Fairport Convention - I'll Keep It With Mine Lyrics

You may search at any cost
But how long can you search for what's not lost?
Everybody will help you
Some people are very kind
But if I can save you any time

Come on, give it to me
I'll keep it with mine

I can't help it, if you might think I'm odd
If I say I'm loving you, not for what you are but for what you're not
Everybody will help you
Discover what you set out to find
But if I can save you any time

Come on, give it to me
I'll keep it with mine

The train leaves at half past ten
But I'll be back tomorrow at the same time again
The conductor, he's weary
He's still stuck on the line
But if I can save you any time

Come on, give it to me
I'll keep it with mine

Fairport Convention I'll Keep It With Mine Comments
  1. s.... h....

    Beautiful.

  2. L.... W....

If you've made it this far then you are a member of the True Lodge.🦁 Anyone for a late night swim?

    L.... W....

    I'm in.

  3. k.... l....

Sandy took this song and make it her own. Of all the myriad versions sung by different singers, I can say Sandy made Dylan real proud. Dylan`s ugly duckling is ugly No More.

  4. K.... ....

I bloody love this so much.

  5. d.... f....

Where truth and beauty are wed in holy matrimony...

  6. J.... K....

It may seem odd fir me to say this to some people, but I really like the Marianne Faithfull version better. Seems like the world weary tone of her voice fits the lyrics better.

  7. J.... A....

    Masterpiece.

  8. T.... E....

If the aliens come and make me give them one good reason why they shouldn't destroy the whole human race, I think I'll play them this song.

    T.... E....

What a lovely sentiment, my friend! I'm listening to this version for the first time. For decades I've only known it as a song from Nico's album, Chelsea Girl, which is otherwise somber and rather chilling. I've always considered this song the almost singular ray of light from her album. It truly speaks to the hopeful and altruistic side of the human spirit, doesn't it? If you've never heard Nico's version, I invite you to check it out. It's a bit more uptempo, which makes it even more joyful and heartwarming, in my opinion.

    T.... E....

How do you know human music would get a positive reaction from an alien race?

  9. e.... f....

She's got me in tears by the second note and then Richard Thompson comes in.

  10. n.... n....

Yes it's a good version, and Denny sings it well. But I can't help thinking it's overorchestrated, in comparison say to Nico's (with the Jackson Browne guitar and the Larry Fallon strings) or Dylan's version at the piano. For me, the crux of the song is the third verse, "the train leaves" etc. (Yes, I know this is a bit arbitrary): Nico nails it. I normally like Denny, Fairports etc but this time the overdubs etc sound too much for the quiet reflection of the song. Same with Collins' version. And with "She Moved" on the same album. Good, but Van Morrison and the Chieftains get the essential creepiness, inc of course the ending note[s]. Just saying.

  11. C.... P....

Oh Hadama why did you leave so soon?

  12. M.... M....

    Beautiful... but what's it about?

  13. K.... K....

Thanks ArchMC and posting.........Love this tune........

  14. m.... f....

    definitiva!!!

  15. A.... U....

    Sublime

  16. 2.... ....

Must be one of the best Dylan covers ever. Sandy Denny at her finest, Richard Thompson speaking in guitar tongues, an absolute classic.

    2.... ....

That's such a great description of Richard's playing.

  17. H.... M....

Altho a Dylan fan since 1965 (and I regularly perform some of his stuff to this day) I had never heard this track by anyone until today. It is good. I had never heard of Nico so I listened to her version and is a '5' to the '10' of this recording.

  18. G.... J....

A great version of a great song!

  19. A.... G....

This my friend is another masterpiece

  20. K.... K....

    Posting and Thanks

  21. K.... J....

YES I agree .. the end of a beautiful culture

  22. R.... L....

Richard Thompson's lead at the end of this ineffable song is killer. Top five leads of all time for sure

  23. E.... M....

Witness the end of a beautiful culture.

    E.... M....

It lives on amongst those who seek it out in music like this.

  24. T.... J....

I'm a french fan of Sandy since a long time. Her voice was a glow of diamond at raw state. JP TEALE

  25. k.... l....

Dave Swabrick-her fellow musician once remarked, " how do you rate someone who is between Edith Piaf and Jupiter". Now I know why. This song sends you drifting into an animated suspension with nothing in your mind, except to Listen, Listen; another one of her all time greats written by D.Swabrick.

  26. R.... C....

I’ll never live without listening to Fairport Convention❤️This is home to me💗

    R.... C....

I totally agree. Sandy forever and ever.

  27. T.... L....

You may search at any cost, but how long can you search for what is not lost? Dylan and Denny were in the same Mold, one a singer, one a poet.

  28. B.... B....

My dogs favorite band is Canned Meat! Ha "Goin' up the country"!

  29. B.... B....

Whoops Byrds not Birds...cept in my cartoons!

  30. B.... B....

Absolutely Love Fairport Convention from the first time I heard them & haven't stopped listening to them since also love Buffalo Springfield which has one of the Birds in it right? Graham Nash!

    B.... B....

Graham Nash was not in the Byrds (Byrds, not Birds). He was in the Hollies. David Crosby was in the Byrds. Neil Young and Stephen Stills were in Buffalo Springfield. Together, they became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

  31. m.... ....

    Very Delicious Mix.

  32. J.... V....

Sandy freakin' nailed it...... head and shoulders above the rest.....

    J.... V....

Shirley Collins remarked, "when she is at her best, she is the best".

    J.... V....

Yes indeed. Didn't hurt having Richard Thompson play some sweet guitar either.

  33. J.... v....

I don't think that Bob Dylan ever imagined that he would be "outcovered" by this great performance. Goosebumbs every time I hear this one.

    J.... v....

BD wrote the song intending it to be sung by Judy Collins, and from earliest days wrote many of his songs to be performed by others, like Joan Baez, etc. I don't think it has ever been the case that he feels impinged upon by other artists' often *more* well known (or better selling as singles) covers of his songs, like All Along the Watchtower, Quinn the Eskimo, Make You Feel My Love, and dozens of others. All these artists bring their unique talents and voice to the songs, Fairport Convention being no exception.

  34. S.... M....

i've only head the song performed by Nico and Bob Dylan, it's refreshing to hear it sung by someone who used their voice to sing with instead of their nostrils - sorry, I'm just annoyed with Dylan for urinating all over Frank Sinatra's grave

    S.... M....

Yes, the arrogance! And I'm a huge Dylan fan.

  35. b.... ....

Marking the 39th anniversary of Sandy Denny's death. One of her best.

  36. M.... S....

Oh Sandy.... Why did you have to leave us so soon?

  37. J.... ....

This song does things to me that are hard to describe. Just takes me away to a far better place.

  38. T.... H....

The cool thing about Fairport is that the Dylan covers they did hadn't been released as recorded by Dylan, merely as the bootlegged demo tapes that were part of "The Basement Tapes," and similar compilations of previously-unreleased songs that have come out in the intervening years.

  39. E.... S....

    Phuuu, that's awesome!

  40. Z.... ....

Nobody does Dylan like Dylan, except Sandy... She somehow "feels" it.

    Z.... ....

Richie Havens knows what's up, too.........

    Z.... ....

@Ped Xing And Dylan himself said he was outdone by Jimi Hendrix on All Along the Watchtower.

  41. S.... V....

A lot of people would disagree that Sandy did better on this cover than Judy, of course I'm bias because-( even though Sandy has been gone nearly 40 yrs.),- she is still my favorite female vocalist, despite a lot of her own songs were sad-( she didn't seem like a very happy person),- somehow the sorrow and agony gave her material-( even covers)- depth..

    S.... V....

+Sandor Vitez Right, Sandoz. I agree on the superb voice and expressivity of Sandy. And on sadness: sometimes happiness is profound, but sadness can't ever be superficial. And Sandy was maybe a profound person

    S.... V....

    She was the greatest ever.

    S.... V....

I love Judy Collins but even she cannot hold a candle to Sandy. It's crazy how sublime a singer Sandy Denny was.

    S.... V....

for m the best version is by nico

    S.... V....

Many people tried to help her including Linda Thompson........

  42. C.... C....

The tracks of my youth. Fairport at their best with Sandy's gorgeous vocals and Richard's beautiful guitar.

  43. C.... C....

...Fairport Convention & the wonderful voice of Sandy Denny nail this Dylan track. Denny's voice is utter quality - sadly taken from us long before her time!

  44. D.... ....

Una delle migliori cover di questo classico di Dylan. I Fairport Convention ne fecero una versione elegiaca e piena di forza, che mi mette di buon umore ogni volta che la risento... fantastico il testo di Dylan.
    .....
I can't help it if you might think I'm odd if I say
I'm loving you nor for what you are but what you're not
Everybody will help you discover what you set out to find
But if I can save you any time
Come on, give it to me ,I'll keep it with mine
    ....

    D.... ....

Google Translate from Italian. I've made some corrections (e.g., they translated "risento" as "I resent").

One of the best covers of this Dylan classic. Fairport Convention made it an elegiac and forceful version, which puts me in a good mood whenever I hear it again ... Dylan's text is fantastic.

  45. I.... B....

Thanks for a great mix-- but where is "It Suits Me Well" ?

  46. M.... ....

Nico´s version is also rly beautiful

  47. C.... S....

    I just love it

  48. b.... ....

This is so beautiful. Her rendition of the song "Fotheringay" is also sublimely lovely.

  49. c.... ....

Along with the Byrds, Fairport Convention are the best interpreters of Dylan songs

    c.... ....

except for Dylan, that is :)

    c.... ....

+ciofpx I guess I am not the only person who realizes this. Percy's Song is another stunner by FC; Byrds It's All Over Now Baby Blue a hidden gem (both versions).

    c.... ....

  50. c.... ....

Love this.....Rolling Stone was always a pile of psuedo intellectual shite anyway

    c.... ....

@captainsoul1953 Only their music coverage is pseudo-intellectual shite. They have a news department, as well, and the news section eschews pseudo-intellectual shite in favor of outright lies.

  51. s.... ....

I think Jimi Hendrix made "ALL Along the Watchtower" a better song and I think Sandy Denny and Fairport made this a better song.

    s.... ....

    Agreed.

    s.... ....

RIP Sandy Denney. Your voice was out of this world.

  52. t.... ....

He is fully aware that Judy Collins for whom he wrote the song for had already delivered the definitive version.

  53. t.... ....

Have you even heard the Judy Collins (the original release) version?
Rolling Stone once opined tnat the Fairport Convention's entire existence was based on this obscure Collin's 45..
Judy's version is clearly superior to any objective listener.

    t.... ....

No. I love Judy Collins, and she definitely deserves credit for establishing the phrasing that's used here and in subsequent covers, but there's no such thing as an objective listener. I think the arrangement on that record sounds like The Archies, i.e. like a group of session musicians who are playing a chart for the first time. Judy has the definitive version of a bunch of songs but here I much prefer Sandy, and the harmonies as well, it's more engaging. Basically a large range of as-objective-as-possible listeners could prefer this or Sandy's or Nico's versions, they're all pretty great.

    t.... ....

Late reply. There is no such thing as an objective listener. And fuck Rolling Stone.

  54. t.... ....

This version is VERY influenced by the JUDY COLLINS version but more corny, like the Seekers covering BAEZ or PP&M.

    t.... ....

Late reply. There are some subjective listeners who think BAEZ and PP&M are cornier than The Seekers.

    t.... ....

You have it the other way around. The Judy Collins version is like the corny version of this one. And for a much better understated version with Judy Collins' phrasing there's Susanna Hoffs one for the Rainy Day album.

  55. t.... ....

He is THE most influential male singer of the rock era, period.

  56. m.... j....

Undoubtedly, but interim , whilst we decide: perhaps U tube and the vox populi can save us time , by revealing what happened to the definitive version of "Satisfied mind " , recorded in a subwayor underpass ,wotever you illiterate yanks call it.

  57. T.... ....

Dylan never recorded a final version. The two known versions were both demos. All the other takes during the Blonde on Blonde sessions, were either false starts or interrupted. We'll never know what a Bob Dylan version would have sounded like.

    T.... ....

    I'm in love....Sandy.....

  58. c.... ....

    Sublime Sandy....what a legacy.

  59. M.... W....

What a fantastic band! i was very lucky to see them open for Jethro Tull on the Benefit ? tour. I saw them again opening for Tull on the Crest of a Knave tour 15-16 years later!

  60. e.... s....

imagining and what the truth of it was, are two different things. IMAGINE DINOSAURS NEVER WENT EXTINCT! bob dylans' first album was not many of his own songs... dylan cut his teeth singing and performing as a young man who had charisma and a voice that needed to be heard. perhaps in 1962, you didnt like him. perhaps in 1964 you didnt feel him. but by 1970 if you didnt realize the width of his brilliance, you were either not alive or refused to feel the pulse of that generation.

  61. J.... R....

If you were in reach I'd bitch slap you and then do it right

  62. S.... A....

Fairport C will never be the same without Sandy

  63. M.... N....

It's between this and Who Knows Where The Time Goes for the best Fairport song ever in my view - I'm currently thinking this one wins it

    M.... N....

Percy's Song, The Deserter, Reynardine, She Moves Through The Fair, Quiet Joys of Brotherhood, Farewell Farewell, there are so many stunning Sandy Fairport songs. And can't forget Tam Lin!

  64. T.... ....

I am in absolute love with this song at the moment. I've listened to it every day for the past week. This may be my favourite cover of any Dylan song. A great band and Sandy Denny's voice gets me every time. Just amazing.

  65. k.... ....

Thanks for writing this Bob. My favourite Sandy Denny performance of all time...can't stop listening to it.

  66. a.... ....

'Insignificant' only because he did it so modestly. But thanks for saying 'seemed' rather than 'was'.

  67. a.... ....

It was not a rant. He wasn't angry about anything. His was a lovestruck plea and a soulful offering at the same time.

  68. l.... ....

Fairport Convention were the top folk English band of the end of the sixties and the dawn of the seventies.

  69. J.... R....

Haha, damn man! Take a joke! I didn't attack you personally! Why not ask me why i have that opinion instead, and we can talk about it like humans instead of saying things like that? (even though it was a joke)

Internet toughness is destroying humanity, apparently. We're losing the ability to talk to one another in a civil manner and refusing to be kind to our fellow man, especially if we don't know them. Read the lyrics to this song.

  70. J.... R....

JEEZ! Everybody just coooool out! I was joking! It's like I said something about your mother! I actually like Nico, and her version is fine (although I personally like this one better, just my preference!). I appreciate the passion you have for an overrated girl who was having sexual relations with Warhol (and everyone else), but telling me to kill myself is a little much though, jerk.

  71. w.... ....

    shitbag

    w.... ....

I see you're talking to yourself again.

  72. R.... C....

    K! I! L! L! *Y O U R S E L F* N! O! W!

    R.... C....

You very much wouldn't like that, but if you insist.

  73. l.... ....

This and wer does the time go...her GREATEST!!!!!!!!

  74. M.... ....

This song, no matter the version, has always given me the chills. This version, except for Dylan's original, is tops.

  75. J.... R....

This version is far far superior to any other version.

    Nico is a slut.

    lol. That is all.

    J.... R....

Opinions are like assholes something something

  76. S.... K....

Of course. That`s why he showed such vicious inhumanity in his work, eh? go stick your head up your arse, man, it`ll be more use to you there and the rest of us won`t be troubled.

  77. S.... W....

the thompson guitar and band harmonies on this track are awesome songs not bad either.

  78. p.... ....

I agree, this version has so much going for it, the sympathy and understanding in the vocals and music that express the song better than mere renditions elsewhere

  79. d.... d....

    @chaffyn Amen.

  80. J.... H....

I disagree with the comment that Nico's version is better than this one. I am a fan of both Nico & The Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny. Nico's version is excellent, but Sandy's version is totally awesome. The Bob Dylan original from the 'Biograph' compilation is outstanding as well.

  81. h.... ....

this is pretty bad. nico's version is far better.

  82. W.... S....

I'm going to have to disagree with many of you and say Bob Dylan's version is just easily the best

  83. W.... S....

@rmbnxs the bob dylan version isn't your favorite!

  84. b.... ....

Sandy's version is tops.No one comes close.

  85. m.... ....

Its worth repeating. This is the best version of this tune

  86. b.... ....

    @burtinriley

I bought stuff at the Record Hunter in the 70's and worked in the building next door in 1995..

  87. J.... H....

    @JoelGallob I totally agree!

  88. J.... H....

    @beefoneeto Indeed! I agree!

  89. f.... ....

the intro to this song is beautiful

  90. U.... ....

    best version EVER!

  91. L.... J....

Yes how long, can a man search for what’s not lost???? I DO wonder...

  92. T.... ....

Yes beautiful song, great movie ...

  93. T.... ....

    @gcw25 Souring or Soaring?

  94. T.... ....

Incredibly beautiful version. It's like a brand new life of the song... So powerfull...

  95. J.... G....

Few things in life are achingly beautiful. This is one.

  96. b.... ....

This version has been and will always be a triumph.

  97. l.... ....

One of my fav Fairport songs, such wonderful lyrics....meaningful....lovely

  98. s.... ....

Love Bob Dylan and almost all of his stuff, but this puts a Dylan song into a whole new dimension.

  99. f.... ....

Having seen 'The Art of Negative Thinking' last week, a great film where this song plays as the credits roll, I was once again reminded how fortunate I am that I know this band. Thank you.

  100. J.... H....

One of my favorite Fairport Convention songs with the late great Sandy Denny. A classic song from a classic album: What we did on our holidays!
