Fairport Convention - John Lee Lyrics
John Lee, your headache's growing, the cold wind's blowing
But the sea's without a ripple
John Lee, your forehead's damp, your muscles cramp
And the sea can't use a cripple
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee's been made a freeman, his heart's a seaman
But his flesh won't make a sailor
Working in a big hotel, waiting for the bell
That's ringing for his labour
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
John Lee, your chances are good, you better touch wood
We think things must get better
John Lee, you've a friend so true, she wants to help you
Miss Keyes has sent a letter
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
"Dear John, come and work at The Glen, just write me when
And I'll send someone to meet you"
John's gone to where he started from, he's not worked long, just beginning to belong
"It hasn't been a very good day, the missus wants to halve my pay
Close the door and douse the light, it's quiet at night when he's tucked in tight
Sometimes I feel, when they're all in bed, it's almost like the whole world's dead
So I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee Lord my soul to keep"
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee
John Lee, you're turning around your fate again
Oh, John Lee

Fairport Convention John Lee Comments
Larvely reel, old boy. "Ave it on a comp.
Thanks for putting this up - I listened to the album so many times - must have been around 1974 - still remember every note
This album was casually dismissed at the time of its release, but it's terribly underrated. It clearly foreshadowed "Bonny Bunch" and "Tipplers' Tales" at the end of the decade.
The song John Lee is also on the Album History of Airport Convention.
One of the few 'concept albums' that doesn't wear out its welcome - telling the story of John Lee, the man who couldn't be hanged.
Excellent tune

I remember seeing FC at DeMontfort Hall in Leicester - cant remember what year it was, but guessing early 70s. Brilliant.

Yes mate - Taste the holy water - summon up the guard - dyings very easy - waitings very hard!!! - Total legends - I am 38 and love Fairport and Swarb to death!!!
Is this the same album that has lyrics, " Taste the Holy Water"?
I purchased this LP right after it was released.I had been a big fan of Fairport ever since I heard the song "Sloth" back in the early 70's.
I bought this album at Spartan's department store, when it was going out of business, circa 1970.. I got it a bargain price. Fairport Convention was an underrated group, and this particular album is one of the greatest largely ignored masterpieces ever made!
