I never knew this song had words...I only knew it as an instrumental, appropriately enough as the theme song for "Playboy After Dark", which I see by the comments here, came after this particular program.

Actually, it's from Playboy's Penthouse, the forerunner of Playboy After Dark and one of the first, if not THE first, TV show to feature integrated social gatherings. Some of Hefner's centerfold models can be seen in the background.
get your point, but would say its more the song than Ella, who more than anyone ever, could transcend that generational stuff (listen to her 60's recordings of tunes by Cream, The Beatles, etc. which are even later than this Beat Generation influenced number.) Its an OK fun tune, which is all its meant to be. If you like the Kerouac rap, check out Fran Landesmann's writing for "The Nervous Set" The show didn't run that long but yielded 3 standards and some quirky Beat lyric tunes like this one
This is Previn's song .. but if you think about it... that generation of hip was not Ella's so I think the words were new to her.. hence the way she pronounced them.

Beautiful voice. Ella looks great. Imagine being back there in 1959 when this was probably shot. Interesting song too. Kerouac's mentioned in it at a time when he still had books to write and now the movie of his classic On the Road is to be premiered in Cannes this month (May 2012). Ella singing "I've Got the World on a Sting" is on the film's soundtrack. Full circle.
Kerouac Fan I was on the scene in 1959. Saw my first live Ella concert 1959. Saw and heard her Caesar's with Sinatra & Basie, Santa Monica concert, numerous times after. Remember the Memorex commercials when she sang and broke the glass?
