Fitzgerald, Ella - Puttin' On The Ritz Lyrics

Have you seen the well-to-do
Up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air

High hats and narrow collars
White spats and lots of dollars
Spending every dime
For a wonderful time

Now, if you're blue
And you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where fashion sits
Puttin' on the Ritz
Different types who wear a daycoat
Pants with stripes and cutaway coat
Perfect fits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Dressed up like a million dollar trooper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper
Super-duper

Come, let's mix where Rockefellers
Walk with sticks or "umberellas"
In their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz

[instrumental break]

Tips his hat just like an English chappie
To a lady with a wealthy pappy
Very snappy

You'll declare it's simply topping
To be there and hear them swapping
Smart tidbits
Puttin' on the Ritz

Love it! Thanks for share it! #ClassicMonday #JazzVocals

Geneous Irwin Berlin, 1927 written. And movie of 1930 with Garry Richman and with ORIGINAL text and supershow!

  19. m.... ....

For those who don't know, "Puttin' on the Ritz" is the jazz age's much better equivalent of saying "big pimpin'"!

  20. m.... ....

If my only exposure to this song (and this recording of it) was because of that 80s' Taco nonsense I would be to ashamed to admit it.

  21. R.... _....

    ella= always a good choice!

  31. T.... A....

i thought I was going to dislike this version. how wrong I was.

  32. D.... D....

    Jazz oh yea

  33. P.... J....

So taco ain't the original singer?

    P.... J....

LOL definitely not, it's from a 1930s film of the same name, other singers are Fred Astaire (1946)

  34. A.... P....

    Fabulous

  35. A.... P....

wow the Queen . I'm in love!

  36. A.... L....

irony is that at this time she would not have been let in to the Ritz

    A.... L....

    Anders Liljevall
Actually blacks were allowed in, for the sole purpose of performing on stage as musicians/singers. Anything other than that, nah.

    A.... L....

    in what time? In 1958???

    A.... L....

and the song has nothing to do with the Ritz.

    A.... L....

Anders Liljevall ignorant comment. She would have been given exclusive billing on stage and commanded a QUEENLY booking fee as well as 60% of the box office. Her run would have sold out within minutes by the rich, famous and powerful with all of them genuflecting before her at the end of her performance and screaming for an encore. Anyway, "putin' on the Ritz" is the jazz age's much better equivalent of saying "big pimpin'".

    A.... L....

    @mrlopez2681 lol funny

  37. D.... ....

beautiful woman nice voice........sounds like a white lady

Gotta say, Taco did this noicely too.

  42. S.... ....

Play this on 1.25 Speed - it just sounds better to me :)

    S.... ....

U have got to be kidding me. Taco?!? Gag.....

    S.... ....

    OMG. You're right!!

    S.... ....

Sceliphron God the level of bad taste from people today goes to show why modern pop music is so bad. 1.25 speed. Honestly.....let's give it the Taco tempo. Gag all over again.

    S.... ....

    Or 0.75 - it’s just waaaaay sexier

    S.... ....

    Damn, you're right!

  43. W.... K....

    R.... P....

  48. M.... ....

    The Best...............

  49. O.... ....

For some reason, this version make so much more sense than the other one.

    O.... ....

OneWeirdDude the reason is because this is the genre of music for which Irving Berlin wrote it! :)

  50. t.... d....

Fred Astaire's domain. Version in "Blue Skies" memorable.

    t.... d....

tricky dick I love Fred Astaire do it

  51. S.... ....

Ugh I was born in the wrong era. Such a good version

    S.... ....

+SophieLouise You're so right! it hasnt stopped! I want to be a successful jazz singer. my whole act is revolved around the old jazz fashion, dresses, gloves, red lips... you name it. I'm 21 and I will continue to be a jazz singer. nothing wrong with loving history!

    S.... ....

+aaliyahlee91 I wish you luck. I also love jazz and think this is so much more enjoyable than Taco's version.

    S.... ....

A great performance of a good song, is timeless.

    S.... ....

    SophieLouise same

    S.... ....

The only reason you could hear this song whenever you want in such good quality is because you were born in this era.

  52. G.... A....

Vale a pena recordar, música e letra magníficas. Boa Noite!!!!!

    +aaliyahlee91 Thanks

  54. R.... M....

    Ma meilleur musique eternele

  55. C.... G....

Great song, but listening to this on headphones is not enjoyable. the bass is located all the way to the right and all the brass is on both with the solo on the right. That's just disorienting.. Whoever did this did a very poor job, sorry.

    C.... G....

Ah, if it's a recording of a live band that would make sense. That shows that the person automating this recording didn't do any panning (since they probably couldn't). Also, it's not very wise to assume things. On both our ends :-)

    C.... G....

    +Connor Giesbrecht
It is pretty common to record big bands with a single stereo mic from a distance, and a single mono mic on the lead vocal, hence the stereo image will match that of the room itself.

    C.... G....

    +Connor Giesbrecht Digital-trance-house-whatever-fruityloops-infected-kid ;)

    C.... G....

Connor Giesbrecht. So it's the engineer(s) you take issue with? This is early stereophonic for recording music.....with excellent seperation. Most early stereo recordings sound 100 times better and more realistic than today. BTW....this might be in an audience-free recording studio, but IT WAS recorded live.

  56. M.... A....

    THE EISHTEIN OF THE SINGERS
