Fairport Convention - The Hexhamshire Lass Lyrics

Away with the buff and the blue and away with the cap and feather
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

Her father loves her well, her mother loves her dearer
I love them better than them both but, man, I can't get near her
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

If only I could be lying there aside her
While I must bide here, my arms'll be denied her
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

Her skin is like the silk and her hair is like the silver
Her breasts are deep and cool, they'll warm when I get near her
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

Ah, this love of mine, oh, this love, I am weary
Sleep I can't get none for thinking of my dearie
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

Away with the gilded shield and away with the cap and feather
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

Away with the buff and the blue and away with the cap and feather
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire
Off with the [?] and over the moss and the mire
I want to see my lass who lives in Hexhamshire

There's no such place as Hexhamshire. Check mate, hippies!

Hexhamshire was a county until 1572 when it was incorporated into Northumberland, land south of the town is still known as Hexhamshire, marked on O/S maps.

@TheFunkadelicFan says the guy on YouTube bickering about this. Even if it never existed, if Swarb sang about it it's real enough for me and legions of Fairport fans.

I always consider this song to be the quintessential Fairport performance from the Swarb'.

Chris Leslie of Fairport explains that the Sabe Syke (sp?) Is a moor in England that separates this fellow from his lover.

Can anybody tell me the chorus lyrics, I mean fill in the blank here: "Off with the ... and over the moss and the mire".
And at the very end "Away with the ... shield and away with the cap and the feather".
Thanks very much, I can't understand those parts!

+Andrea Calzoni Try to locate the record - should have it somewhere w. lyrics sheet- I believe the missing words are off with the sadie serken - meaning old clothing (serken stems from nordic serk meaning dress or the leather worn by eg. a blacksmith)

Probably military terms (?) as back to his love!
