FFS - Collaborations Don't Work Lyrics

[Chorus:]
Collaborations don't work
They don't work, they don't work
Collaborations don't work
They don't work, they don't work
Collaborations don't work
They don't work, they don't work
I'm gonna do it all by myself
I'm gonna do it all by myself
[x2]

Mozart didn’t need a little hack to chart
Warhol didn’t need to ask De Kooning about art
Frank Lloyd Wright always ate à la carte
Wish I had been that smart
Wish I had been that smart

[Chorus]

Collaborations don't work
You start off deferential
And strangely reverential
You both feel it's essential
Collaborations don't work
He's eyeing your new lover
Then one night you discover
Them underneath your covers

Collaborations don't work
Delaying your vacations
To sundrenched island nations
To seek some affirmations
Collaborations don't work
A colon or a comm
And then a drawn-out drama
Bring in the Dalai Lama

Where is this damn thing a-goin'?
Where is this going, someone tell me
Starlight, rub off on me
Star bright, rub off on me
[x2]

I don't need your patronizing
I don't need your agonizing
I don't need your navel gazing
I don't get your way of phrasing
I don't think you're really trying
What, pray tell, are you implying?

I ain't no collaborator
I am the partisan
Rebel in the rocks with dirty trousers, broken pistol in the hand
I ain't no collaborator
Hack my scalp if you think I am
I am a sadistic young usurper, a hand on your neck
Hand on your lover, oh, give the man a hand
I ain't no collaborator
I ain't no collaborator
I am the master, independent
If I ever need a father, it won't be you, old man

[Chorus x2]

  12. B.... H....

    Jesus Christ Superstar, anyone?

  13. A.... c....

    This song contradicts itself.

  14. L.... A....

    No ma.. que buenos son!

  15. G.... T....

...except for this one! What a great song! What a terrific album!! What a transcendent collaboration!!!

  16. J.... ....

Oh I assure you, *Collaboration Works*

  17. R.... ....

    4:32 Franz Ferdinand kicks in.

  18. S.... ....

I just love how, the song totally steers off course every minute (or less!) I wonder if they wrote it "exquisite corpse" style, or if that did have to actually collaborate closely to make it so disjointed?? You get a new sound at: :44, 1:07, 1:52, 3:08, 3:48, 4:32, 5:32, and 6:19. Fun times.

    S.... ....

Classical Sparks ways of making music. One extreme example is the song 'My baby's taking me home' where the title phrase is repeated, exept for a spoken passage. But rhythm and emphasis changes slightly. A little less repetative is 'Brenda's always in the way', humorous lyrics, should be LISTENED to, not as muzak.

  19. b.... a....

I should play this next time any teacher says to split into groups..

boredasheaven n I like your profile picture

  20. M.... C....

"What, pray tell, are you implying?"

  21. R.... H....

It's just mad and I love it

  22. R.... d....

With the no collaboration of Bertrand Russell

  23. D.... ....

    Oh the irony

    D.... ....

    @*****
Well, Sarcasm is really just another word for a more complex form of irony. Like 'hipster'.

    D.... ....

Just to give out my two cents on this discussion, the reason I prefer to use "irony" is because this song is written by a collaboration. So, I don't need to go deep on it. You guys can use all the synonyms from thesaurus whatever you want and doesn't matter how you use them as long as you stick to the context of the definition.

    D.... ....

    @tronerman
    eh. it's more nitpicking anyways.

    D.... ....

    That really needed clarification

    D.... ....

I don't hesitate to call it sarcasm, though it's a sort of "up y..s" to all people who said this collaboration was impossible, one way or the other.

  24. e.... ....

    So Collaborations Don't Work apparently...

And then Franz Ferdinand and Sparks make a whole album that completely disproves that theory.

(Yes I know it's out of context with the lyrics, but just humour me, okay?)

  25. C.... ....

    1ma theme song

  26. A.... ....

This is BY FAR the best song on this album. Please, please don't continue with this Franz Ferdinand! I have been a big fan since your first album and have liked so far all your work. But this,.. It feels as if my band got corrupted by something evil, something like justin bierber... ugh... I can't believe I'm typing this. Please come back, please find your roots. Give us more Jacqueline, Michael, Ulysees, No you Girls, Do you want to, etc. I'm really sorry, but this song is most Franz Ferdinand of the whole album, and it still is not Franz Ferdinand.

    A.... ....

+Amayii Excuse me??  That music sure as fuck doesn't sound like Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift.  If anything, the album seemed too intelligent/mature/ironic for an American label & audience to snap up.  I can only imagine how much they still wanted to fight against brands like Coldplay & Muse - along with the "girl power" movement.

    A.... ....

+Jean O'Boyle Yeah, I'm afraid I have to admit I might have been slightly intoxicated when I made my earlier comment. I do agree that it is very nice that they experiment and try something new, it is probably the only way to stay relevant and also sane when playing in a band for soo long. Still, I have liked their previous experiments much more than this time. So I do hope that they return to their roots at some point :)

    A.... ....

+Amayii I appreciate your reply.  Thank you,  I also apologize for overreacting, even though I'm still proud to care very much for Franz.

  27. J.... O....

They could've done a video for this like Alanis Morrissette's So Pure or the one where Kanye has ballerinas.  Thank goodness they let us use our imaginations instead ...

  28. A.... ....

OMG, I know what this reminds me of (many of you maybe disagree), Queen's bohemian rhapsody in the way of how unorthodox the song is. (What do you guys think?)

    A.... ....

(simple version) it's like a 2015 version of bohemian rhapsody

    A.... ....

actually you are right i mean it is not bohemian rhapsody but it has its escence ps sorry bad english

  29. F.... ....

    Collaborations don't twerk

    F.... ....

+Frygotic Maybe they should've dressed like babies instead?  That's Miley's latest trick.

  30. i.... ....

This is one of my favorite songs from the album.

  31. s.... v....

My new favorite song from ffs next to piss off and johny delusional

  32. s.... v....

    I love this song

  33. P.... ....

I have no idea what I'm listening to, but I cannot help but think of translyvania by mcfly

  34. E.... S....

    👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  35. J.... ....

A fine album and wickedly good live. Hopefully this working collaboration will continue.

  36. w.... f....

This is a "fusion" of 3 song

  37. G.... ....

    What a brilliant album

  38. S.... ....

I normally like both groups very much. And you know what, I think this collaboration didn't work :/

    S.... ....

+Sierox So what would you suggest?

    S.... ....

@Jean O'Boyle I don't know, but there is something wrong...

    S.... ....

+Sierox Plenty has to be wrong.  Franz seems to have so much going on that they won't tell the public.  I'm still unhappy about what might have been if they'd played even better with others in the entertainment world.  Alex will definitely never be a Mick Jagger - drugs or no - but he doesn't seem to care, even if Franz must be blacklisted so hard in the US & UK.

  39. F.... ....

This FFS album is much more S than FF.

FFS - Collaborations Don't Work (Official Audio)

Le concert approche! C'est pour bientôt! ^^

  41. P.... P....

    Really pleasant!!!

  42. E.... D....

the thing with sparks. they may get up one morning and say fuck this. and go of in a different tangent to enother progect. there always changing and experementing. to them. ff. is just an exsperemant.

  43. E.... D....

they have fucked this track right up. brill. melodic start. shit brige. and brill ending. i love sparks for there big melodic sound. as ff. just wish they keep it short and sweet. without all that crap in the middle. ff.and sparks are a collaboration. looking forwood for more.

  44. G.... ....

I haven´t finished to listening it for first time and i love it

  45. R.... W....

    I predict !

  46. A.... A....

Can't help coming back to this track.
Heard it for the First Time on France-Culture... French sense of curiosity.

  47. .... ....

Kind of a "Bohemian Rhapsody", in my opinion. It's really cool!

    .... ....

Ja, indeed it's in a form of a Rhapsody ... I called it in german "rhapsodisch"

    .... ....

My first thought was, this is similar to Wings "Band On The Run".

  48. A.... V....

Great song! Reminds me of 10CC in their glory days.

    A.... V....

In fact, it sounds pretty much like 10CC's 'One night in Paris' from their album 'The Original Soundtrack'.

  49. G.... ....

This song is brilliant , this album should definitely be a hit

  50. B.... H....

I've gone my entire lifetime with no knowledge of Sparks and I'm sad to know now. I loooove Franz Ferdinand, but I can't even listen to this mess.

  51. I.... S....

    This song is very yellow.

  52. R.... C....

My motto is : " Collaborations Don't Work (at all) " FFS

  53. K.... ....

the ending part sounds a bit ff. reminds me a bit of ychismb

  54. A.... D....

Absolutely brilliant! At first such variance of styles sounded daringly disjointed. Now I get it. A genius fiddling with the most awesome musicians of our time. Loved Queen and anything that surpasses their legacy glorifies the magic of music.

  55. G.... ....

Quite simply an amazing piece of music , just love it to bits

  56. w.... 2....

Instant flashes of woofer in tweeters   just instant flashes of everything fantastic .

    w.... 2....

@sony me Thanks.   That reminded me of Girl From Germany.  This song doesn't make it for me.  I'll go off and search for Girl From Germany.

  57. T.... ....

This FFS stuff is getting better and better, Easily the best of the songs released so far, though I doubt it'll crack the top 10, alas. - As a long time fan of both groups, getting really excited about the album. Definitely sounds like each is challenging the other to bring their A-game.

  58. k.... ....

This is so fantastic, I love songs that aren't afraid to take on a mind of their own.

  59. e.... ....

I need the lyrics of this.
    Please.

  60. D.... ....

I prefer Franz Ferdinand:)), but I think Ron and Russell Mael are good people:)))<3

  61. N.... ....

Alex Kapranos and Franz are absolutely brilliant masterminds. And this idea is wicked fresh and innovative. Interesting how older musicians are putting out more innovative stuff than most pop starts out there. Albeit, Christine and the Queens.

  62. u.... ....

This album ain't big enough for the both of us!

  63. R.... S....

Start of the song reminds me of U2's "in a little while"

  64. h.... ....

Hold on, 2:23 is that Bob singing? :O

    h.... ....

@Rocío Astudillo OMG yes, by far my fav part of the song. <3

    h.... ....

@dani0de0nick Mine too :) hahaha! I'm a McCarthy girl, but Bob is becoming my fave in this FFS era :)

    h.... ....

@dani0de0nick What? how do you recognize him?

    h.... ....

His voice is really soft and unique :) and he almost never sings, so it was easier to recognize him.

    h.... ....

    On 2:48 RON is😅😘

  65. J.... N....

It's stunning how the combination of both groups sounds so fresh and yet sounds exactly like songs from both groups separately.  There's no "Sparks sound" and "Franz sound," it's not even perfectly blended; it's like both universes exist simultaneously in the same space.  This is Schrodinger's ballad.

    J.... N....

@Jason Norman Yes, but it gives a fresh sound to FF, and it's SO good to hear
something approaching the old Sparks sound! Glad they making new music especially after all these years!!!

    J.... N....

    @dabull136 indeed

    J.... N....

This gave both bands a chance to go outside what they could do alone.

  66. r.... ....

Listening to this as the UK Election coverage happens is strange

    r.... ....

    RIP Lib Dems :-(

  67. p.... ....

    Fantastico !!!!

  68. P.... ....

This is great.  A most happy collaboration which shows both bands off well, working as one. Nice Satie-esque finish. I've a feeling this is going to be a great album...

  69. s.... ....

The part that starts at 4.36 really sounds like The Kinks. Especially when Alex sings "I ain't no collaborator".

  70. G.... ....

This is brilliant , I think this album is going to be so so good all 3 songs so far are amazing

  71. D.... D....

A fantastic blend of the finest ingredients, cheers chaps.

  72. S.... ....

    I'm laughing my ass off.

  73. k.... ....

A nice piece of cabaret-style art, good to perform on stage in a musical theatre, but unfortunately this won't work in the disco nor in a rock radio programme. Much too complexe in its musical settings for that. However, it could be a nice piece of musical art when they perform it live on stage

    k.... ....

@kadewi052 They will happily play Bohemian Rhapsody...why did radio have to give way to repetitive beats, and non-songs? This should be heard on all radio programmes, but oh no...it might cause people to think, drop tools at work and discover there is another life out there. Music like this should be heard everywhere, not compartmentalised in one particular setting. Genre is the enemy of music.

    k.... ....

@PrizewinnersPaws However it's also a fact that musical artists are compartimentalizing themselves. I can observe a growing discrepancy between artists' studio album songs and the songs they are currently performing live (including their hit singles). This is a typical studio album song, but it won't be a hit single. I believe a lot more in Piss Off and Johnny Delusional as hit singles played on popular radio programmes. We know the musically rich repertoire of Sparks, they have made several similar album songs in this theatrical cabaret-style like they are doing now with "Collaborations". But these haven't become popular hits, nor will this one. By the way, also groups like Sparks FFS need some popular radio hits (music that you can dance to, and sing with) as an introduction to their studio album, as a teaser to make people buy the album and listen to the musical artwork of all the records. Best greetings from Belgium.

    k.... ....

"Piss Off" might have been that single...but for the title it would have the lot. A great sing-along tune for all ages!

  74. M.... ....

    4:30 so cool

    M.... ....

+Musefication Best part of the song.

  75. e.... ....

    please come to chile :D

  76. L.... M....

    It's a philosophical paradox!

    L.... M....

    +Ghada Bell it's irony.

  77. E.... E....

    this song doesn't work

  78. k.... ....

    full lyrics anyone..?

  79. S.... F....

    My actual FFS'chart:
    1) Johnny Delusional
    2) Collaborations Don't Work
    3) Piss Off

  80. A.... O....

    .. Oh genius

  81. R.... P....

I have been playing the new songs at my restaurant in Thailand and the guests really enjoy the sounds! MORE, MORE, MORE!!

  82. A.... i....

    love it, no words

  83. M.... ....

Sounds like a Sparks album to me.
Who needs Franz Ferdinand I hate Alex Kapranos voice.

    M.... ....

I need Franz Ferdinand, but not in this collaboration. I hate Sparks

    M.... ....

+Jackie Jackson +MrStainedglass I guess you two cancel out. Well, I like it, and I guess I'm sort of the tiebreaker here?

  84. M.... V....

excellent collaboration, but it doesn't work

  85. K.... D....

I cannot stop listening to this. It's masterful.

  86. A.... W....

Personally I don't think that this song is as good as the other two... I will still love Franz Ferdinand until I die, but I just don't feel that hyped up at the moment...

  87. T.... R....

not ugly guys with beautiful girls but still pretty fuckin' awesome

  88. N.... ....

    すごく好き!アルバム楽しみ~!でもBBCのラジオでも言ってたけどFFSで画像検索するとびっくりするね!

  89. S.... S....

3:55 I like how Russell's voice comes from the right speaker and Alex's from the left

    S.... S....

@Ivan Malek I heard it too!

    S.... S....

great audio panning. Love the production these guys had.

    S.... S....

@Ivan Malek these guys are no twats. they no what there getting into.

    S.... S....

love Rod Stewart that's about it

  90. R.... R....

    Love this song!

  91. R.... L....

Absolutely epic! Best song on the lp so far, it is structured like Dick Around!

  92. R.... L....

You can't dance to every Sparks song!

    R.... L....

    Roserio Leyva DANCE GODDAMNIT

  93. J.... T....

Do I hear an homage to "Send Him Away" in there?

  94. R.... L....

If you think this isn't Sparks , then you truly do not know sparks

  95. L.... L....
