Ferry, Bryan - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues Lyrics

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez
And it's Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs
When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outa you.

Now if you see Saint Annie
Please tell her thanks a lot
I cannot move
My fingers are all in a knot
I don't have the strength
To get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor
Won't even tell me what I've got.

Sweet Melinda
The peasants call her the goddess of gloom
She speaks good English
And she takes you up into her room
And you're so kind
And careful not to go to her too soon
And she takes your voice
And leaves you howling at the moon.

I started out on burgundy
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me
When the game got rough
But the joke was on me
There was nobody to call my bluff
I'm going back to New York City
I think I have enough.

    Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues
    WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN

When you’re lost in the rain in Juarez
    And it’s Eastertime too
    And your gravity fails
And negativity don’t pull you through
    Don’t put on any airs
When you’re down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outta you

Now if you see Saint Annie
Please tell her thanks a lot
    I cannot move
My fingers are all in a knot
    I don’t have the strength
To get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor
Won’t even say what it is I’ve got

    Sweet Melinda
The peasants call her the goddess of gloom
    She speaks good English
And she invites you up into her room
    And you’re so kind
And careful not to go to her too soon
    And she takes your voice
And leaves you howling at the moon

    Up on Housing Project Hill
    It’s either fortune or fame
You must pick up one or the other
Though neither of them are to be what they claim
If you’re lookin’ to get silly
You better go back to from where you came
Because the cops don’t need you
And man they expect the same

    Now all the authorities
They just stand around and boast
    How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms
    Into leaving his post
    And picking up Angel who
Just arrived here from the coast
Who looked so fine at first
But left looking just like a ghost

    I started out on burgundy
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they’d stand behind me
    When the game got rough
But the joke was on me
There was nobody even there to call my bluff
I’m going back to New York City
I do believe I’ve had enough

  6. Phil Horne

Ferry is the king of Dylan covers, and, he’s got Oliver Thomson on guitar WOW

  7. Eduardo Masangcay

Linda ronstadt or neil young cover on this song are the best, fuck this!

  8. Леша Семенов

Брат я думал раньше , что ты итальянец...

  9. Paul Joseph

Better than Dylan is a compliment to Bob. He could write a song that anyone else could mould. Full of characters and stories and an attitude that even transcended the US political, rail, road and blues scene. He is an endless source of depth, meaning and musicality and a pit of contradictions. Give me a Shot of Love which is a bad ass genius album with an enormous depth of musicality. The more I play it the further in I go. No one else seems to agree.. Yet. His radio show was a revelation. The man had as many sources as the Mississippi

  11. ExtremelyOCD

I like it. I'm a big fan of the way the Grateful Dead did it, their own unique take on it. Bryan does the same. His own style to it. Almost a different song, which is awesome.

  12. wrongvisions

wow I've always been a Roxy Music fan, but I'm realizing I need buying all Ferry albums as well..

    “Gilligan's Island”
I was eating Mary Ann's coconut cream pie, which sounds dirty but
it isn't, when the lard-ass skipper fell through the bathroom floor of
the “Minnow” and smashed Lovey Howell to death. It was really sick
    & I could not forget it & since I didn't have a plastic knife, I cut her
up with a bamboo stick. Ginger tucked in first with her huge boobs
swinging, as I fought my cocoanut-skin rubber to push my thing in.

  34. Daniel Maxwell

"We're trapped like rats!" Larry observed and got promptly slapped
by Moe, who'd no regard for ratty states of grace, free or untrapped.

"we're trapped like rats" SLAP "speak for yourself"

  35. Mark Roberts

Typical Bryan Ferry.Way to many complementary words to say. VIVA ROXY MUSIC.glasgow fan.peace.😘👊✋.

  36. Hapax007

Probably the best cover I've seen of this classic Dylan song.

    MrALF423

Maybe Mick Hucknall's - One of us must know is also candidate ...

  37. John Suchenski

    John and Jen

  38. Mustange Sally

I'm sorry, I love Bob Dylan, have loved him since I was a kid, but he doesn't ever make me feel like getting up & dancing the way Bryan Ferry does. To me, Bryan's always been more versatile than Dylan, or maybe I'm trying to say he's more upbeat when needed for some songs. I'm not sure Words don't seem to be coming to me at the moment. Too busy enjoying the music.

    Chris. Vervloet

Well... Bryan is only performing... Bob wrote it !

  39. Sebastian Wendel

... genial wenn er die Mundharmonika spielt ...

  40. larry mcneely

    great bryan...good job

I prefer the cover over the original. Just discovered Bryan Ferry, he is good, and the band as well, my opinion, anyway.

  43. Katarzyna Kowalska

    Brilliant!

  44. Tony Becker

Brilliant version, I have only heard one better and it is a Romford based band called " Silver Haze "

  45. Locker Numb

The difference between a great artist and a run of the mill is the great one is unpredictable and does not do the obvious. This version by Bryan Ferry is out of the world

    Mark Roberts

    Exactly, well said.

  46. Jason Kleinhanss

    way better harp

  47. Barbara Mawson

  53. Music of Bob Dylan

Hi there, obviously a Dylan fan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI1sW5-cvMs get inside his Music Box at http://thebobdylanproject.com/Song/id/338/Just-Like-Tom-Thumb's-Blues and listen to some great music

  54. Kevin Loughran

Love this cover!  Better than Dylan's slower, lower (Dylan's is in G and this is in E) original.  Contrary to the poster who questioned it below, Ferry is actually playing the harp but he's not very accomplished.

    ROBERT KELLY

    Christoph Luibl
It just goes to show you what one can accomplish with....practice...practice...

  55. bill gee

    Stuart Wilkins

There aren't many songs where i prefer the cover to the original, but for me, this is one of them - agreed.

  57. Pattym902

There is always someone to dislike a very likable video.  2 dislikes???

  66. Shane McFee

oh why does this not have more views? It is one of the best versions, of that great song by Mr Bob Dylan....started out on burgandy,,and soon hit the harder stuff......

    Jay Peckay

"Mr" Bob .........hehe - next will be "Sir " Bob............thick or what?

  67. Michael Kubica

    Best Cover

    Jeff Rogers

I can't decide. I'm prejudiced towards the Grateful Dead/Garcia/Weir/Phil on Dylan tunes. I also love seeing Dylan play live but I'm not wealthy enough to keep up with him on tour. Last time I know that I saw this played by the GD was in 1994, head FULL of really good LSD, just a few rows in and center. Sound system wasn't doing great that 3 night run but that night even without stage monitors it sounded great. This is great too. Need a time machine and near immortality. Stones in early 70s would've been great too. Too bad they shit on Sam Cutler but it all worked out.

  68. eamon54

He does this really well and should do more beaty stuff like this. This is great and thanks so much for posting.

  69. frtac

HE'S GOOD REALLY GOOD. A NEW TWIST ON A CLASSIC BY A CLASSIC. CLASS.
