Can somebody explain the "I can’t go back to what I was: Metallica without the drugs"

Metallica sucks when they are sober and happy. A shadow of themselves you might say. He's essentially saying he wasn't living up to his potential, partying way too much, pretty much being a hedonistic selfish individual who was largely unhappy with his life and himself. He can't go back to that. Most of the album revolves around his daughter, the time she was sick, and was written largely in the hospital while she was sick. Themes involve isolation, gluttony, self-hatred, negotiating with a god you aren't sure is there, abandonment, loss of self, loss of culture, etc. A couple of lines after that there's a line that says "There's no home for a hollow man", he's referring to the Invisible Man which is also seen in the video for "It Remembers". The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells is about a man who turns himself invisible. The themes in the book largely deal with identity, isolation, loss of culture, betrayal. There are also themes in the album that refer to Vonnegut & Kierkegaard who Jesse is also familiar with.

Someone hit my friends arm in the crowd which caused them to punch me in my brain stem at etid’s Christmas show in buffalo. I have no regrets. So what if my vision cut out for like 5 seconds it was worth it. And I’ll take a shot to the brain stem every god damn Christmas show if I have to.

Someone explain ETID in a nutshell if possible. I realized I've listened to them for 12 years but am confused by their approach. Low Teens was darker I know but are they intended to be party metalcore? I sound so dumb I'm just trying to really nail down particular genres

I dont think they particularly aim to be metalcore, but they also touch genres such as hardcore and souther metal. so with that said, I think ETID is the finest rock and roll, sir.

Definitely a fun party band! I've given up trying to strictly define genres. Underoath is my favorite band, they are as complex as mainstream music comes so I gotta roll with the flow. Love that southern metal, Big Dirty and New Junk Aesthetic rule. What threw me off was Last Night in Town, a terrific album but they were going for post-hardcore freakouts and time shifts. By Hot Damn the southern or well, just plain up rawk started to appear.

Eh - to each their own.  Not a fan of much of their material between New Junk and Low Teens.  Just my preference really.

Christopher Khan give their song El Dorado a shot. It’s my favorite song of theirs that has that older ETID sound. Plus the outro is fucking insane.

Interesting to compare this video to the Logic of Crocodiles vid, it even has what I guess is a reference to Last Night in Town in the lyrics. Low Teens is a fuckin great record, to me it's kinda like a sequel to Hot Damn with some of the musical style and themes of the lyrics. It has that cynical, sleazy, neurotic, nihilistic rock and roll thing that is so great about them but kinda stripped down and purified. LOVE this band so much and have done since 2001, true greatness.
