Fairport Convention - Come All Ye Lyrics

Come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

Those that dance will start to dance
And those who don't will sway
In time to this our merry tune
That we play for you today

So come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

Our fiddler, he just loves to play
And that's why he plays so good
And now he plays a violin
Made out of solid wood

So come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

Possessor of the magic touch
But no magician, he
Will play for you some magic notes
Instead as you will see

So come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

The sound of beating on the drums
From behind you hear
And to the rhythm of guitar
We hope you'll lend an ear

So come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

Well, the man who plays the bass does make
Those low notes that you hear
And the high notes come from you and me
For we will sing so clear

So come all ye rolling minstrels
And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the air
And move the rolling sky

Fairport Convention Come All Ye Comments

I still have the album Liege and Lief that I went out and bought when it was released so I guess I’m pretty old! I have loved all those players and the genre of British Folk Rock that they created but most of all Sandy Denny. She left us way too soon but what a body of work she left of her own compositions and performing them on piano and guitar. Imagine being 18 and writing “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”! I feel sorry for young people today who listen to rubbish.

  2. T.... W....

This is truly the most rousing, spine-tingling music I've ever heard in my life! To say Sandy Denny's voice is awe-inspiring doesn't come close to doing it justice. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.

  3. C.... W....

    Amazing thank you!

  4. L.... P....

"TO ROUSE THE SPIRIT OF THE EARTH AND MOVE THE ROLLING SKY..."

  5. D.... ....

I always loved the way Sandy bridges the chorus with "and" a half beat before the rest of the vocals

  6. O.... L....

Miss you Sandy. Hope you are up in heaven.

it always reminds me of the concert at the festival hall London on September 24th 1969, where they had regrouped after the crash that saw two fatalities, unfortunately , they started off with this, also on the bill were john and Beverly martyn, and, nick drake.

  8. e.... b....

  12. 6.... ....

Let's kick off a seminal album with a great great song! Imagine hearing this blasting from cars in the UK in 2019! The ENERGY!!!

  13. t.... ....

Brilliant opening song from a brilliant album by a brilliant band. Just listen to the sound of each musician as they build the power and momentum while Sandy's glorious voice sails above it all, like beautiful bird. This was recorded live in the studio without click tracks, overdubs or any of the other crapola that musicians need today. Brilliant.

  14. S.... P....

This song. This song. Speaks to my heart, strikes more deeply there than it did forty years ago. C'mon. Try.

  15. H.... R....

    The birth of folk rock.

And those who don't will stay
In time to [unverified] our merry tune
That we play for you today
So, come all ye rolling minstrels
    And together we will try
To rouse the spirit of the earth

  24. C.... W....

Wow what a great great great great song.f c what talent.so superb.

  25. G.... F....

I heard this song for the very first time on a Sunday on a Los Angeles radio rock station driving back home from a scorpions concert in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. I turned up the volume. And was quite pleased by this song. Too bad about Sandy, she left us too soon.

  26. K.... K....

    Posting and Thanks....

  27. J.... S....

A great album, but I thought full house was better.

  28. c.... h....

im sorry i was just to young to have been around at the time to have seen sandy live , what a voice ! we still love you hun xxx !

    c.... h....

I saw her a long time at Nottingham University...the most superb voice ever💕

  29. P.... R....

An ode to joy and an ode to companionship. Both Sandy's beautifully improvised lines and the band's unchiseled vocals project a sense of one-off spontaneity.

  30. M.... M....

this is epoch changing music .

  31. M.... W....

I love this reworking of Traditional British folk. It seems to me the British have such a great legacy to pull and create from.

  32. M.... R....

Never tire of this album seen them perform the whole album at croperdy without Sandy.rip

  33. R.... D....

Only song co written by Sandy and Ashley, Thanks so much for putting this on You Tube, Caroline !!

Craftsmanship. Looking for live, but thanks for uploading. Denny is perfect. Heard on Radio 4 last word he'd died. Comes to us all, but if his family reads then though death is inevitable, the joy that people can bring to the life of others really isnt.

  41. A.... C....

Love listening to them - no matter what decade!  R.I.P. Dave Swarbrick

  54. P.... N....

This was the best! So glad Richard carries on-I've seen him many times! And, that the Cropedies carries on the best of the folk of the UK.

    P.... N....

I have heard he is now touring with a trio!

  55. 1.... ....

like dave pegg said they swing like the clappers .

  56. Y.... M....

    いいきょくだぉ

  57. b.... ....

Saw Richard Thompson in concert on Vancouver Island twice in 2013-amazing.

  58. H.... T....

One of the most rousing calls to music-making ever. I was fortunate enough to see the "possessor of the magic touch" once again this past week. He just keeps getting better!

  59. C.... C....

Yes indeed, this song combines all the things that make music so wonderful!

  60. p.... ....

    Go consummate yourself.

  61. C.... N....

Do you not see the irony in using a quote from thousands of years ago that everything has already been done? People have been saying forever that culture has reached its peak and everything new is awful.

  62. F.... H....

epitimizes the 60's & 70's that i/didn't don't care about spelling and other mistakes but rather that flow somethin' a kin to white bird bert janish/john redborne stuff and more wild gentle giant

  63. p.... ....

Yeah, it's out there but few if any radio stations will play the songs worthwhile listening to. I'll stick with the music of yesteryear. Like Solomon said: all that has been done under the sun has already been done. I'll miss out for sure though I'd rather bliss out listening to songs like this.

  64. U.... W....

    Still love this song...

  65. T.... ....

Just a magical song from an incredible band at their peak. It's a shame this lineup did not last longer than it did.

  66. f.... ....

Don't fall into the old trap of thinking that the music of yesteryear was better than contemporary music,it isn't.It's true that most of the commercial music that saturates todays media is formulaic and uninspiring but there are 100's if not 1000's of bands/artists producing amazing music today, you just have to seek it out, it will not fall in your lap, a blinkered attitude to contemporary music,(any style) will mean you are missing out on a whole world of listening pleasure. Happy searching.

    f.... ....

    fridgemagnet
    Contemporary music is shit.

    f.... ....

    @JasonJason210 some is, some isn't

    read the comment again

    f.... ....

Don’t fall into the trap of believing that what you think really matters.
There is nothing original about the regurgitated garbage that passes for music today.

  67. v.... ....

im 24 and I hear the trash played on mass to people my age, with the likes of x-factor it brings me to say that people can sing but not very often can they right a good and real song and put good and real meaning to it

    v.... ....

    you're 30 now--- I'm 22

  68. f.... ....

    Ahh love it love it

  69. m.... ....

Then again my grandparents might have said the same thing about the music I listened to in the 70s.

  70. p.... ....

yeah yeah yeah...it was better in the old days etc

  71. p.... ....

    thanks grandad

  72. M.... ....

A brilliant first track to a fantastic album! So much talent and I'm glad to say I've been lucky enough to see Fairport many times (with Dave Swarbrick too!). Too young to see them when RT was still a member though.

  73. C.... M....

Now that I rediscovered her, this would have to rate, at least a tie with her best. COME ALL YE does seem an absolutely perfect combination of all the things that make music enjoyable.

  74. P.... I....

    nah m8 i'd get desensitised

  75. d.... ....

    45,000 views? that's fucking ridiculous.

this should be playing on every record player, computer or ipod at LEAST once a day.

    d.... ....

What do you call yourself doggie for death? What a creepy title

    d.... ....

    170.000, happier? Who's counting.

  76. C.... M....

I'm getting re-addicted to her amazing and unique voice, doing amazing unique songs. Had not listened to her in years, came across her on Pandora and BOOM, I am hooked again. Hearing Allison Krauss do a version of EVERMORE that was truly great & fun...but Sandy's version was a bit better. Miss ya Sandy

  77. J.... B....

just discovered this album in the last week after reading the Joe Boyd auto-biog. Awesome - I think I've got some good fun discovering other Fairport albums to come! I do remember my parents taking me to a late 80s Fairport gig and I do remember an amazing fiddler so maybe i was Swarbrick?

  78. h.... ....

    song of live xxxx

  79. F.... ....

    Rousing indeed.

  80. C.... B....

Still magical after all this time!

  81. m.... ....

    timeless

  82. J.... T....

LOL...to all of you worried about the time. The louder you play it and the louder you sing the less you worry about things.

    Just play it louder.

  83. J.... T....

LOL...to all of you worried about the time. The louder you play it and louder you sing the less you worry about things.

Now on the internet.....Lovin It sorry Sandy couldn't see it

  85. X.... D....

Still aweful. I only can tell you that after much times listening it's sounds great.

  86. D.... .....

liege & lief has to be one of the best albums ever. My copy got all scratched up and keeps skipping :(

  87. c.... ....

fairport so magical, such wonderful memories of Cropredy, Rest in peace Sandy, missed by many.

  88. s.... ....

After 45 years of collecting, buying and selling records from garage bands to cajun to black gospel quartettes, I have never heard of a group purposely playing out-of-time but I have an open mind. I would be more open to believing that this was an early take and they decided that the looser version was better than a later take but like I said........

  89. m.... ....

@powellallan In other words, you've wasted your lives.

  90. H.... S....

Wow, this returns many wonderful memories! One of the Great Albums, every piece a gem. It has been a long time coming but now I'm home again.

  91. E.... R....

I remember being at University in Cape Town when this was new: strange, wonderful, weird and slightly smoke-tinged days....beards and bellbottoms, Indian shirts and beads. And that was just me..B-) Wonderful album; thanks!

  92. C.... H....

@powellallan So true. Though I'm 21, actually, and a lot of my favorite music is, like this, stuff that my parents introduced me to.

  93. A.... M....

    beautiful voice .... sandy..

  94. M.... B....

    awsome song.

  95. K.... K....

@getorphan I too still have the original vinyl, in great condition. The music just gets better with age!

  96. P.... D....
