This is kinda similar to "Glamour Profession" (the rhythm is very close) but with a more live, big-band sound. Infectious, hot and tight.

i dont know that anyone short of earth, wind and fire and steely dan (mr fagen) make such 'tight' recordings. a pleasure..

@45insite quite right. My 7 yrs  daughter already caught that. For now, she focuses on french music whose lyrics she can understand (we both Frogs, no one's perfect), but I can't wait till she masters English enough to taste such powerful tunes/lyrics as DF's.

Hi Rence,I did not play on this track.But I love the chromatic harmonica.Stevie Wonder is so good at it . I have a high school friend that is as good at the harmonica as one could be .The man on this track is great too .

Love the piano and the sultry, tight groove here - it's as soulful as an EWF classic and as addictive as the NIghtfly album :)

@andocrates I did too, but eventually i love all their (SD) music and solo stuff.

I felt the same with SD's 'Two Against Nature' and DF's 'Morph The Cat'. It's got to have something of a good Bordeaux, it takes time sipping it, to discover its richness.

One of the 1st LPs I inheritated from my older brothers was SD's Aja. I've been loving Becker/Fagen ever since. The 2nd revolution came when DF's The Nightfly was released. I wouldn't be the same without SD+DF !

Can't understand why I didn't like this album first time I heard it - this song and others are classics. The little touches - the off-melody guitar lead etc. My life has been so enriched by this music.

I think I had read somewhere the song is about a break in a relationship, BUT that relationship could very well have been with his addiction-- who knows? And I don't think he's sayin'. Bottom line, and I think we all can agree-- this man IS a GENIUS! ;-)

Thanks for your words. I'm more than familiar with John Klemmer. I absolutely love his tenor sax! Still have Klemmer LP's I bought in the late
70s and early 80s. He seems to be a somewhat mysterious and obscure artist. An incredible musician. Where has he and his music gone? Klemmer is one of the reasons 'I love good sax.' ;-)

This song makes me smile... whenever I hear it. At first, having read the title, I thought it would be one of those depressing breakup songs, but it turned out to be filled with positive energy (at least the way I see it). And oh those sophisticated harmonies - so good.

Insanely catchy, very funny and brilliantly produced. :) Love the swing jazz vibes that simmer all around this song and of course especially those horns at the end - their lines could have come from a Benny Goodman track! :)

Although I love the guy, I never thought I'd find comfort in him. Suffering the end of a relationship and this song cracks me up. The icing on the cake is that horn riff kicking in at 3.38, it's levitation stuff. Makes me smile. Glorious.

Sarcastic/straightforward, this is beautiful

I've bought every Album from Steely Dan and Donald Fagen (some several times due to loss in flood, etc) Donald is easily up there with some of my all time favorite artists (Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder to name a few). He has a style that is unique and one of the few artists that I love almost every song (some albums I loved every song).

Love this CD! Good Stuff!! 40 or so odd years of phenomenal music; keep writing it, and I'll keep buying it!!

exactly, what is learnt from an interview with David Letterman? Absolutely nothing....... he's all in it for laughs. Donald deserves better than to have this 1/2 rate clown use him as his 'strait man' to bounce his jokes off of. He should respect the guy and treat him as he is. An artist.

Yeah, well, Letterman is gone now, retired, and not greatly missed. Yet Donald Fagan is still here with us, producing musical greatness regularly. Likely he will continue to do so, until he escapes the madness of human existance as did Walter Becker... et al.

I couldn't agree with you more. Letterman is an idiot and he should've been put out to pasture long ago. In a world that makes sense, maybe he would be.

Donald Fagen does it again. The man has been entertaining me for I know at least 25-30 years.

I wished he'd sat down and chatted with that clown Letterman. Maybe he'd actually have a normal conversation and we'd learn a little something about Fagens creative process. I'd love to have learned a little something about where it was recorded etc; but Letterman's an idiot. He's probable have an idiotic jokester conversation with Leonardo DaVinci.

No one in the history of popular music has as rich and creatively diverse legacy as Donald Fagen. no one. sorry Mr. Berlin I would love to see Donald approach the challenge of doing a concerto or a symphony (like Gershwin). He has a unique sense of chord change that would be wonderful to hear in a lengthy piano type concerto. Just a thought.

But I know he could do it if he wanted to.

And though this has no bearing on the subject, I have to wonder what musicians admire others. I was just listening to Leon Russell, and though their music has nothing in common, I wonder if each like the other's music.

I would assume that all steely dan listeners have keen ears. well, one listen to say, the first five seconds of fagen`s singing here shows that, indeed, his voice has aged: it`s gruffer and gone down about, let`s say half an octave or so.

still fine and aging like a ripe wine, yes, but "the same voice"? no, most definitely not.

Been listening to Fagen/Becker since age 11 back in summer of '72. Steely Dan has remained my fav for now 40 years. Never put out a bad record IMO. Always thought of Fagen as a clever & sly poet. Got "Sunken Condos" in the mail on Thursday & have been playing it in my car non-stop. This cut is by far my fav of the favs on the record. Although about a breakup, the words can be used as a metaphor for any personal transformation, really. Will see his show when he hits the road next year.
