Faithfull, Marianne - In The Night Time Lyrics

Standing by the Everyman, digging the rigging on my sail
Rain to the sound of harpsichords, to the spell of fairy tale
The heath was hung in magic mist, enchanted dripping glades
I'll taste a taste until my mind drifts from this scene and fades
In the night time

Crystals sparkles in the grass, I polish them with thought
On my lash there in my eye a star of light is caught
Fortunes told in grains of sand, here I am is all I know
Candy stuck in children's hair, everywhere I go
In the night time

Crystals sparkles in the grass, I polish them with thought
On my lash there in my eye a star of light is caught
Fortunes told in grains of sand, here I am is all I know
Candy stuck in children's hair, everywhere I go
In the night time...

Really need Donovan to do this song justice: no offense lovely Marianne!

Did not know this Donovan's one. But as many of his initial ballads it is a good one. And usual, through her it acquires a plus. Everywhere she adds her sensitivity, the subject earns something new. She is different. Understand what Oldham saw at first sight. A delicate and peculiar nite bird, she is. 😳💜❤️🐦👌

I don't know the history of the song, but it's probably my favourite Donovan song. The words are very suggestive of a psychedelic experience, and the heath must surely be Hampstead Heath in London. Presumably he went out there one night and took some mushrooms. Outside and at night always was my favourite place to do that kind of thing, 20 years ago.

+rhd75 Yes, it's Hampstead. The Everyman is an arts cinema [still there] :)

He announced it was Mescaline many years ago, and yes Hampstead Heath.... Try the tea room, the best in London, or so it was when I left.

Yes; there is an additional stanza in the version which Donovan recorded some years later. As to what the song is "about": You're right, it's "hippy trippy," and it's "about" the hypnotic and dreamy quality of visually experiencing what a fog-shrouded night offers to the senses, and the introspective ramblings that take off from there. Both versions are beautiful and priceless, IMHO.

marcelous video, magnificenttly moving interpretation,,,magic In The Nighttime

This song is always mistitled...the correct title to this song is HAMPSTEAD INCIDENT....that is how Donovan labeled it...marianne for some reason had it mstitled on her LP and it has stayed misttiled since 1965.

@crazedwitch2 I wish to correct you on a couple of understandable mistakes. I notice you live in the UK. Due to numerous legal hassles Donovan was going through at the time, his "Mellow Yellow" album (which contains both this, and "Young Girl Blues") was not released in England, but was released here in the U.S. (and the rest of the world) in January of 1967. In other words, his versions of both songs came out a few months before Marianne's.
