Evelyn Evelyn - Sandy Fishnets Lyrics
Sandy Fishnets, washed up on the shore.
What’s she catching, and will she be sore?
Sandy was the prettiest of all.
She talked French, she came from Montreal.
Sandy got a bed all to herself.
We slept in the trailer to the right.
Sandy told us stories late at night.
She spoke of ships and sailors,
And a sea so big and wide.
She had lots of uncles and was always tired.
How they loved her in those early days.
Mrs. Bulger let her go away.
All her uncles drove her off to play.
Time went by and Sandy’s all grown up.
The lines of uncles dwindled,
And the pirate stories stopped.
Then one day Melissa May showed up,
And Sandy had to share a bed with us.
And will she be soaring over the sea,
With the wind in her sails and a knife in her teeth?
At the helm of a ship, on its way to a distant shore,
Bermuda or Thailand, an uncharted island,
Sandy, we’re all getting older.
What will they do with us,
When they are through with us?
Sandy, what are we sailing for?
Christmas morning, 1993,
Presents waiting underneath the tree.
There’s a box for me, a box for me.
No gift for poor old Sandy to be seen.
We found Sandy sobbing quietly.
Uncle Gerald said he liked Christine.
Mrs. Bulgar said she had to leave.
Three days later, she was gone,
The day she turned thirteen.

Evelyn Evelyn Sandy Fishnets Comments
4:13 just posting it cus it is my fav part
Wow that was very well animated!!
Right when they said "She was gone the day she turned 13" I actually shivered-
It would be her 39th birthday today, 28.12.19 💙
When they said "share a bed with us" could they mean that she also had to start doing chores cuz earlier they said she didnt do chores. Or just me thinking dis?
Another thought
The pirate theme/vibe
Sandy used to be captain, which is supposed to resemble her doing nothing such as chores and having her own bed. And then Melissa May came and became the new "captain" and Sandy ran away trying to make a new "crew" as in escaping but in reality she drowned or was killed and dumped in the ocean. Idk dude
LilyTDH Yes, they meant both. She stopped getting special treatment at around that time because she was getting older and wasn’t the favorite anymore

I love how no one is taking about mrs. Bolger
wait in the tragic events thing a girls name was sandy i just realised thats sandy in this. she sailed off and never returned
OMGGGGGG
What will they do with us?
When they’re through with us?
Sandy,
What are we sailing for?
Was i the only one kinda bummed when i found out their names? To me, they should stay as evelyn and evelyn. Them having real identities kinda messes with the magic
Has anyone else also noticed that there is only one part in this is whole video clip where Sandy actually has fishnets on?
That part is when she is sobbing, when she's extremly sad, and also near the end of the video/song. Sandy was compared to/thought of as a mermaid. Maybe the fishnets represent her being stuck and in panic not being able to leave an awful place (state of mind), exactly like when a fish (a mermaid (Sandy)) is a stuck in a fishnet, or maybe because the fishnets only appear in the end of the video they mean that she's close to her death, also exactly what happens when a fish is caught in a fishnet.
At least this is my theory
From what a lot of others are saying and based on the lyrics of the song, Sandy is a child prostitute/ sex slave at an "orphanage". The "uncles" are actually just clients and the "kissing on the lake" was the men bringing her out on the boat to have sex. She was a popular prostitute and that's why she had so many uncles. She had to share a trailer with the twins because they recruited Melissa and were running out of room. Sandy didn't get any presents because Mrs Bulger didn't want her anymore. That's why she was crying because she said her uncle like Christie more, and Sandy had been getting ready for the uncle, explaining why she was wearing her fishnets. Sandy fishnet might have been her prostitute name if that was supposed to be her signature article of clothing. When Sandy found out that they were getting rid of her when she turned 13, and tried to follow her dreams and become a pirate amd escape, but the harsh weather caused to go overboard and drown, her becoming a mermaid after her death because she could finally "close her legs" and stop being a prostitute. And then they found her body washed up on the shore after her failed attempt at escaping. That's what I think happened at least.
This might be like uhm 8 years(?) late but in my own understanding of the song the conjoined twins were in the brothel and then there's this girl named Sandy. Sandy is the most favoured girl in the brothel (she has her own bed, she never had to do chores, she has lots of "uncles" and was always tired). It said in the song how they loved her in those early days meaning she was really favoured and the twins would see what the "uncles" would do to Sandy then one day a new girl named Melissa May came and Melissa became the most favoured girl. Sandy was not the most favoured anymore, only a few "uncles" would "like her or have her". I saw this one comment about Sandy being depicted as a mermaid and it shows the girl went into some sort of sexual abuse and likes her legs to be closed. On Christmas day, the twins had their gifts but Sandy didn't have one (probably because she's not favoured anymore and no "uncles" would want her anymore), they found Sandy crying. "Uncle Gerald said he likes Christine" meaning no one would like to be with Sandy anymore and she would be no use for the business anymore so she had to leave the brothel.
That's my own understanding of the song and yeah I know, 8 years late.
Did you know that Evelyn Evelyn has a song called "Evelyn Evelyn"?
I kinda have a theory,
So, ‘Evelyn Evelyn’ were ‘Sandy Fishnet’s’ crew when they played ‘Pirates.’ They lived in an orphanage, but as I know she left at 13. Now onto my point, I think ‘Evelyn Evelyn’ and ‘Sandy Fishnets’ were on a ship in the sea, but they had to throw ‘Sandy Fishnets’ out of the boat, for as she was too.. ‘old’ and she couldn’t be at the orphanage anymore, and ‘Evelyn Evelyn’ didn’t want her to suffer alone. And my point is, ‘Sandy Fishnets’ asked them to, so they did.
-I’m too lazy now.-
tea ! Lol, I like this theory but the song is actually about child prostitution
*Wilsheebasaur*
thinking about this song is the first time i did the anime trope of "grab your shirt and wrinkle it on your chest as if you were trying to tear your heart out"
well, there goes my childhood.
the "what's she catching and will she be sore" line gives me chills.

To be honest, this is one of the saddest songs I've ever listened to; it gives me the shivers everytime I listen to this or to most songs of the album. Thank you for making this.

For everyone who’s upset about Sandy’s ending, don’t worry!
In Evelyn Evelyn’s actual tour, they said that Sandy Fishnets followed them on Twitter and they go and have coffee with her every weekend. Which means she isn’t dead and probably even escaped the prostitution rings/brothels and lived a normal life!
Cutsie Productions she’s not real

This is performed by Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley, but in the story, the twins are both girls :)
One of the singers is, but canonically they are both girls
I'm scared. My name's Sandy.
I’m confused what Sandy’s story is can someone explain
The whole story is pretty morbid so be warned. So Basically they lived in a camp where people used the girls to make explicit child images. She was used by Ms. Boger as a child prostitute, which is why she had so many "uncles" and why she wears fishnet stockings, she is the favorite out of all the girls and makes the most money for Ms. Boger. Eventually however Sandy grows up and she is no longer treated as well as she used to be. She turns 13 and she is told she has to leave, she attempts to fulfill her dreams of being a pirate however she supposedly drowns shortly after leaving.
the art style kinda reminds me of flapjack

WHAT’S HORRIBLE, please, play again.
When I found out what this song was about, I was shocked. This is a reminder to stay safe.
I know I'm 3000 years late, but someone tell me if this is basically what happened. I want to be able to explain to my friend.
Sandy was a girl that was trapped at a child pornography studio, with her "uncles" which were actually pedophiles and as they said, brought her out to "play". Since she brought them money, they didn't make her clean. After some time, the "uncles" didn't want to "play" with her anymore because Melissa May showed up, they didn't find Sandy appealing anymore. Since she was turning 13, she also didn't count as a child anymore since it was her teen stage, so they told her to leave. She used a smoke signal and tried to sail off, but drowned. (Or any other options, I just found that one the most believable) The police came from the signal and broke up the studio, sending Eva and Lyn to the circus.
PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.
Cheli ._. Sounds about right
6:39 ummm.....what's with the numbers on the corner of the screen?
Oh, those are the animation frame numbers. Probably an underwhelming answer, but it's what they are X)
this whole song leads you to believe sandy is approaching her adult years, at least 18, maybe even into her 20s- and then it hits you with the fact that she was barely 13 and my god. this song is heartbreaking
On 2:53 is depressing and it explains how her “uncles” touched her and she didn’t want to keep doing since it says what’s she catching and it left her sore so that’s why she killed herself
I'm not sure if this is even sadder than “the tragic events of sptember”
I wish i could animate like this
catty cat queen god, same though
So I was thinking that the place that runs this kills the kids after they grow to old to not expose them for what they are doing, which is sad

HazyPuffz ur an og
Good job on this you did really good
Theory:
In the first scene, she is definitley dead, thr water surrounds her entire face and she does nothinh, even if she was alive , just asleeo when she washed up, she drowned. The twins' eyes in 4:08 seem to imply the girls saw something that scared them (not just the typical stuff they see day to day) and it doesn't look much like Sandy's moving in the boat until it was across the waves and she sails away in the scene directly after the girls falling asleep.
It may be that the girls saw her harmed and perhaps even witnessed her death, but she was placed in a boat and floated out to sea (a good way to dispose of the body without getting caught or spending too much) and their brains repressed that and decided that it'd be better to imagine her living more idealistically, like living out those stories she told when they were all younger. So when they remembered Sandy's body being pushed to sea they replaced it with her escaping to be a pirate.
3:38 turned my stomach. I can't even estimate how old Melissa May must be in that drawing but it seems it's just going to repeat.
When I was younger listening to this I was upset at Melissa May but she's another victim. She's going to need to grow up just as fast as Sandy, working hard and taking a maternal role until she can't anymore. And then she'll wash up dead just like Sandy in the first few minutes.
>w> Y'all should see who Neil Gaiman is married to
dear Gods, i am so disturbed by this, but still love it
The animation is beautiful! I love it!
I think that the lyrics “sandy Fishnets, washed up on the shore” doesn’t mean she died, rather she just came back from “kissing one of her uncles on the lake.”
I think mrs. Boldger did kill sandy because in the song it said one of
the "uncles" aka costumer said he liked christine (because she is more young) to mrs. Boldger and mrs. Boldger knew that he used to
like sandy and the reason he doesnt like sandy no more is cause she is older and so mrs. Boldger knew she had to kill sandy cause no more "uncles" would want a 13 year old and they want the young
ones so when sandy was crying it was because she knew she would die and would never make her childhood dreams come true so when mrs. Boldger killed sandy she put her body in the sea to make it look like sandy drowned and it wouldn't look like sandy was killed by mrs. Boldger.
Well, that's really a neat theory. You obviously thought it through. Unfortunately, the real situation is much darker and more depressing than that.
Mrs. Boldger didn't kill Sandy but she did send her to sleep in the cabin where the 'used up' kids go (like a girl with 2 heads) since she wouldn't be bringing in the money anymore. Sandy was crying because no more 'uncles' liked her anymore. She also thought Mrs. Boldger was punishing her and she didn't understand what she did wrong. She only knew that whatever she did, was really bad. Bad enough to where nobody liked her anymore. (btw, the reason that Evelyn and Evelyn were kept around is because Mrs.Boldger had something special to offer customers just in case someone was a real sicko and wanted a little girl with 2 heads.)
She had been abused so much, that by this point, she didn't think of that as abuse. She thought it was totally normal and the customers really were uncles showing her love. She thought that what they did to her was love. This is why she is portrayed as a mermaid in some of the video. So, basically, when a younger girl showed up and got all of the love and attention, it completely crushed her. They no longer brought her gifts or wanted to take her out in the boat. She felt as if she had done something wrong. She didn't understand the situation at all. This is often the way it is in real life abuse situations.
Then Sandy's grief turned to rage. Before she left on the boat, she set the place on fire. It burned to the ground and she likely died of something related to that. Like smoke or being burned.
@MediaSubliminal wow thats more realistic cause sandy is a kid and while growing up us kids don't know what right and wrong is and sandy probably thought all kids had to go threw what she had to and just did it cause she thought it was "right".
The part where Melissa comes tells me the true meaning of it after I studied the lyrics for a bit, this is just my opinion btw.
The uncles give money to sandy if she does sexual things with them so she can get money for Ms. Bolger so she could live with Eve and lyn
Then Melissa a young one like sandy was before 13 so Melissa comes when sandy is 13 since Melissa must be much younger they want todo it with her instead since sandy isn’t getting ms Bolger money she tells her she has togo.
This looks like Don’t Starve.
What happened to sandy? I heard the tragic events and some of the songs. But what exactly happened to sandy and who are those 'uncles'?
She was used for prostitution from all her 'uncles' and since she was getting older they lost interest in older women so they made her leave and the day she turned thirteen she went to go fufill her dream of becoming a pirate but she falls and drowns herself
@Cookie Creams oh... OK thank you.
@Rosie Watson But not before she set the place on fire. I don't think that's in the video really but it's in the book. You would have to hear the whole album; it's one big long story.
did you listen to tragic events part 2? That tells a lot more about Sandy.
i've got a theory
so after the twins got saved from chicken man they where taken to a orphanage, then they met sandy, sandy was young she was also popular, sweet, and beautiful, her uncle took her to a boat ride because it was her dream to be a pirate, and sexually abused her, this went on,
then she became friends with the conjoined twins, and acted like a motherly figure, because her mother wasn't there for her, because her parents were abusive and sent her to an orphanage ran by her aunt
then her uncle forced her into a relationship, then she got stockholm syndrome, she liked the relationship, she got kicked out by another family member, because she kept sobbing about her and her uncle breaking up, so she went to sea to run away, and died
thats a good theory!
But the "uncles" aren't actually their uncles, they're pedophiles who pay to have sex with the children at the underwood(I think thats what it was called)
at the christmas part, if you pause it just right, you can see sandy smiling. it’s not a happy smile; it’s more like a sad smile. like she’s remembering something.
also i know that it’s movement lines, but still, it looks like a sad smile
peach soda this is really heart breaking
The saddest thing is that 'Sandy Fishnets' was probably her stage name or hooker name. She probably didn't even have or know her real name.
As to the theory I believe, I think she was supposed to be sent to another prostitution rig, but she didn't want to so she killed herself.
Funfact: Back then as soon as you hit your period (if you were a woman) you were an adult and were to be married at 13. Meaning if you had that condition where you got your period at 5...I think I'm gonna puke
What the hell? Hope you don't mean the time when this is set 🙃
@Altoid Bazingá no i mean like, the 1800s and backwards
*I Am Crying*
I enjoyed the whole album but as a sex trafficking victim this song hits me hard
I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH
I always thought she was kicked out because that would be around the time she starts menstruating and they didn’t want to deal with birth control?
Nah it's a child prostiturion place and pedos don't like teens
This should be a movie I swear
It's be a great movie :D
Lovely lyric of how her uncle drifted her off to the lake and kissed her (note sarcasm)
Btw in the last shot Sandy isnt wearing her fishnets anymore
I love it
Moτh ? She’s not wearing fishnets through the whole thing
Personally I think she was thrown out because she was "too old" and she had built a fantasy world in her head and those of the twins. She couldn't survive very long on the streets by herself obviously.
let me cry for a minute,
Here's the thing, in Tragic Events II Evelyn both made a note to mention that *all* the girls seemed to just disappear around their thirteenth birthdays, that this wasn't something that only happened to Sandy. I think Sandy knew what was going to happen once she turned 13, so tried to sail across the lake before she could be killed but was ultimately caught by Mrs. Bolger or one of "her uncles" and then drowned in the lake as punishment.
Beautifully made!
5:43 if you look on Wendy's face closely, you can see a smile on her face flashing.
Like she's in conflict.
On the one hand, she's getting older, so she's being treated poorly (the frown).
On the other hand, Evelyn and Evelyn (and she's possibly thinking about everyone else, though judging by the lyrics, Evelyn, Sandy, and Evelyn were pretty close. At least closer than others) are still being treated well (the smile)
Sandy* (for the first line you wrote)
I honestly think it’s because of her mental state, but it could be that too. ‘Cause it looks like a sketch more than a smile. Or it could be to fit the rough animation style.
That could be true too!

"Sandy, we're all getting older. What will they do with us, when they're all through with us? Sandy, what are we sailing for?" holy shit that hit hard-
One thing I noticed (though probably not intentional) the young girl who replaces Sandy is named Melissa May and as I was looking up stuff about the album I discovered that Melissa May is also the name of a pornstar. I think it’s a coincidence though
7:21 Wait, Ashley’s last name is Hamilton...
Awesome, wow!
Oh crap I though sandy was like 16-18
For y'all wondering, here's the lyrics:
Sandy Fishnets, washed up on the shore.
What’s she catching, and will she be sore?
Sandy was the prettiest of all.
She talked French, she came from Montreal.
During chores she never had to help.
We would see them kissing on the lake.

Not certain if I am reading too much into this, but the Christmas scene 5:44, I know the artist used a rough style on drawing the characters, but Sandy seems to flicker worse then the others, almost as if it were to show her own mental state breaking down at this point? Or perhaps foreshadowing?
Pen chan that’s a really good point!
@rabbitwink Thanks :) , yeah it struck me as odd, the art style is rough in that scene, but Sandy just stood out so different at that point.
Oh, I'm pretty late, but in an official blog post made by Amanda, she said that the twins were friends with "some chick named Sandy" on MySpace. That confirms that Sandy was at least alive for another decade or so!
When I was like ten or eleven I discovered this song. I didn't know as much english back then as I know now but I had a little and tried to understand a little bit.
My theory was that Sandy was like their bully or something because in the middle when they say "and will she be sore" I understood "and will she be sorry" so I thought she did something to the Evelyns, when I saw that she was playing with a electronic game while they played with wood I thought they were envious of her. Then when they say "the day she turned thirteen" I thought they said something like "she turned to the sea" and I took it literally and assumed she actually became a pirate.
Now that I understand everything in the song and have listened to the whole album this just makes me want to cry. I would say what I understand now but it's based on most of the stuff in the other comments, no need to repeat everything that everyone already knows
The most underrated song in the most underrated album
I also like the nod to tragic events II at 4:30
This story is so fictional, yet real.
The characters may be fake, but things like this can actually happen to children and it's disgusting.
