Fairport Convention - Jack O'Diamonds Lyrics

Jack O'Diamonds, on the move
Jack O'Diamonds, one-eyed knave
On the move, hits the street
Bumps his head, on the ground
Well, he's a scout, you're born to lose
Shouldn't stay
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to play
Jack O'Diamonds, yeah Jack O'Diamonds
This one-eyed prince, wears a single love[?]
Oh sure, he's not that lovely
Jack O'Diamonds broke my hand
Left me here to stand
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to land
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
Jack O'Diamonds is a high card
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
But it ain't hard enough
Jack O'Diamonds can open for riches
Jack O'Diamonds but then it switches
Colour by picture but it's only a ten
Jack O'Diamonds, yeah Jack O'Diamonds
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to play
Jack O'Diamonds, yeah Jack O'Diamonds
This one-eyed prince, wears a single love[?]
Oh sure, he's not that lovely
Jack O'Diamonds broke my hand
Left me here to stand
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card to play
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
Jack O'Diamonds is a high card
Jack O'Diamonds is a hard card
But it ain't hard enough
Jack O'Diamonds can open for riches
Jack O'Diamonds but then it switches
Colour by picture but it's only a ten
Jack O'Diamonds

Fairport Convention Jack O'Diamonds Comments
  1. x.... y....

One of their best songs (Yes, I know they didn't write it!). This was probably the best song in their live act. It never failed to bring the house down!

This is musicianship... let's go back.
    👣

  3. r.... ....

Lonnie Donegan had a hit with this one. I believe Blind Lemon Jeffereson recorded it first. For my money John Lee Hooker recorded the best version in the 40s. this is pretty wild though

  4. c.... ....

    Great track.

  5. T.... B....

Ben Carruthers was in the John Cassavetes film "Shadows" (1959)

  6. G.... E....

    '60s Brit cool!

  7. f.... ....

My mistake, Ben Carruthers got the lyrics from the Dylan poem, not Fairport.

  8. f.... ....

Actually it was a traditional folk song from long before Dylan's time. Fairport Convention got a few of the lyrics from a poem on the back of Another Side of Bob Dylan. The music was by Ben Carruthers who released it as a single in England in 1965. So it was more inspired by Dylan than actually written by him

I don't have the album anymore, but if you wiki their 1st album it says it's by these two guys.

  10. T.... O....

This was written by Bob Dylan?
