Everclear - Santa Monica Lyrics
I am still livin' with your ghost
Lonely and dreamin' of the west coast
I don't wanna be your downtime
I don't wanna be your stupid game
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't wanna be the bad guy
I don't wanna do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just wanna see some palm trees
I will try and shake away this disease
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
I am still dreamin' of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away
I don't wanna be your good time
I don't wanna be your fallback crutch anymore
Walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and risin' in my own weird way
I don't wanna be the bad guy
I don't wanna do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just wanna feel some sunshine
I just wanna find some place to be alone
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
Yeah watch the world die
Yeah watch the world die
Yeah watch the world die
Yeah watch the world die

sat here in astonishment for 5 minutes thinking "EVERLAST made this song?" I'm a dumbass
Having just seen these guys not 2 days ago, the craziness when they played this, last of course, was intense. Love it.
You cant tell me that the first line of this song doesn't sound like the man, the myth, the legend, Terrible Johnny
Man I had goosebumps too bro! Music is the heartbeat of the soul
My ex made me feel like this. Now we’re broken up and I don’t feel like a ghost or zombie simply going through the motions anymore. I wish I’d ended its sooner. Please, if someone treats you badly or acts as if your pain does not affect them, end it.
How did u all end up here again listening to this with me
God this still roxxxxxx
Millennials Wish They Had Music Like this!!!
Ok but like this song literally came out one day before I was born, and I love this song
Every time this song comes on Pandora, I literally pound the shit out of my steering wheel drumming along to this song. There are some really cool snare drum rolls in this song. It’s fun to drum along to this song while singing as loud as you can.
When I heard what this song is actually about, it changed my point of view of this song.( not in a negative way ). But never less it's still an amazing song.
Bring back memories of the 90s
My sincerest ! Great memory for you WITH A GREAT BAND ! CEANK IT MY YOUNG FRIEND LET POPS KNOW YOU REMEMBER !
i was 100% born in the wrong era. this is my favourite song! i’m lucky that my parents have raised me well and i’ve been listening to this type of music since i was little. i turned 14 in 2019 and on the 19th December i was lucky enough to see elton john for my birthday. i wish i got to grow up in the 70s and 80s, would’ve been fantastic.
With my big black boots and a old suitcase.
This may be the best song anybody could ever write about suicide. I friggin love this song
Im eleven, and I think I was born in the wrong generation
Or you've just got good taste in music!

Love the girl in this video. She has the attitude down perfect, especially when she flips off the camera. Thought it was my ex-wife for a moment.

BOYCOTT VEVO!
I've been listening to a lot of Everclear lately, but for some reason I couldn't remember this one so I wasn't sure about it. I heard it on the radio this morning and recognized Art's voice and the sound. I had to come and listen to it.
I miss these guys. They remind me of when I was little and nothing mattered. Rocking out in my car seat in the back of my mom's car as she drove around in a world that always seemed sunny and warm.
My fav song😀👌
YouTube in 2020: Hey wanna listen to a song from your past?
Me: yea sure but why now
It’s all about your algorithm path bro. xD
Anyone listening in 2020.
Yes sir
Meee! And probably every year in the future too
Well, I just saw this song within the last six to nine months and the video changed. Where she blows her finger tip after making the gun.
She use to lean back and laugh too.
Either the video was swapped or it is another Mandela Effect. Knowing his girlfriend killed herself puts a twist on it for sure.
Named my first car monica after this song, because it shows where im gonna go with the freedom of driving.
My brother and mom would make fun of this song and say my big black boots and my old suitcase
And little me jamming in the back seat
😄😄

If it was 1995 every year that would be fine with me
This is one of my all time favorite songs.

PALM TREES .. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍💋
I almost went to Santa Cruz 😛
Still one of favorite bands of all time 2019 still listening
Amazing band!
20 different men screaming these lyrics on Mount Everest rn
This is such a good fuckin song
Why do people dis Elverclear? They have there own sound. This is very written song. They are not a grunge copy cat.
This song reminds me of me and my dad going on a road trip to the beach
I've always enjoyed how the early part of this song builds as it progresses. :)
He is singing about a California that no longer exists
Nope everyone's to uptight to strict things will never be like how they used to be. And as much as we love technology its the main reason why things will never be the same
He's not singing about California at all. He's singing about getting out of a bad relationship and bad time. Santa Monica is just a metaphor.
In an October 2003 interview with Songfacts, Alexakis explained the song:
I'm using a place where I grew up and palm trees as iconic references. It's what I grew up with. I grew up in a seaside town called Santa Monica, which is like L.A. but on the coast. I've lived in cold places and been in bad relationships, and I think everybody has a place in their mind that is like a safe haven. It's also about getting away from bad times ... the ending of something is also the beginning of something new, whether it's with someone or getting out of a bad job, a bad way of life or an abusive relationship
To ad my opinion. I actually believe he’s singing about his brother that died. I remember him saying something about him jumping off of the Santa Monica pier to kill him self and he saw his brother when he was down there and his brother said “it’s not your time” so I believe that’s what he’s partly talking about. I mean the line “ I am still living with your ghost” that’s not about an ex. That’s my opinion. Great song and the part in the video where he walks in the ocean wearing a suit always stood out to me, like no fucks given
Released on this day in 1995.
Un dia como hoy (05/12/95) hace 24 años salió esta canción y aún hoy no me canso de oírla 🥇🙋♂️🎸
Perfect theme song for Santa Monica, California. Beautiful place in it's own right.
we are renegades looking for a future with out you looking at use like we ants
I would give 5 years of my life to be back in Santa Monica. Sooooooooooo beautiful.
This song defines the back seat rides in my father's car when I was younger
Don't forget to stop and watch the world die. :)
^^^ (Lonely and dreaming of the West Coast.)
Soo 90s
wow a good boy locking for his father
I saw them open for Tool back in '94 or '95 (can't remember exactly- was a lifetime ago) and they absolutely kicked so much ass. I've never seen that much energy on stage before or since. If it hadn't been Tool, I don't know if any other band could've followed that act!
1 hit wonder!
Still great
Moving back to So Cal tomorrow after leaving the state for 6 years and living all over North America. This song kept me fucking sane while I was gone.
This song always takes me back to summer of 96'. Middle school punk who still had to call a land line to get a hold of my friends and pray to God the parents never answered. Rolling around town in a train on our BMX bikes with flashlights strapped to our lizard skin pads. Never going to get our driver licenses....oh my how times have changed.
This song has one of the best intros in all of music.
So many good memories from this song! Playing the Megadrive at Christmas time with all my bros and drinking soft drink then going to the beach and doing bombies off the jetty. Those were the days!
Im still doing her sleepwalk dance and dreamin of her face
Old but gold?
Love it
holy shit this song is pure gold
What a prophetic song. 2019 Santa Monica is literally a zombie city of dying homeless junkies, needles, human poop, and negativity. If you "Want to watch the world die," go to Santa Monica. Wear rubber boots, watch your step.
This is just a good song
unbutton that shirt
ALWAYS a favorite!
Rock on my brother!
i do believe i just talked to him...at the Jets game...yes i did...
I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game
With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
I will try and shake away this disease
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
I am still dreaming of you face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away
I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fall-back crutch anymore
I'll walk…
Epic intro. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Friends and acquaintances all over tell me that this tune, and the band in general, fits me to a T...
An awesome compliment.
I think...
Watching and hearing this again brings back weird memories, I was going through a strange time back in the mid 90s and experiencing new things coming out of college and the mid 90's alternative-rock was the best time to date after the 80's new wave/pop era.
That blue G&L bass is gorgeous
We are here to help you. 😋
America is the effin best. You don't like? Gidda fug out.
Clean your syringes! 💛
Echaalive.
Studio City .L effin A.
I know this song is about more, but I finally found a great song that expresses my need to live by the beach!
Such an awesome band
I never listened to this song before I looked at Art's wikipedia page. It says he tried to commit suicide off the Santa Monica Pier when he was 12 because his brother died of a heroin overdose and his girlfriend committed suicide the same year. I'm not sure how I feel about the song after listening to it, but I do know he put a lot of passion into all of his songs including this one.
