Everything But The Girl - Don't Let The Teardrops Rust Your Shining Heart Lyrics

Sorrow is a lonely road
Where the rain like your tears
Beats heavy on the roof above your head
Tomorrow is a lovers' town
That's been beaten down
And the hands of winter holds the life we've led

Instead of drowning in despair
For I find small comfort in a bottle
When we're apart
Don't let the teardrops rust your shining heart

I used to drive all night for you
While the children were asleep
And as the dawn broke on your room
Back into my house I'd creep
Where my husband slept alone
Of course he must have known
But we always hide the truth
For fear of losing what we own

So don't forget the words that we choose
And constantly misuse
They were written down every time we were apart
Don't let your teardrops rust your shining heart

    IN MEMORIAM
Jo Scott - my beloved friend, who died tragically in New Orleans on 6 December 1988.
We used to sing this song to each other, if either of us were feeling blue and then eat a litre of ice cream! You went away much too young, Jo - but while I live, you never died XX

deze song bewijst eens te meer dat je vele elpees/ceedees moet doorspitten om de echt memorabele nummers te vinden. Dit hoor je niet op hitparades en zelfs niet op de radio. Schitterend!

don't bother! It's good but the original version cannot be surpassed. A fantastic piece of poetry and pop music, delivered with the feeling and heart that only the composer (and Tracy) can.

Thank you! This is the song of my first love, in 1986. I learned to play on my piano for may girlfriend... oh what sweet and gloomy memory...

    lol @ Holly Cole.........the murdered version !

Holly Cole's version is amazingly heartfelt. It's on her Don't Smoke in Bed album... which also includes I Can See Clearly Now, Tennesee Waltz, Blame It On My Youth.... Well worth picking it up

i've waited for this for ages...thank you...

Oh thank you so much for putting this up. I had a tiny bit of it in my head from years ago and it took me three hours last night to find the name of the song so I could look it up and here it is. It breaks my heart - I haven't heard it for so long but used to listen to it all the time. That voice is one of the best things in life.

@wsmith6079wpg I've not heard that version but hopefully it does justice to this great song, the original.

...waited and waited...lol...thank you...it's been a long time since I've heard this. Reminds me of high school days as an exchange student in another country...far far away...cheers..xx

My first introduction to this song was from Holly Cole's live album It Happened One Night. While I love hearing this song arranged for a larger body of instruments, this simpler, purer original recording is possessed of a timeless beauty. I'm so glad I got to hear it! Thank you for posting it!
