Fitzgerald, Ella - I Didn't Know What Time It Was Lyrics

Once I was young --
Yesterday, perhaps --
Danced with Jim and Paul
And kissed some other chaps.

Once I was young,
But never was naive.
I thought I had a trick or two
Up my imaginary sleeve.

And now I know I was naive.

I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you.
Oh, what a lovely time it was,
How sublime it was too!

I didn't know what day it was
You held my hand.
Warm like the month of May it was,
And I'll say it was grand.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand to see your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I'm all your own.

I didn't know what year it was
Life was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was
shining out of your eyes.

I'm wise,
And I know what time it is now.

Grand to be alive, to be young,
To be mad, to be yours alone!
Grand to see your face, feel your touch,
Hear your voice say I'm all your own.

I didn't know what year it was
Life was no prize.
I wanted love and here it was
shining out of your eyes.

I'm wise,
and I know what time it is now.

So wonderful, I can hear it thousand times....and still can't find the words.

  2. f.... ....

I agree that this perfect but so is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVloLApXPq8.

  3. D.... C....

Ella = the who of whom there is no than whomer ... the pinnacle ... the end of the rainbow ... da bomb ...

  4. S.... V....

Ella sings this great Rodgers and Hart song besutifully.
But although I love Larry Hart's work generally, the verse here seems superfluous, unnecessary.

  5. C.... K....

Ahh, there's nothing better than hearing such a beautiful melody sung by such an incredible voice! Ella's perfect vibrato and pitch control were unsurpassed (perhaps unparalleled?), and her impeccable phrasing - I'm sure I won't ever find a better singing of this song- this one is the quintessential "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" for me.

  6. R.... B....

Beautiful song, by the lady who could sing them all! Love it!

    R.... B....

Well put. (To her great credit, Marilyn Monroe
    pushed to get Ella
    into nightclubs and hotel rooms
    during the era of
    extreme prejudice
    toward African
    American artists.
Johnny Mathis was forced to stay
    at the downtown
Dallas YMCA during an early gig
    in his career.)

I had read somewhere that Marilyn had a heart of gold. Never could understand people who treat other people different because of their, race, sexuality, looks, wealth, health or any other thing. God said to love one another, he didn't stipulate "except for"!

A song dating from antiquity when virtually all
songs had an introductory verse, this magnificent
    Richard Rodgers
    and Lorenz Hart
song (1939) easily qualifies as my
    favorite recording by Ella Fitzgerald.
This immortal songbird's voice had wings! What more perfect song could
ever exist to put one into a romantic mood
    and feed the fires of
    love!

    M.... M....

    simply put; yes!

    Happy Hundredth, Miss Ella.
As always, the ultimate interpretation of whatever song she sings:
In this case a song written for the 1940 film, "Too Many Girls," the film which features Eddie Bracken (with his real singing voice) giving a derisive delivery of it.
(It is also of some cultural note that this is the film which brought Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz together, resulting in "I Love Lucy" eleven years later.)

Such a beautiful song, such a beautiful voice. There's only one Ella! I adore this song. Thank you!

  18. W.... K....

    1 word: PERFECT!

  19. M.... ....

Bravo for a magnificent version of a magnificent song, including the verse portion. I wonder if that "Paul" she was dancing with might have been Paul Petersen. If so, "lucky woman." Nah... couldn't be. The song was written before he born. Anyway, thanks for this rendition on YouTube for everyone to enjoy.
