Fairport Convention - Now Be Thankful Lyrics

When the stone is grown too cold to kneel
In crystal waters I will be bound
Cold as stone, weary to the sounds upon the wheel

Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know

When the fire is grown too fierce to breathe
In burning irons I will be bound
Fierce as fire weary to the sounds upon the wheel

Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know

When the stone is grown too cold to kneel
In crystal waters I'll be bound
Cold as stone, weary to the sounds upon the wheel

Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know

I love Swarb''s voice. He sounds so natural. So many singers - Martin Carthy, for example - sound like that they have "created" their voices i.e. they has been manufactured.

The B-side "Sir B. McKenzie's Daughter's Lament For The 77th Mounted Lancers Retreat From The Straits Of Loch Knombe, In The Year Of Our Lord 1727, On The Occasion Of The Announcement Of Her Marriage To The Laird Of Kinleakie" Now that's a funny contrast to the dire mediaeval lyrics in this song. I really love the tune tho 😍

There is something very special in this music, it's more than a feeling, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's there, you know.

This song captures beauty that is elusive and indefinable. It saddened me when I first heard it and still makes me sad almost 40 years later. It's so beautiful but I really wish I never heard it.

    Richard Alpert

It's like something we all want and never seem to be able to reach. An utopia of humanity living in peace and harmomy.

very basic, very simple, even a live recording out in the open way back when.....that takes some doing to end up with such a perfect song, and let's not forget the main singer is also playing a key instrument as well.
Swarbrick you were something very special RIP.

I've heard this song interpreted as an allegory for Christian martyrdom. Cf. "sounds upon the wheel" = cries of martyrs broken on torture instruments and "red rose" = Christ's blood during crucifixion.

    Michael Wilson

Informative. And much better than Daniel Green's comment!

I came to enjoy Fairport due to Pegg's involvement in Jethro Tull. I never knew they did anything quite this beautiful. Sadly, I'd only heard some of the post Swarbrick output (which is nice too). The lyrics here might be interpreted as a bit gloomy though, don't you think? Still, I'm going to play this clip for my family when they visit for [the US'] Thanksgiving holiday coming up soon. Thanks for posting.
