Fitzgerald, Ella - Speak Low Lyrics

Speak low when you speak love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak love
Our moment is swift
Like ships adrift
We're swept apart, too soon

Speak low
Darling, speak low
Love is a spark lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near
Tomorrow is here and always too soon

Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends
Everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Speak, when you speak love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak love
Our moment is swift
Like ships adrift
We're swept apart, too soon

Speak low
Darling, speak low
Love is a spark lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near
Tomorrow is here and always too soon

Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends
Everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

    What a wonderful melody

The first line is from Shakespeare. The music is by Kurt Weil who also wrote Mack the Knife. The lyrics are by the great humorous poet Ogden Nash. It's a beautiful song covered by many great artists. I particularly like Jo Staford's version, but even in her later years Ella is great.

This was recorded well into Ella's vocal decline in later life. She had developed an obvious vocal wobble, and her elegant phrasing had become abbreviated and choppy. She still brings out the magic of this song here, and I think perhaps it is because it's so stripped down that she is allowed to shine where she would perhaps have been less well fitted to the orchestral setting at this point in her career.

So impossibly expressive. Ella's singing just fills you all over.

Nice tune!

Nothing compared to Sarah Vaughn, Barbra Streisand, Diane Schuur or Nina Hoss, sorry,  Ella!

+Vicki Hodges you really felt it necessary to come to this video to say that?

Apples and oranges. All equally wonderful. If you understand Ella's body of work, you'll get why people are responding to your remark. It's all good, though.

i believe ella is up there in age at this time...in her time she was the queen!and she still is.i`m a sarah fanatic!!

This has got to be the best cover/version of this song, even though I love all the versions, simply because I love this song! Ella and Joe, such a magical/legendary pairing!

Sarah Vaughan's live recording from the London House is probably the best treatment this song has ever had. She was in prime voice and she really brought out all of the sensual, bedroom intimacy of the lyric. Ella here is unfortunately well past her prime. I wish she had recorded the song earlier with a small group, or perhaps even with Ellis Larkins...would have loved to have heard it.

    J.... S....

direfranchement That version is also fine wine! But my all time favorite from this one is by Dee Dee Bridgewater! To me she takes the cake!..
