Fagen, Donald - I'm Not The Same Without You Lyrics

Since you've been gone
An awesome change has come about
My life is different now
I'm not the same without you

I'm evolving
At a really astounding rate of speed
Into something way cooler
Than what I was before

I feel much stronger
Than I have in years
My mind is sharp
And my spirit's sound

Now people tell me
The shape of my face is changing
I've grown an inch taller since July
What in the world is going on, please tell me

Without you
I now have eyes to see
Some other destiny
A futurescape of bright arcades
In which I bring off
Heroic escapades

I can hold my breath
For a really long time now
I can hold my own
I'm not the same without you

Without you
I now have eyes to see
Some other destiny
A futurescape of bright arcades
In which I bring off
Heroic escapades

Since you've been gone
It's like somebody switched the stars back on
I can see into everybody's heart
And everybody's dreams

I don't need sleep anymore
But if I closed my eyes
I'd sleep the sleep of the gods
I'm not the same without you

Fagen, Donald I'm Not The Same Without You Comments
  1. I.... D....

    Sweet jam

  2. M.... R....

This would explode the minds of emo fans...I guess emo isn't still a thing...probably because of this song.

  3. E.... G....

I'm definitely not the same w/o Steely Dan! Aye.

  4. J.... C....

" I can hold my own"

  5. J.... C....

Clean as a lean dick dog.

  6. s.... b....

Una maravilla, como todo lo que hacen steely Dan.son unos genios musicales.

  7. p.... ....

    Masterpiece, about being clean

  8. L.... K....

I need to listen to this a few more times, and see some other future.

  9. L.... X....

This is kinda similar to "Glamour Profession" (the rhythm is very close) but with a more live, big-band sound. Infectious, hot and tight.

  10. L.... J....

i dont know that anyone short of earth, wind and fire and steely dan (mr fagen) make such 'tight' recordings. a pleasure..

  11. M.... B....

Sounds like a person who is deluded and trying to convince themselves they are better off with a former SO.
Reminds me a great deal of the beginning of Sting's song "Big lie - Small World"

  12. F.... ....

    Amazing!!!

  13. P.... P....

Only Donald Fagen could use the word evolving in a lyric and get away with it lmao!

  14. E.... D....

brought me to tears- thank you so much-

  15. L.... S....

one of the greatest stars of the 20th century, amazing

  16. .... ....

    very good!!!!!!!!

  17. m.... ....

After more than 40 years down the road, still sharp as sharp can be!

  18. T.... S....

    Genius.

    T.... S....

Tom Shaw and more importantly....still genius!

  19. E.... D....

    molto figo ... cool

  20. G.... ....

LadySoul502, I just can say I can understand you, and I'm glad to hear that music helped you. A great kiss

  21. S.... S....

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the definitive musicians of our century.

    S.... S....

    Both centuries.

  22. n.... ....

Cranked this up after I quit my last job. Great track.

  23. O.... C....

The very gospel of the Lord!

  24. c.... S....

Imagine he's talking about sobriety as opposed to a chick, and it's hard to tell if this is just more steely dan genius at work ...

    c.... S....

    Wow - great insight! Thanks.

    c.... S....

I think all love songs lend themselves to other addictions being substituted for the object of affection. Really gives insight into WHY the struggle is so real.

  25. L.... ....

Pardon my language, but this song *really* helped me to get over my asshole bastard of an ex. Thanks Donald! :D

    L.... ....

@Max Alfred JOE LA SEMOULE Well said! :D

    L.... ....

    Best comment ever

    L.... ....

Your language is fine. Music in my opinion is one the the pinnacles of human expression, closed eyes and headphones will uplift spirits.

    L.... ....

    @45insite Indeed!

    L.... ....

@45insite quite right. My 7 yrs  daughter already caught that. For now, she focuses on french music whose lyrics she can understand (we both Frogs, no one's perfect), but I can't wait till she masters English enough to taste such powerful tunes/lyrics as DF's.

  26. K.... S....

Harmonica. That is Sammy Lane and Stevie wonder. And this cool cat .

    K.... S....

Tell me more... Do u mean yourself played harmonica on this track???

    K.... S....

Hi Rence,I did not play on this track. But I love the chromatic harmonica.Stevie Wonder is so good at it . I have a high school friend that is as good at the harmonica as one could be .The man on this track is great too .

  27. K.... S....

I'm not the same without cromatic harmonic .

  28. H.... ....

John Popper, please note....this is what tasteful harmonica virtuosity sounds like.

    H.... ....

    Not a Synth???

    H.... ....

Will Galison on harmonica...similar to Stevie Wonder in style.

  29. P.... H....

smoother than a worm wearing a silk tie

  30. D.... S....

if you have recently been fucked over by a snake, this song makes total sense

  31. S.... ....

This is my favorite Steely Dan song ever!

  32. b.... ....

Its a bout a breakup. Most definitely. And the coolest diss I have ever heard.

  33. B.... S....

I can't figure out how you don't dig the hell out of this album the second you hear it.

    B.... S....

@andocrates i like this cd on thefirst play .. morph the rat never grabbed  me

    B.... S....

Man - I do dig the fucking hell out of this recording

    B.... S....

    I'm buyin' it.

    B.... S....

Love the piano and the sultry, tight groove here - it's as soulful as an EWF classic and as addictive as the NIghtfly album :)

    B.... S....

@andocrates I did too, but eventually i love all their (SD) music and solo stuff.

  34. F.... D....

I felt the same with SD's 'Two Against Nature' and DF's 'Morph The Cat'. It's got to have something of a good Bordeaux, it takes time sipping it, to discover its richness.

  35. F.... D....

One of the 1st LPs I inheritated from my older brothers was SD's Aja. I've been loving Becker/Fagen ever since. The 2nd revolution came when DF's The Nightfly was released. I wouldn't be the same without SD+DF !

  36. D.... B....

Can't understand why I didn't like this album first time I heard it - this song and others are classics. The little touches - the off-melody guitar lead etc. My life has been so enriched by this music.

  37. i.... ....

I think I had read somewhere the song is about a break in a relationship, BUT that relationship could very well have been with his addiction-- who knows? And I don't think he's sayin'. Bottom line, and I think we all can agree-- this man IS a GENIUS! ;-)

  38. i.... ....

Thanks for your words. I'm more than familiar with John Klemmer. I absolutely love his tenor sax! Still have Klemmer LP's I bought in the late
70s and early 80s. He seems to be a somewhat mysterious and obscure artist. An incredible musician. Where has he and his music gone? Klemmer is one of the reasons 'I love good sax.' ;-)

  39. B.... M....

hello i love food sax - (you familiar w/ john klemmer?). would like to say here that upon reading your comment, it actually felt like i was swimming in your thoughts of Steely Dan, musicality and its appreciation. i appreciate you for the sentiment and respect you have for these two adventurers of reason, rhyme and TONE! Mabuhay ka (with respect).

  40. S.... A....

Bryan & Donald are still making top music (always did)

  41. i.... ....

Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music is one of my favs too.

  42. S.... A....

I was 12 back then, you wrote it all, my fav band (OK, Roxy Music too)

  43. P.... d....

Buy the CD, the lyrics are inside.

  44. g.... f....

clever and sly, indeed..reminds me of "Things I Miss the Most"..putting a cheerful countenance on personal disasters

  45. C.... T....

I would like to request the lyrics to Donald Fagens Full Album
    Sunken Condos. Thank you

  46. G.... C....

    get it baby!

  47. B.... S....

This song and Marlene are my favorites from this cd. They just sound like traditional Dan songs

  48. K.... C....

    I can hold my breath..

  49. T.... D....

    This is so spot on.....

  50. Q.... ....

Damn, still making music. Keep going Fagan, one of my greatest influences for extended chords/voicings

  51. C.... i....

    No, it's "Sunken Condos" dude!

  52. B.... H....

My favorite song on the album. But I want a new dan album!!!!

  53. k.... ....

3:37 demon horn line, absolutely demon!

  54. J.... S....

Well-said. Listening to a Dan album is like spending quality time with an old friend.

  55. h.... ....

Love this but am hooked on the crazy p edit of it.

  56. j.... ....

  57. 4.... ....

This album is good, but it is no Kamakiriad, or Morph, or even "Everything Must Go".

    4.... ....

    47barolo "Nightly" was the best.

    4.... ....

Kamakiriad is the best Fagen one

  58. d.... ....

    Real artist right here, hooked

  59. M.... D....

There's simply no stopping this genius! The Dan--in whatever manifestation--is just the most amazing band out there!

  60. m.... ....

    Amen to that

  61. T.... ....

This song makes me smile... whenever I hear it. At first, having read the title, I thought it would be one of those depressing breakup songs, but it turned out to be filled with positive energy (at least the way I see it). And oh those sophisticated harmonies - so good.

    T.... ....

Insanely catchy, very funny and brilliantly produced. :) Love the swing jazz vibes that simmer all around this song and of course especially those horns at the end - their lines could have come from a Benny Goodman track! :)

  62. B.... M....

    Thank god for Doanld Fagen

  63. g.... ....

Although I love the guy, I never thought I'd find comfort in him. Suffering the end of a relationship and this song cracks me up. The icing on the cake is that horn riff kicking in at 3.38, it's levitation stuff. Makes me smile. Glorious.

  64. G.... T....

    Sarcastic/straightforward, this is beautiful

  65. T.... R....

I've bought every Album from Steely Dan and Donald Fagen (some several times due to loss in flood, etc) Donald is easily up there with some of my all time favorite artists (Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder to name a few). He has a style that is unique and one of the few artists that I love almost every song (some albums I loved every song).

Love this CD! Good Stuff!! 40 or so odd years of phenomenal music; keep writing it, and I'll keep buying it!!

    T.... R....

    WOW ! Same Here !

  66. s.... ....

exactly, what is learnt from an interview with David Letterman? Absolutely nothing....... he's all in it for laughs. Donald deserves better than to have this 1/2 rate clown use him as his 'strait man' to bounce his jokes off of. He should respect the guy and treat him as he is. An artist.

    s.... ....

Yeah, well, Letterman is gone now, retired, and not greatly missed. Yet Donald Fagan is still here with us, producing musical greatness regularly. Likely he will continue to do so, until he escapes the madness of human existance as did Walter Becker... et al.

  67. J.... M....

I couldn't agree with you more. Letterman is an idiot and he should've been put out to pasture long ago. In a world that makes sense, maybe he would be.

  68. L.... ....

    SOO RELAXING

  69. p.... c....

me gusta tiene estilo jamiro, y sa armónica , un mini seteve wonders

  70. A.... I....

    go Fagen go

  71. S.... ....

    SMOOOOOTH

  72. P.... ....

fuuuuuu this sounds good. why have i only just heard there's a new album by donald fagen.

  73. I.... C....

    feliz aniversario,fagen,brazil

  74. I.... C....

    feliz aniversario,mr.fagen,FROM bRAZIL,fantastico,VIVA DAN ,FAGEN AND BECKER;

  75. m.... M....

como siempre, una maravilla de sonido y voz......

  76. J.... J....

    fantastic track

  77. 7.... ....

The master of the funky groove (and profound intellectual lyrics to boot)-this dude is 65 years old and he still is amazingly hip and on top of his game

  78. a.... p....

    happy birthday Donald!

  79. j.... ....

Genuary the 10th 2013: happy birthday, Mr Fagen!

  80. b.... ....

The single best and coolest musician of the last 30 years. I will play this song to the woman who has broken my heart two times now. Its a perfect coda.

  81. J.... S....

You gotta love this mans lyrics and how well they go with the rhythm. One of our times most underrated song writers.

  82. B.... R....

it's the most positive break song ever....Alanis Morresette, and all the other ones like Lilly
Allen concentrate on having to put up the pain and simultaneoulsy loss a dependent loved one. This song is the most zen break up song ever.

  83. j.... z....

    Wow! Extremely talented man!

  84. R.... W....

Donald Fagen does it again. The man has been entertaining me for I know at least 25-30 years.

  85. s.... ....

I wished he'd sat down and chatted with that clown Letterman. Maybe he'd actually have a normal conversation and we'd learn a little something about Fagens creative process. I'd love to have learned a little something about where it was recorded etc; but Letterman's an idiot. He's probable have an idiotic jokester conversation with Leonardo DaVinci.

  86. s.... ....

No one in the history of popular music has as rich and creatively diverse legacy as Donald Fagen. no one. sorry Mr. Berlin I would love to see Donald approach the challenge of doing a concerto or a symphony (like Gershwin). He has a unique sense of chord change that would be wonderful to hear in a lengthy piano type concerto. Just a thought.

But I know he could do it if he wanted to.

  87. K.... T....

Adele? How could they do that? I'm not sure about their ears are tuned correctly.

  88. K.... T....

By the way, being Christmas Day tomorrow, Pull up the Dan Hicks music from Crazy for Christmas. Carol of the Bells and Somebody Stole my Santa Claus Suit. GET YOUR CHRISTMAS ON!!!

  89. K.... T....

It almost sounds like a tiny bit of laryngitis. But still wonderful.

And though this has no bearing on the subject, I have to wonder what musicians admire others. I was just listening to Leon Russell, and though their music has nothing in common, I wonder if each like the other's music.

  90. s.... ....

I would assume that all steely dan listeners have keen ears. well, one listen to say, the first five seconds of fagen`s singing here shows that, indeed, his voice has aged: it`s gruffer and gone down about, let`s say half an octave or so.

still fine and aging like a ripe wine, yes, but "the same voice"? no, most definitely not.

  91. b.... ....

    Rock on

  92. s.... e....

Donald Fagen still has the same voice of 40 years. Simply amazing.

  93. n.... ....

That baseline got me here! What a tune!

  94. E.... C....

This should have been the best selling iTunes album of 2012. Not 21 by that overated Adele!

  95. m.... ....

It sounds like the Royal Scam album up to date.

  96. i.... ....

Been listening to Fagen/Becker since age 11 back in summer of '72. Steely Dan has remained my fav for now 40 years. Never put out a bad record IMO. Always thought of Fagen as a clever & sly poet. Got "Sunken Condos" in the mail on Thursday & have been playing it in my car non-stop. This cut is by far my fav of the favs on the record. Although about a breakup, the words can be used as a metaphor for any personal transformation, really. Will see his show when he hits the road next year.
