Fagen, Donald - Slinky Thing Lyrics
It was a October morning
Near the carousel
I met a light young beauty
And we talked there for a spell
We walked up by the Great Lawn
A madman on a bench screams out
Hold on to that slinky thing
Hold on to that slinky thing
We went to a party
Everybody stood around
Thinking, hey, what's she doing
With a burned-out hippie clown
Young dudes were grinning
Some punk says, Pops, you better
Hold on to that slinky thing
Hold on to that slinky thing
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
Today we were strolling
By the reptile cage
I'm thinking does she needs somebody
Who's closer to her own age
I try not to worry
What tomorrow may bring
I'm just gonna do my best to
Hold on to that slinky thing
Hold on to that slinky thing
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light
Today we were strolling
By the reptile cage
I'm thinking does she needs somebody
Who's closer to her own age
I try not to worry
What tomorrow may bring
I'm just gonna do my best to
Hold on to that slinky thing
Hold on to that slinky thing
She smile
There's a sun in my sky
She laugh
That's my power supply
She stay with me
I know heaven is right here on earth
She go
I cry
She smile
There's a sun in my sky
She laugh
That's my power supply
She stay with me
I know heaven is right here on earth
She go
I cry

Fagen, Donald Slinky Thing Comments
Steely Dan was never about Rock, it was about good music. Now go fuck off.
Deep groove, love the album
Pure style and class...
Venturing into Donald's solo music is a blast. Loved "The Nightfly" now giving this project a listen 💖💛💚
the groove is good, melody is poor morbid melodys
helder sufiano - I'm sure somebody loves you........ somewhere.
Find them, please...
No rock elements left, no edge left, very few surprises left.
melody wise is poor he should stick with what he does best
I understand but this is so polished as to be almost supersmooth.
I know what you mean about no rock edge but thats a tad unfair as The Dan have done it all and this latest incarnation explores another direction with instrumentation so subtle, you need a few listens to appreciate.
just my opinion.
@helder sufiano - You should stick to what you do best. Just remind me what that is again?
These Cats Smokin
The kids just got a cool cat - and this is his soundtrack. Bravo
Steely Dan has been the soundtrack of my life. What a great gift. Seems like there was a song that fit for everything we've been through just as we encounter it. Slinky Thing is no exception.
Maistro is back !!
SD doing their funky thing again! Love the way this is put together!
more light more light more light lol what is he talking about
Positive vibes.... more light 🌝
It is subtlety
It sounds like he's singing 'More alike' to me, especially through decent headphones. It also sounds like he calls her a 'lithe young beauty' instead of a 'light young beauty'.
Listen to this with good headphones 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
This band is always full of surprises.

It was an October morning
Near the carousel.
I met a light young beauty,
And we talked there for a spell.
We walked up by the green lawn,
And my heart began to sing.
Mad man on a bench screams out,
“Hold on to that slinky thing,
Hold on to that slinky thing.”
Went to a party.
Everybody stood around,
Thinking, “Hey, what’s she doing
With a burned out hippie clown?”
Young dudes were grinning,
I can’t say it didn’t sting.
Some punk said, “Pops, you better
Hold on to that slinky thing,
Hold on to that slinky thing.”
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light.
More light, more light, more light, more light, more light, more light.
Today we were strolling
By the reptile cage.
I’m thinking, “Does she need somebody
Who’s closer to her own age?”
Try not to worry
What tomorrow may bring.
I’m just going to do my best to
Hold on to that slinky thing,
Hold on to that slinky thing.
I’m just going to do my best to
Hold on to that slinky thing.
(Repeat and fade)
She smiled,
There’s a sun in my sky.
She laughed,
That’s my power supply.
She stayed with me,
I know heaven is right here on earth.
