Fatboy Slim - Every Drop Of Rain Lyrics

[Estrella:]
I was just a young girl
A girl with curly hair
Your mother called me family
I became quite close to her

I handled all the money
Washed the clothes and made the meals
In the night she'd wake up screaming
So you children slept with me

[Estrella & Imelda:]
They called us garage people
Where we lived there, you and me
When you're poor — it's like you're naked
And every drop of rain you feel

[Estrella:]
When it rained we slept on boxes
There was water all around

[Imelda:]
But the people in the big house
Never bothered to find out
No clothes, no bed, no jewelry
Sometimes I had no shoes

[Estrella:]
A typhoon came — the house collapsed
And the neighbors passed us food

[Estrella & Imelda:]
They called us garage people
Where we lived there, you and me
When you're poor — it's like you're naked
And every drop of rain you feel

Every little tiny drop of rain you feel — every drop of rain
Every little tiny drop of rain you feel — every drop of rain

[Estrella:]
I handled our finances
I myself was never paid

[Imelda:]
My teachers paid a visit
I felt, felt so ashamed

But I had kept my dignity
Some things cannot be killed

I smiled and kept my head up
A Romualdez I was still

[Estrella & Imelda:]
Every little tiny drop of rain you feel — every drop of rain
Every little tiny drop of rain you feel — every drop of rain

@phira360 short answer: a song from a conceptual biographical album later adapted into a musical.

long answer: david byrne made a collaborative album with fatboy slim, a biographic take on imelda marcos, along with estrella cumpas, a woman who grew up with her and raised her - the one from whose perspective this was written. imelda was the first lady to ferdinand marcos, a president of the philippines who imposed martial law, his reign known for its corruption, extravagance, and brutality. imelda played no small part in this, a powerful figurein the government. the assassination of ninoy aquino, a senator and leader of the opposition, led to the people power revolution, a nonviolent three-day revolution that led to the the departure of the marcos family, and the restoration of democracy. david byrne then adapted the album based off of this into an off-broadway musical. if you're easily fooled, you'd think it's nothing but fun meant to worship imelda - but with so many imelda loyalists furiously leaving and calling the musical nothing but lies, it's really a particularly clever criticism of her.
