I can *hear* and *feel* the emotion in this song. Makes me wanna cry each time I hear it, yet I wanna play it on repeat constantly. If you're wondering about why ashes and wine, its because once something becomes ashes, they can't go back. Same goes with wine. Once its fermented, there is no going back. I think its the wine part that is confusing some people. So she's saying, "is there a chance, or is there no going back?"

ur partly correct, if u leave wine alone it will get better with age, so the singer is saying  if we are ashes (its over for good)  if we are wine (we will be fine) thats what she means when she asks the question are we ashes or wine

I don't think it can mean ashes (it's over, no going back) or wine (be okay in the end/fine wine ages well) because she doesn't say "are we ashes OR wine" she says "are we ashes AND wine"... So the fermented/spoiled wine theory makes more sense than wine getting better with age..........
