Fall Out Boy - "It's Not A Side Effect Of The Cocaine, I Am Thinking It Must Be Love" Lyrics

Why can you read me like no one else?
I hide behind these words
But I'm coming out
I wish I kept them behind my tongue
I hide behind these words
But I'm coming out

Put your hand between
An aching head and an aching world
We'll make them so jealous
We'll make them hate us
An aching head and an aching world
We'll make them so jealous
We'll make them so jealous

All the ways you make my stomach turn
And all the long drives
With my friends blur
And I wish I kept them inside my mind
I hide behind these words

And think of all the places
Where you've been lost
And then found...out
In between my sheets
In between the rights and the wrongs

Put your hand between
An aching head and an aching world
We'll make them so jealous
We'll make them hate us
Aching head and an aching world
Think of all the places
Where you've been lost and found...out

September of 8th grade. Lafayette Colorado. My best friend and I would wander around aimlessly, far less worries than we have now. Damn I really miss those days.

  4. E.... G....

I like David Bowie and Fall Out Boy so this is cool.

  5. B.... B....

Stolen and tampered lyrics from David Bowie. 10/10

  7. A.... H....

I love you, Kiley. You're the love of my life.

  8. S.... ....

Dammit, I fucking hate FOB, and now I have another reason to. Using Bowie's words as clickbait. I was looking up Station to Station. Sorry if you like FOB, but I absolutely despise them. Whiny lyrics, annoying ass voices and boring uninspired instrumentals.

  9. T.... L....

"now i'm coming out" lol that feel when ur closeted

They should break this one out at one of their concerts nowadays. Picture it, they finish with “alone together” or another one of their newer pop ballads. Then the lights go out. Everybody thinks it’s over right? Wrong. In the style of the replacements “here comes a regular, Patrick walks out with an acoustic guitar to center stage. One single spotlight turns back one and illuminates down onto him as the rest of the band heads backstage. Everybody in the crowd begins to anticipate “grand theft autumn” or maybe even “ive got a dark alley...” but instead, Patrick starts to talk about the early days. Living out of the van, how they wrecked the van prior to a show, and all the craziness that ensued in the next 10 years or so. Then says “a lot of you may not know this one, but after tonight you will have some idea of what it was like for us back then. It was us against the world and it was tangible.” And then begins to strum the chords to this song and every girl in the crowd wets their pants as Pat belts out the first few lines... I first heard Fall Out Boy at age 9 on 88.9 WSTB “THE Alternation”. A radio station based in Streetsboro, Ohio. I was captivated by the dueling guitar and heavy sound of the drums. A sound I hadn’t come to recognize in any other band I had heard yet by that time other than Nirvana. But what got me the most was Patrick’s deep yet yearning voice. Like that of a boy longing to tell a girl “hey, I’m in love with you, but I’m just a friend in your eyes. So it will never work and I know that.” That kind of painful ping to the heart. I am no “musician” by any means. But I always tried to replicate his voice. It was this very band that made me want to pick up a guitar that same year and I’m now 22. I love all shades and shapes and styles of music, but something about early to mid 2000’s emojis where my heart has always felt at home. I’m not sure where or who I would be today if at 9 years old I hadn’t heard this and many other of their songs during my formative years. And I thank all of them, Pat, Pete, Joe and Andy, for inspiring me to play music for myself and explore myself as a person. This song, this album, this band in general changed my life as I know it.

I thought this was gonna be Station To Station. This was horrible.

    q.... ....

quickmike It may be horrible to some but it’s beautiful to others. I love this song, and I love Fall Out Boy so much. You just need to try listening to some other songs by them.

  16. J.... S....

Please start making music like this again

  17. c.... g....

The return of the thin white duke, throwing darts in lovers' eyes

    c.... g....

    here are we
    one magical moment

  18. K.... ....

    This is plagiarism

    K.... ....

Using a lyric from Bowie's Station to Station as a song title isn't plagiarism, or they wouldn't have been able to get away with using it in the first place. They've used references for song titles loads of times, and gotten away with it with varying degrees of success: 'A Little Less Sixteen Candles A Little More Touch Me' was originally named 'A Little Less Molly Ringwald, A Little More Samantha Fox'; they have songs successfully named for actresses, as in 'She's My Winona' (as in Winona Ryder) and 'Uma Thurman'; 'America's Suitehearts' refers to the film 'America's Sweethearts' and the song 'Our Lawyer Made Us Change The Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued' was originally called 'My Name Is David Ruffin And These Are The Temptations'. If pop culture references were plagiarism, then this band wouldn't have got far named after a minor character from The Simpsons!

  19. C.... ....

    Why am i here.

  20. l.... j....

    this song is honestly gold

  21. f.... i....

This probably brings back memories for people but instead im thinking of the one video of pete where he hits a phone against a wall and says "no honey, it's just the cocaine talking"

    f.... i....

Fox In Space OH MY GOD YES

  22. R.... M....

why name it after a line in a david bowie song?

    R.... M....

They've named songs and lyrically referred to lots of things in the past. The real question is, 'why didn't they reference Bowie sooner?'

  23. S.... D....

    is this a Bowie reference?

  24. K.... D....

    RIP Fall Out Boy :(

  25. S.... ....

GHEY! using Bowie as click bait

    S.... ....

    yep man
our world is full of crime

    S.... ....

Same, I Fell from the clickbait, but I am Glad that I found more songs from"My heart will always be the b-side of my heart"

  26. L.... S....

Wtf it's from Bowie's station to station, except Bowie is 1000x better

    L.... S....

    exactly

    L.... S....

Bowie was great for his era, but there's literally no point in comparing all music to him or acting like nothing 'surpasses' Bowie just because it's Bowie. Music evolves and changes. His era of music doesn't work in ours and you can't compare the two practically. Just let it be, damn.

    L.... S....

Lorefin Stardust Fuck off, that’s not the point of the song

  27. l.... W....

i is so confused is fob gay??

    l.... W....

lovelei williams I mean probably but then again no homo

    l.... W....

that's a question for mikey way... if you know what I mean

  28. J.... D....

why is this existing oh my, I am so sorry for all bowie fans

    J.... D....

I was searching for the meaninigs of that sentence and I fall on this cancer

    J.... D....

star M. guys this is a gr8 song

    J.... D....

Mikael Paddack-Trudel This isn’t cancer. David Bowie is fantastic and Patrick Stump looks up to him, that’s probably why they named the song this. Fall Out Boy sounds fantastic, especially if you get into other albums.

  29. J.... D....

WTF THIS IS FROM DAVOD BOWIE THEY STOLE HIS LYRICS WTF IDIOTS

    J.... D....

Artists pay homage to other artists all the time, and Fall Out Boy make pop culture references all the time. Their song 'Hum Hallelujah' was literally a reworked cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', and that was perfectly legal for them to do.
They wouldn't have been able to release it under this title if it wasn't legal. You're acting like Bowie is completely untouchable; he was still an artist and a flawed human both, and if Fall Out Boy wanted to pay homage like this, there's nothing wrong with it.

    J.... D....

star M. I'm sure Bowie was fine with them using his lyric as a song title. It's not like this song sounds anything like station to station

    J.... D....

ok I'm assuming you're just wanting people to blow up @ you but they definitely got some kind of permission from people affiliated with Bowie (they make pop culture references constantly like everyone but they know when to steer clear, such as with headfirst slide into Cooperstown on a bad bet where they avoided using Pete Rose's name because of copyright, or with the more obvious' "our lawyers made us change the name of this song so we wouldn't get sued". if they did it then they for sure knew it would be legally ok. also this is from 2004/2005 anyway so:)

  33. T.... ....

Millenials don't realize the title of this song is a stolen David Bowie lyric. ✋😂

    T.... ....

    right!?

    T.... ....

    shut the fuck up

    T.... ....

u millenials are so dumb😂 because you were born on a specific time😂

    T.... ....

I'm not even a millennial and I understood

    T.... ....

Chris Rankin - Lol, serious? Nowadays we certainly have better technology, but the recording quality is definitely not better now than it was back then? Much of what's recorded now is overly processed and way too clean.

  41. P.... A....

Im actually crying :'( This brings back so many memories of the old Fall Out Boy, when they were the label-hopping band that not many people knew about, and would produce tear-enducing music with meaning. I will always love FOB, even when theyre too old to produce music anymore, I will still have a special place in my heart for them, but I feel like, ever since they returned from their hiatus, their music had started to lose some of its rocky,emo-ey edge and started to become something leaning towards "pop" and more mainstream sound, and ugh, I dont know. They just dont feel the same anymore, i guess. I miss them <3 Of course I still love their music, and its evolved beautifully, but please Fall Out Boy, don't become mainstream <3

    P.... A....

    And Panic! isn't?

    P.... A....

    I agree

    P.... A....

Ok I completely get your point but I mean pre-hiatus FOB changed with every album? they're literally a band that alters it style with every album anyway (and obviously the music isn't the same, even fob themselves admit that but to expect the exact same as 2007 is pointless. also they're not going to make really questionable decisions like they did then since they all except for Andy have kids)

    P.... A....

a concept: not being afraid to enjoy a band that happens to be popular just because you want to be a Super Cool Indie Kid and only listen to bands no one's ever heard of
seriously, why does it make a difference whether they're popular or not?? they still make good music so who cares?

  42. j.... ....

by far my favorite song by them ❤️💜

    j.... ....

it is a david bowie song

    j.... ....

    +star M. it's a David Bowie lyric :) the title is :)) not the actual song :)))

  43. P.... T....

It feels like it was just like yesterday, They realised this album even though they realised it 12 years ago.. I'm crying..I feel so old rn

  47. B.... B....

It's so sad to think fall out boy will never make music with this much meaning again.

    B.... B....

They stole the lyrics from david bowie, sorry

    B.... B....

+Mike Wheeler you're right it hasn't even been ten years since the hiatus yet & they all except for Andy have young kids that they want to focus on more so people should really give them a chance :/

    B.... B....

    Basic Bird Q

    B.... B....

Basic Bird ah yes it sure is sad that pete wentz isn't suicidal anymore :(

    B.... B....

Except these guys used Bowie's words to bolster their credibility. They came from the title track of his 1976 album Station To Station, in which he officially unveiled his new persona, The Thin White Duke. The original was an experimental trip with guitar, mixed in with elements of funk and lyrics that are deluded by his new duke persona, fueled by cocaine, isolation and his refusal to accept that the drugs are speaking for him and altering his personality.

This is just a emo-fueled whine fest that most Fall Out Boy songs generally are, only this time they defiled Bowie's meaningful lyrics.

  48. h.... ....

    thought that was beebo

    h.... ....

omg i came across this again and thought it was Brendon Urie again xD

  49. T.... ....

One of the Good Ol Fall out Boy songs

    A.... D....

This album is underrated as fuck

  53. A.... J....

My favorite fall out boy song!

  54. M.... ....

"It's not the side effects of the cocaine, I'm thinking that it must be love"- David Bowie, Station to Station

    M.... ....

finally someone who realizes these are the words of Bowie lol

    M.... ....

I just searched in yt and this showed up. Don't know what is this though

    M.... ....

YES I THINK THE SAME THING

  55. M.... A....

Fallout Boy is the last band that should be making Bowie references. the people in this comment section don't even know the title is a line from a much better song.

    M.... A....

Who cares if FOB fans don't know Bowie's music? Bowie was great for his time, sure, but he isn't untouchable, and putting a capital on culture with this attitude is a waste of your time. Let people enjoy what they want for chrissakes.

    M.... A....

Jesus Christ, nobody fucking cares. This isn’t the point of the song! It was most likely named this because Patrick is a huge David Bowie fan.

    M.... A....

I really don't give a fuck about Bowie, and I'm not really interested for his music. Go listen to someone you like, idiot. Let people listen and make song titles to whatever they want, there's really no need to know him to like the FOB song.

    M.... A....

My Autobiography A Fanfic hurr durr i am from the old generation that still understood music... all you young inferior fall out boy fans will never understand the greatness and complexity of david bowie... i shove three copies of space oddity up my ass every night while doing cocaine and crying, get on my level bitches, it takes a very high iq to even begin to comprehend the depth of bowie's music but i wouldn't expect you young imbeciles to understand

  56. D.... l....

I can't stop listening to this song

  57. J.... H....

No matter how new/old the songs may be, Fall Out Boy will always know the exact route to my heart <3

  58. N.... K....

It's amazing how much Patrick sounds like Brendon Urie in this song

    N.... K....

    Wow never thought that

    N.... K....

I hate it when people say that but I somewhat agree for these acoustic songs. In my opinion love will tear us apart is the one where they sound the most similar

    N.... K....

RyanRossStoleMy ManiaflavoredCheezWhiz nice username and profile pic

    N.... K....

Phanic! All Time Pierced Pilots Romance Boy thanks. Its for my youtube channel, i wabt crank that frank to watch ny crack vids

  59. S.... K....

This entire EP just makes my heart burst with emotions. Especially this song. Its such a good us-against-the-world-song. I love the lyrics and I love the way Patrick's voice sounds in acoustic. Its honest and so real that if he were to be actually sitting in the same room as I and singing this, I wouldn't even flinch. I just.. *clutches heart and walks away*

I can also see why people don't like their new stuff. I do, like, I genuinely think they still put out good music. But I get the rationale of wanting them to go back to this kind of raw, less-produced sound. This makes me nostalgic for something I am not even sure I have experienced yet.

    S.... K....

So true! I love them sooo much!

    S.... K....

    Try their LIVE versions too

    S.... K....

Shubhi Kaushik still think all their new stuff is good?

    S.... K....

nick norrie i’m of the opinion that american beauty/american psycho was the worst album, but mania’s good. as with any band, they’ve got their good albums and their bad ones.

  60. c.... p....

Fucking memories let it all go thru ... Wohoooo!

  61. C.... C....

  67. I.... D....

    best song title ever

  68. B.... H....

    Nostalgiaa, ohh the feels!!

  70. g.... d....

    why, fbr

    g.... d....

like that person said   fall out boy basically made FBR what they are

    g.... d....

@wetheacademyjr Actually they were FBR only on this EP and Take This To Your Grave, since From Under The Cork Tree they are Island/Decaydance (Decaydance is Pete Wentz's record label)

    g.... d....

@Rodrigo Reinoso isn't decaydance under fueled by ramen

    g.... d....

yes, it is. It's something a little weird, but for example P!ATD publish like FBR/Decaydance. I think it's because some kind of partnership with Pete more than an actual relationship with FBR and then Warner

    g.... d....

@Rodrigo Reinoso yeah i was sure everyone under "fueled by raman" was also under decaydance!  by defult and that is why they all kinda have a similar sound

  71. A.... S....

    really loooooooooong name

    A.... S....

@Soso Saby "I Slept With Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got was this Stupid Song Written About Me" :D

    A.... S....

@EpiKerCovers That's something Taylor Swift would write, not FOB.

    A.... S....

@Soso Saby lol But still, it is a Fall Out Boy song.

    A.... S....

@EpiKerCovers I have to admit that at least FOB is honest with it's titles.

    A.... S....

@Soso Saby "Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things to do Today"?

"I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea that Says You Should Shut Your Mouth (Summer Song)"?

    Yep, I guess! haha
