Eric Clapton - Traveling Riverside Blues Lyrics

If your man gets personal,
Want you to have your fun.
If your man gets personal,
Want you to have your fun.
Well, come on back to Friar's Point, mama,
Barrelhouse all night long.

I got womens in Vicksburg,
Clean on into Tennessee.
I got womens in Vicksburg,
Clean on into Tennessee.
But my Friar's Point rider, now,
Hops all over me.

I ain't gonna state no color but
Her front teeth is crowned with gold.
I ain't gonna state no color but
Her front teeth is crowned with gold.
She got a mortgage on my body, Lord,
A lien on my soul.

Well, I'm going down to Rosedale,
Rider by my side.
Lord, I'm going down to Rosedale,
Rider by my side.
Well, we can still barrelhouse, babe,
On the riverside.

You can squeeze my lemon till
Juice run down my leg.
You can squeeze my lemon till
Juice run down my leg.
That's what I'm talking about!
But I'll be going back to Friar's Point, mama,
Rocking to my head.

  3. N.... ....

    Robert Johnson does it best

  4. K.... M....

This is more of a cover. Zeppelins version is more of a tribute bc they pull lyrics from different Johnson songs and the riff is completely different.

  5. B.... J....

that's it I'm painting my strat like that

  6. C.... C....

    Rest forever Billy Preston

  7. J.... S....

    supeerrr!!

  13. I.... Z....

What scale does he play in the solo part?

  14. L.... M....

Amazing. Clapton just can’t be beat. I’ve been a fan since the beginning but his blues are beyond compare. He sings and plays with his soul!

  15. M.... N....

    Zeppelin covers this far superior.

  16. r.... ....

    zeppelin plays is 100x better!!

    r.... ....

    remogaggi36 Nope. Clapton > Zep.

    r.... ....

    sid goku - Opinions.

    r.... ....

sid goku and yours is wrong.

    r.... ....

Yeah. But. It’s not the same song.

    r.... ....

@sid goku my nigga you wrong

  17. A.... W....

Give me the Zep track of the same title anytime. This is doing nothing for me.

    A.... W....

Andrew Watt I have to agree. I love Clapton. But Zeps version is super dope.

  18. B.... O....

    who is the slide guitarist?

    B.... O....

    Buddy Ollie Doyle bramhall ii

  19. M.... S....

30 years as a fan of Clapton he can still out play anybody as a 72 year old man the best ever with SRV

  20. a.... ....

love a slide..bramhall can do it.. also has that voice..like ro hear him on this one

  21. Z.... L....

ehh Eric lost me when he went POP... Zeppelin's all the way

  22. M.... M....

eric clapton sucks. how dare he butcher this song

    M.... M....

YOUR A FUCKING LOSER THAT'S  IS A FUCKING FAGGOT AND DONT KNOW MUSIC YOU FOOL

    M.... M....

still not convinced why this music is good. jjust getting insults from some gay guy '

    M.... M....

hendrix? are you talkning about the guy that blew clapton off the stage? Yeah Eric thought he was the man until hendrix came along and played , Eric heard him and went backstage and cried like a baby.

    M.... M....

Magic Mike you do know that, he composed both guitar intro and rift, everything else is just beat, yea the recording version of this is not great but gotta give it up to him... hes pretty old and can out play the man with sun glasses with ease.

    M.... M....

Magic Mike what made you say that? You commented a year ago but I'm just curious

  23. c.... a....

Trendo tema , versionado por este gran guitarrista como lo es Eric Clapton

  24. L.... K....

    Long Live to God!

  25. p.... a....

"pony-tail blues", began sometime in the 80s- i guess it was inevitable but it's never really been my thing.

  26. W.... ....

    Steve Gadd

  27. .... ....

hm... not bad... not bad... but why they play blues fast ? I think that blues is more slowly music. No? sorry for my bad english

    .... ....

Blues is divided in different "sections" over the years. Yes, the original "blues" from Mississipi was slower, but if you listen to Robert Johson, Johny Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Bronzy, you'll see that it were getting faster.
I love it all, slow blues, fast blues, it's the root of the best of what we have listen along the years (Led Zeppelin, SRV, Jimmy Hendrix, Beatles, Justin Bieber...ops, wait). sorry for my english too.

    .... ....

@Claudio Ricardo Tormen thank you. yes Robert Johnson became played more fast than old blues in 1920 etc... its true

  28. M.... R....

    3:04 LOL!

  29. d.... ....

any idea if this is available on cd?

    d.... ....

+dirtguy5 Eric Clapton; Me and Mr Johnson

    d.... ....

+dirtguy5 Actually, the cd with these recordings is called 'Sessions for Robert J'. The 'Me and Mr Johson' i mentioned in my other reply is mostly other takes and some different songs, but mainly with the same musicians. Get both!

    d.... ....

It's included on his Robert Johnson tribute album "Me and Mr. Johnson"

    d.... ....

Has a dvd with the cd!

  30. f.... ....

Clapton is famous for being a guitarist, but he's a great vocalist too i think

    f.... ....

@hjplant being a tribute to Johnson is something they fail to accomplish. They can't capture the spirit of the song and bring it to their own time. They try and fail to replicate the song's soul several years after. Clapton is unconvincing as vocalist, as if hesitating. I would only use this song as a bad example of how English musicians butchered Mississipi blues. If you're gonna do a cover, do it as the Zep did it, or don't do it at all.

    f.... ....

Kah'oo'un R. M. Klein This is from a album called Me And Mr Johnson, which is nothing amazing but Clapton is still a great guitarist. The way I see it is he's very influenced by Johnson and just wanted to do a simple cover album. It's nothing to write home about but I think if there's a cover out like Zep's, why not have a more traditional version? It's just a bit of fun in the end really.

    f.... ....

@hjplant except he doesn't play R. Johnson's guitar slides... Have you noticed that? He's got another guy to do his legendary absolute ear slides for him. Not saying you'd need Johnson's innovative use of the the guitar or his ears, but common, this is a sorry excuse for a cover 20 years later that even with a full whole band sounds but like a shadow of the badly recorded, eerie and miraculous original by Mr. Johnson.

    f.... ....

Kah'oo'un  Have you seen him perform these tunes live?  I know you haven't because Clapton plays all the slide parts live.  In the studio, he spreads the wealth.

    f.... ....

He got that deep in the throat growl like a bluesman do

  31. T.... P....

the fellow playing on the yellow sg is doyle bramhall II If ya look real close, his guitar is strung for a right handed player but doyle plays them upside down like Albert King.. just never heard slide work played that way lol ;-)

    T.... P....

@Niagara Tim Don't forget Jimi Hendrix playing right handed guitars backward :D

    T.... P....

@John Dover the reason i didn't include Jimi is because  jimi's strings were reversed for his left handed playing Doyle and Albert did not reverse their strings when they flipped their right handed guitars .. i.e.: high e string on top and Low E string on bottom which makes for a very interesting sound... and also Jimi never played slide and yes I haven't forgotten Jimi I happen to be a big fan of his :-)

    T.... P....

Cool, thanks for letting me know :)

    T.... P....

NiagaraTim There is a video of Jimi playing slide on an acoustic with I think a can of Bud.

  32. J.... S....

never been at this  Crossroads.  Womens in Vicksburg IRON bye my side Robert Johnston  making it plain  life is Travelling Riverside Blues

  33. J.... M....

Who's the guy playing slide on the yellow SG?

    J.... M....

    @David Haley Doyle Bramhall II.

    J.... M....

@Elle Lucius AKA one lucky dude!

  34. A.... B....

This is one of the best with mr.clapton,t y.

  35. S.... ....

E.Clapton is the greatest White blues musician.

    S.... ....

    except Stevie Ray Vaughn IMHO\

    S.... ....

and give jonny lang a listen. young but soul-sold

    S.... ....

    meet stevie ray vaughn

  36. S.... ....

    watch the master at work.

  37. J.... ....

ec does robert johnson justice as usual

  38. S.... M....

I'm a die hard Zepp and Clapton fan, and although they both do the song really differently they are both equally as good.
    Long live Eric and Jimmy!!

    S.... M....

Robert Johnson. He wrote the song

    S.... M....

@Nicolas L that's got nothing to do with it. Johnson wrote the lyrics which were carried over by led Zep but the instrumentals are near completely different. Johnson can't take credit for the instrumentals but he could for the lyrics, which in my opinion are sang better by plant

  39. J.... D....

What is that on that guy's finger?

    J.... D....

That's a guitar Slide. It's used usually to play in open tunings, for blues... and they are usually made of metal or glass, but this one looks like it's made of Ceramic.
    :)

    J.... D....

@dimiaraujo90 Never saw a black one like Doyle is using. Interesting. I have a real Coricidin bottle from the early 70s that I've used for 20 years.

    J.... D....

    @N1095A

Muddy Waters used one of these back ceramic slides, a lot, especially, in his last days.

    J.... D....

Now I have to find one. Although in 38 years of playing guitar, Slide has never been something I've been really any good at.

  40. j.... ....

    messed up SG

  41. B.... ....

Ol' Robert would agree with Clapton's version no doubt. Eric's got the passion for it and with his chops, nobody can touch his many Robert Johnson reprises! Good God boy you got some soul~!! Thanks Josh for posting

    B.... ....

idk the zeppelin version is pretty crazy

  42. R.... r....

some real tasty chops there Eric.

    Great job.

  43. W.... ....

    thanks man

  44. T.... ....

His name is Doyle Bramhall II.

  45. W.... ....

Who is guitarist in white tee shirt?

    W.... ....

    Doyle Brhamall II

  46. W.... ....

    Steve Gadd FTW

  47. L.... ....

2004. This session was shot right before Crossroads 2004 festival. :-)

  48. k.... ....

    billy preston
    ?

  49. z.... ....

    STEVE GADDDDD!!!! :D

  50. C.... S....

    I like Zeppelin's version better.
Id take Plants voice over claptons.

    Still amazing version though.

  51. t.... ....

    how old is this?

  52. L.... ....

Doyle Bramhall II is great :D

Clapton's sound wouldnt be the same without :)

  53. D.... R....

Robert Plant also sings that verse in Led Zeppelin's version of "Travelling Roverside Blues"

  54. m.... ....

Steve Gadd on drums but is that Billy Preston or Chester Thompson on Keys?

  55. s.... l....

and lets not forget about robert johnson....

  56. s.... l....

I don't like comparing this cover with zeppelin's cover. Both are so great.

  57. K.... G....

Did you ever consider that the reason he sat was because he was more comfortable. When I play the guitar I prefer to sit, I don't have back problems. It's immaterial whether he contributed to music, the point is he plays and shares his passion with others.

  58. K.... G....

I saw him live with Clapton. He was great, so I don't understand what your friend had against him but to make claims like that is ridiculous.

  59. H.... ....

he's fuckin fat..hey,shut your fuckin mouth and go learn maths

  60. H.... ....

the dude with that fucking yellow guitar is a fuckin dick

  61. C.... P....

I love zep version....jimmy page blows away clapton...his slidin`style at the time it was recorded was miles away from robert johnson and clapton....Page is god!!!

  62. F.... S....

oh my god i love this song
and claptons fender crash3 just a dream

  63. T.... A....

holy crap thank you for posting this, great find!!!! my fav song of all time probably

  64. d.... ....

i thought it was the other way

  65. A.... ....

I think the best versian is by Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, check it out :) This is good aswell though.

  66. F.... ....

this kinda sucks compared to zeppelin

  67. r.... ....

dude just for playing with eric clapton he has to not suck, its almost the same prestige as playing with bb king =.=, this version is great, its just played with blues rythm, which sounds different from the zepplin's one, both good imo

  68. d.... ....

i don,t like what they are doing to this song, it sounds silly in comparison to robert johnsons.

  69. T.... ....

    This sound more like funk

  70. T.... A....

    1) Clapton trying hard? He's played this song for years...
    2) who the fuck is billy?
    3) Nathan East has also played this for years on bass

I hope to God that you're not talking about Doyle III, he's a piece of shit

  71. d.... ....

OMG, loved this band, steve, billy and nate.
