Fitzgerald, Ella - Black Coffee Lyrics

I'm feeling mighty lonesome
Haven't slept a wink
I walk the floor and watch the door
And in between I drink
Black Coffee
Love's a hand me down brew
I'll never know a Sunday
In this weekday room

I'm talking to the shadows
1 o'clock to 4
And Lord, how slow the moments go
When all I do is pour
Black Coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I'm hanging out on Monday
My Sunday dream's too dry

Now a man is born to go a lovin'
A woman's born to weep and fret
To stay at home and tend her oven
And drown her past regrets
In coffee and cigarettes

I'm moody all the morning
Mourning all the night
And in between it's nicotine
And not much hard to fight
Black Coffee
Feelin' low as the ground
It's driving me crazy just waiting for my baby
To maybe come around

My nerves have gone to pieces
My hair is turning gray
All I do is drink black coffee
Since my man's gone away

  8. M.... ....

She and Aretha Franklin are two of the best voices in music history.

  9. J.... W....

Ella Fitzgerald will always be my favorite vocalist. At times, her back-up bands were not aware of her abilities, and, as jazzmen are wont to do when bored, they go after the "chick singer". Ella leaves them all in the dust, anticipating every snare they set! Bass players and pianists come and go, but Ella stands taller than all of them. Thank you for making this music available to everyone.

  10. r.... ....

How could it get any better ?

  11. S.... B....

    Love it Rest in Ms.Ella

  12. B.... B....

I don't like this. The performance isn't gritty enough for the song.

  13. S.... N....

Came from the vaporwave playlist from Spotify.

  14. T.... M....

Who is the pianist? It contributes a lot to the overall mood.

    T.... M....

    Trevor Morris Mr Paul Smith

    T.... M....

    ++Scott Elder
Thanks, Scott. I didna know anything about him, but he seems to have been a sought-after pianist, and worked with Ella a lot.

If Ella was on the voice, could she win?
NO ONE sings like this woman in today's world.

    M.... H....

    ++Mark Hoffman
She certainly wouldn't have won on American Idol (when it was on the go) judging by some of the very talented contestants who were voted off over the years!

  21. D.... C....

    Yes mama

  22. T.... D....

bence sen mükkemmel şarkı söyledin (in my opinion you singed perfect)

  26. M.... T....

I'm here because of... no I'm sorry but it's true, I'me here because of Tricky's version of this song (or should I say Martina Topley-Bird). And noone in the comments mentioned that, so kind of had to do it.

    M.... T....

Me, too. I'm an Ella fan but by no means familiar with everything she's done. I do vaguely recall the song, sung by someone else.

    M.... T....

I came here as a fan of Ella but I'm also a fan of Tricky and am thankful that you mentioned it because it led me to listen that track.

I listened to that but for me the backing conflicted with the melody and lyrics and the mood you'd expect to be created. I had no criticism of the actual singing although Ella is at the top for me with almost every song I've heard her sing.

    M.... T....

spirals 73 Maybe Sinead O'Connor? Her version is quote beautiful.

    Or Sarah Vaughan

  27. T.... ....

drinking black coffee while listening to ella...

  28. Z.... L....

Actually, now that I've got hold of the original copyrighted, published sheet music there are further corrections to the other posted version, so here are the lyrics, just as both Peggy Lee and Ella performed them:

    BLACK COFFEE
    Words and Music by
Paul Francis Webster and Sonny Burke
    Copyright 1948

    I'm feelin' mighty lonesome,
    Haven't slept a wink,
I walk the floor and watch the door
And in between I drink black coffee,
    Love's a hand-me-down broom,
    I'll never know a Sunday,
    In this weekday room

    I'm talkin' to the shadows,
    One o'clock to four,
And Lord, how slow the moments go
When all I do is pour black coffee,
Since the blues caught my eye,
    I'm hangin' out on Monday
    My Sunday dreams to dry

Now a man is born to go a lovin',
A woman's born to weep and fret,
To stay at home and tend her oven,
    And drown her past regrets
    In coffee and cigarettes!

    I'm moonin' all the mornin',
    And mournin' all the night,
    And in between it's nicotine
And not much heart to fight black coffee,
    Feelin' low as the ground,
    It's drivin' me crazy,
    This waitin' for my baby,
    To maybe come around.

There are additional lyrics for a male singer to use, but they’re not as good, in my opinion.

    E.... ....

Excelsior thank you! I knew I heard "not much 'heart' to fight."

    E.... ....

Except that, instead of "broom" it should say "brew"

  34. E.... ....

One correction to lyrics: in the fourth line of the third verse, that's "And not much HEART to fight", not 'hard to fight'. Pretty spooky song...

  35. M.... C....

Magnifique.... !! Je me souviens l'avoir interprétée mais il y a déjà bien longtemps... !!
