me.

Did someone just tear my heart out with a meat cleaver? She is the absolute best and for once the cliché is true that there are no superlatives strong enough to describe the magic of her artistry.

dj don bentley Roberta was in Philly last summer. She’s aged and was fragile. I so respected the artist she was. I was delighted to see her as a legacy.

I needed him to be real, often and just to be real. a Donny Hathaway production.

  24. E.... L....

    CLASSIC!

    Them drums.

  26. N.... B....

My mother had this album on repeat during her divorce. I know all of the songs by heart.

  27. A.... A....

Although I did enjoy the music that Ms Flack produced, and the work that she did with Donnie Hathaway and Pebo Bryson that got radio play, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE PIECES OF MUSIC AND LYRICS:  First Take, Chapter Two, and Quiet Fire. I learned at an early age to adore the art that I would go on to share because of Roberta Flack. Impeccable music and lyrics. emotional delivery to make one's heart and soul ache.

  28. M.... ....

All the other artists I've heard that remade this song did it with an uptempo beat. But Roberta's version is the only one I know of that is slowed down...and a song like this is meant to be sung that way...it's supposed to be sad, a woman losing a man she loves because he wants something else but isn't sure what that someone else is. Beautiful and the very best version of this song.

    M.... ....

MzJanuary thank u the break down was abt to look up the lyrics. 👍👍👍

    M.... ....

not so sure ...the lyrics are quite 'measured'. they dont have to be taken in the ultra sad way as here. this is my fave version too (absolutely love it)  along with nina simone who had a completely different vibe. for me it is a draw.  'see you then' also by j webb is no contest . roberta is definitive in that song.

  29. M.... S....

    THANK U

  30. A.... C....

In the 70s my girlfriend Tanya gave me this album and everytime I hear this song it brings tears to my eyes I miss you Tanya Forever Yours Tony

  31. D.... J....

I was 11 years old when I first heard this song. Fell in love for the first time in my love  at 32 and fully understood this song.  I'm 57 now and the love is still there with a complete understanding of what Roberta was saying. God help me!

  32. R.... A....

Hi everybody! Hope all is well with all of you! Listening again and feeling the same vibe that this music always gives me! The year is half done and I am doing great and im hopng everone in this stream is to!

  33. R.... A....

please, please the 17 down votes tell me where in your hearts does this cause you to down vote this? The raw emotion, the lyrics, the content, the syntax. There must be a hole in your chest where your heart should reside and an emptiness in your souls

    R.... A....

R A those down votes are idiot votes.

  34. D.... F....

"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." Pablo Picasso
In the music of Roberta Flack is her gift: and to listen is to receive what she has to give away.

  35. m.... d....

My favorite female singer of all time. If angels sing, they sound like Ms. Flack! "This is KLEO radio and I'm Daddyo."

  36. P.... C....

One of my all time favorite albums!!

    P.... C....

I remember I played this song continuously until my mother had to to ask me not to play. I would play this song on the 45 record & then I finally got on LP. Makes me think about how my mom let me play for hours repeating the record over & over. I miss Roberta Flack playing at Mr. Henry's when I went to Howard University. The 70's were so good. Miss great music!!!

  37. R.... S....

This is even better than Nina Simone's version! So beautiful. :'(

  38. 1.... ....

Roberta's version of this was the first I heard way back in the 70's, and while I love Nina Simone, Roberta's version--a slow meditation with hope and melancholy, hits all the right chords for me. The arrangement is spare, as are all the songs on this album, which was in such stark, welcome contrast to the fun, fab disco rage of the times. Love to you, Roberta and thanks for posting.

  39. C.... S....

Looking for something else and ran up on Do What You Gotta Do. Man I sang along with that album (all of Ms. Flacks music). Now that I am older the words seem to apply to me. I truly believe I was the wild sweet love. Wonder if he is around now. Ms. Flack, thanks for the memories. P.S. Rev. Lee still my joint.

    Claudette Stewar

Girl you said a mouth full....lol....Young folks don't know nothing about this...Like you, the words seem to apply to me also. Hope she had a great life. She was not the only one and I wish them well...Lordy, Lordy, Lordy.....Peace and Love.....

  40. L.... R....

This song once ushered me through a deeply painful, emotionally crippling and anguished period that sometimes happens when the one you Truly Loved breaks your tender, trusting heart.  Thinking back, I believe this song just might have singlehandedly SAVED my life.  For this and so many other reasons, I will always be grateful to Miss Roberta Flack.  Real Talk.

    L.... R....

This and Tradewinds are my 2 all time fave Roberta Flack songs. This is the song that sold me on Roberta . I love it to death! I'm glad it helped you.

  41. s.... o....

"Come on back and see me when you can!!!!"

  42. P.... L....

One of the many favorite songs by Roberta Flack that I love since early 1974!! "Now That's Good Mello Music"!

  43. J.... O....

    Simply Beautiful :)

  44. P.... A....

This song gives me chills... just love it.

  45. T.... L....

Amazing to compare performances of the past to the style that's been dominate for much of the last decade in which beautiful voices aren't allowed to thrive within the space of a song and its story, but are repeatedly and continually relegated to, at least once in every song, demonstrating volume and range. Yeah, we got it a long, long, long time ago. How about showing your ability to deliver the heartfelt power and breadth of your voice in the way you can hear in Flack's performance here?

  46. C.... J....

Ms. Flack, I've loved this song for sooooo long. Unfortunately, had the wrong title, but I have it now. I know it word for word. Thanks

  47. J.... H....

One of the greatest voices. Atlantic Records needs to reissue/remaster her albums.

  48. J.... L....

love this version, but  heard johnny rivers version first and am partial to it.  this is definitely more soulful but there is just something about rivers' voice.

  49. B.... B....

    mine too.

    K.... J....

Wow. Such a powerful song. Huh?

    K.... J....

Extremely powerful. My ten year old son heard it just now as it was playing and he had that same look of amazement as I did at the same age when I first heard it, Powerful indeed.

  52. A.... C....

    I love this version

  53. R.... T....

    Ron,
Happy New Year. How are you doing?

  54. K.... J....

Do What You Gotta Do is my favorite Roberta Flack song since I was a little girl.

    K.... J....

i can't even decide which is my favorite of her albums, let alone one song. she's just too amazing.

  55. E.... M....

The year my father went to Vietnam. My mother played this ever night until he returned home.

  56. V.... J....

    Missing him brought me here.

  57. S.... W....

Amazing  voices. Roberta Flack and Nina  Simone  singing this song...Love them both! I heard this song the first time in the early 70's. It is still just as powerful and realistic in the 21st century. "Do What You Gotta Do."

    S.... W....

I like the 4 Tops version a lot also.

  58. B.... K....

I have played this album (vinyl) a thousand times. What an incredibly beautiful selection sung by a fantastic singer

    B.... K....

    Bill Kelly Jimmy Webb

  59. I.... G....

For another treat listen to her sing Just Like A Woman, Until It's Time For You To Go, You Are Gone Away, and Suzanne. She also does a wonderful job on Jesse but it is so touching and sad that I cry. She has a way of being able to convey her deepest feelings to the listener.

    I.... G....

Deborah, I love those songs. I have been singing them for years and recently I saw a video of a 'young' lady singing 'Until It's Time To Go' at a jazz club here in NY and I couldn't help thinking that her mother or some older relative played the album a lot in the same house when she was growing up. I'm sure the other jazz vocalists wanted to know where she got it. lol

    I.... G....

    love ur choices

    I.... G....

Ife Gail Young I have and I love them all

  60. I.... G....

    Perfection.

  61. B.... S....

BEST ALBUM SHE MADE. I LOVE THIS ALBUM. I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM MANY YEARS AGO, THEN HAD TO BUY THE CD...STILL LISTENING TO IT. LOVE IT. THE SONGS TAKE ME TO A CERTAIN SPACE IN TIME.

  62. R.... A....

i was born in 1966, listened to this album with my mother until i joined the Marines in 84, and every time i came home we would sit and listen to this album. she passed in 2008 and I go back and listen to it often. My wife just asked me why I listen if it makes me cry everytime i hear these songs. I just look at her and say its not sad tears i cry they are happy tears, i was just diagnosed with cancer and i listen even more now. i am not sad at all. i remember my mother and the other people in my life and i cry because i am loved haved loved and will be loved for ever

    God bless you, Ron.

    R.... A....

    R A bless you

    R.... A....

Hello, Ron Archer! I am listening to the very talented Ms. Roberta Flack singing one of my favorite songs and found that it is one of your favorites, as well. I read your post and then had to read all of the replies. I pray that you are still in remission and doing well. I will remember you in my prayers. Continue to 'Do What You Gotta Do' :-) :-)

    R.... A....

This is one of her most beautiful albums. And I loved reading about how you used to listen with your mom, and listen with "happy tears" now that she's gone. Even though this was originally posted 4 years ago, I do hope you are doing well and still playing this album and shedding happy tears! All the best to you!

  63. D.... D....

Oh my goodness what a voice, when I first heard this song in the early 70's it bought tears to my eyes and forty something years later it has my teary-eyed again.

  64. M.... S....

ONE OF THE BEST VOICES OF ALL TIME . I LOVED THE LYRICS!!!!!!!!!!

  65. S.... M....

The best of her. I first heard this song way back in the 70s and when I listened to the lyrics, I knew I would be a fan forever.

Lyrics like this never go out of style and they never leave your soul. Thank you Roberta Flack for the voice and Jimmy Webb for the incredible lyrics and music.
