Fairport Convention - Reynardine Lyrics

One evening as I rambled
Among the leaves so green
I overheard a young woman
Converse with Reynardine

Her hair was black, her eyes
Were blue, her lips as red as wine
And he smiled to gaze upon her
Did that sly, bold Reynardine

She said, "Kind sir, be civil
My company forsake
For in my own opinion
I fear you are some rake"

"Oh no," he said, "no rake am I
Brought up in Venus' train
But I'm seeking for concealment
All along the lonesome plain"

"Your beauty so enticed me
I could not pass it by
So it's with my gun I'll guard you
All on the mountain side"

"And if by chance you should look
For me, perhaps you'll not me find
For I'll be in my castle
Inquire for Reynardine"

Sun and dark she followed him
His teeth did brightly shine
And he led her up a-the mountains
Did that sly, bold Reynardine

i was born in 73. i listened to mostly hard/classic rock, never folk
but lately ive listening to more folk music.
The other music is so played out that this sounds fresh to me.

  17. J.... F....

    Simply beautiful

  18. A.... T....

What does the lyric "brought up in Venus' train" mean?

    A.... T....

It means he has been raised by women

    A.... T....

@Victoria O'Hara : No. That sits not welle with it.

    A.... T....

@Argon Wheatbelly It's what it means

    A.... T....

@Makin it in L.A. : No, he was brought up around the women of the goddess of love; yet, he does protest being characterized as a rake, as would be expected of those in train. A fox would never declare himself to be a rake. Though his teeth did brightly shine. Be wary.

    A.... T....

@Argon Wheatbelly actually to be specific, brought up around women "of the goddess of love", yes, that is what I mean't. The quote comes from some ancient poem, can't remember which right now. Amazing piece.

  19. F.... W....

There's an old cliche about being willing to hear someone sing the phone book. Sandy Denny is the only person I could honestly say actually I would. The greatest vocal talent I have ever heard.

    F.... W....

Three such voices for me. Sandy Denny, Natalie Merchant and Rhiannon Giddens. Those ladies could even make the Tory Party manifesto worth at least one listen! There is, on YouTube, a recording of Sandy Denny singing for a late 1960s butter commercial! When I first came across it, I actually ended up listening to it several times, as her voice is so stunningly beautiful, as she hums a tune very similar to her own 'Fotheringay' song.

  20. P.... H....

In the wake of Trump's election this song makes me think of the USA. She had her suspicions, but went along with him anyway. Sly old Reynardine!

    P.... H....

    Oh my. You nailed it.

  21. M.... i....

    awesome

  22. J.... W....

"your beauty so enticed me, i could not pass it by" good chat-up line
'if you change your mind and want me after all, you may not find me' typical sales technique

    J.... W....

Josephine Winter “I’ll be in my castle” - that’s an even better chat-up line!

  23. C.... V....

Does she sound a little like Christine McVie?

    C.... V....

Chris McVie might have sounded a bit like Sandy Denny....

    C.... V....

    hell no never.

    C.... V....

Not nasually sounding enough to be C Mc

    C.... V....

Not to my ears. Christine McVie is not in the same league as Sandy Denny, but then few people are.

  24. A.... F....

Sounds great through your system!! :) Please upload the whole album. Pretty please ! :)

I found this going through my head when I got up this morning, and just had to listen again. It still sends shivers down my spine after hundreds of listens over the years. The combination of Sandy's voice and the amazing musical setting is incredible. Well worth getting out the headphones for!

    m.... ....

well worth it .Its not plastic rubbish !

  27. T.... C....

Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Steeleye Spann are English folk at it's finest..I love it so...

    T.... C....

+Terry Costello and Mellow Candle (they are Irish though)

  28. c.... ....

    Me encantó. Excelente
    Saludinhos

  29. K.... B....

Portcullis, me too!!  Headphones while the TV is on.  We bought this soon after we were married in 1973 and listened to it incessantly.  The old English stories are captivating and Sandy's voice is sublime.

  30. P.... ....

Although I have had the 'Liege And Lief' album for about 15 years, it is only now as I listen to this song on headphones (while the family watch a film on television; I can't have the C.D. player on, so I am lost in my own world listening to Sandy and Fairport on YouTube!) that I have come to appreciate just what a truly great version of 'Reynardine' this is. The vocal performance on this song is just outstanding.

  31. J.... B....

A stunning song from a remarkable album.

  32. T.... P....

IF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Maddy
     Prior, lark in the morning.

  33. h.... ....

A very odd arrangement with no beat. Just singing and strumming. No complaints though.

  34. l.... ....

fantastic to hear this again after all these years. thanks for posting.

  35. C.... W....

one off best albums ever made.

  42. i.... d....

Her voice is amazing, many thanks to the person who posted this. Beautiful.

  43. T.... S....

Can't help going back to Country Joe's "Colors for Susan" (1968) on this one. Sure do love to hear Sandy sing in long meter. This is a masterpiece. It's even better now than it was in '69. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I caught a few of her shows before it was too late. Still missing her.

    T.... S....

Just went and listened to Colors For Susan, and yes I see where you're coming from, great track. If I'd just heard it blind I'd never have guessed it was CJ & The Fish - thanks for the pointer!

  44. c.... ....

I can't think of any other song quite like this. It seems to be about to stop completely or gather pace. Love it, very unusual.

  45. T.... T....

One of the few voices that can make you fall in love with voices.

  46. h.... ....

"at dark she followed him.. his teeth did brightly shine..", never fails, at that point the chills always go up my back..

    h.... ....

yea, like a pirate smiling in the dark

  47. J.... T....

@ledzeprebecca Are you nuts??? Both awesome but totally different.

  48. D.... P....

Ah Sandy Denny, the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin track. Awesome!

Liege & Lief is 10/110. Such an album.

  49. a.... l....

    wroooooooooooom

  50. T.... B....

I've just discovered them--they were a name out there that begged, and I knew of Sandy and Richard. But what magic! Amazing!

  51. E.... ....

This is beautiful music. Thankyou for posting it.

  52. Y.... ....

    :)
    Thank you!

  53. t.... ....

    Amen, AnnihilatingAngel.

I was looking for a description of sweetly alluring Sandy Denny's voice combined with Fairport Convention. You said it best: "Enchanted music." Great, great album.

  54. N.... F....

Most of my favorite albums have to grow on me over time. Such was not the case with Liege & Lief: Instant rapture. This is enchanted music that transports the listener away from this grim & shabby "modern" world.

    N.... F....

I wouldn´t get too carried away with that there was very rotten stuff back then, Dying very young and painfully was common ..
