Eric Clapton - Sign Language Lyrics

You speak to me in sign language,
As I'm eating a sandwich in a small cafe
At a quarter to three.

But I can't respond to your sign language.
You're taking advantage, bringing me down.
Can't you make any sound?

'Twas there by the bakery, surrounded by fakery.
This is my story, still I'm still there.
Does she know I still care?

Link Wray was playing on a jukebox, I was paying
For the words I was saying, so misunderstood.
He didn't do me no good.

[Repeat First Verse]

0% Dylan in this song, fake news. I don't know who the guy singing along EC is, but I'm positive it's not Bob

The guitar licks are from Clapton - no one could measure up to that. Hope I'm right!!

According to Robbie Robertson's 2016 memoir "Testimony," Clapton and fellow guitar whiz Jesse Ed Davis were in stitches listening to Robertson overdubbing what he calls his "deep dive-bomb whammy bar maneuvers" and that after two takes "they" said to him, "Nobody plays like that. Incredible! You play guitar like it's an East Indian tabla drum."

    tabla drum

One of my favourite love songs ever. Tha Band playing with Ron Wood in Shangri La studios, this song even if is a Dylan´s song appears in the 1974 Eric Clapton album "No reason To Cry", curious because all these mates were in The Last waltz all together.
Eric Clapton has always wanted to be a member of The Band ;-) (it doesn´t surprise me)
The Band is one of the most pure class & delicatesssen musicians in the world.

Rizz72 You have no clue what you’re talking about. Both Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton have told the story of him wanting to be in The Band

I haven't heard this song since 70s, but we used to play it all the time! I have tons of albums, but poor then guys had all EC albums I have about 10, but just listened to their album's. I had the southern and California rock albums, rod Stewart beatles guys had stones! nobody had a job just hung out listening to music. got my blues education! we had so much fun! I have great memories! bunch of nuts! lol I still find pot in albums I got stuck cleaning it! we threw seeds out 3rd floor window and one day noticed pot plants growing below window! lol!

I discovered this gem a short time ago...the unpolished interplay between Eric and Bob rough voices is genius! Plus Robbie Robertson's lead guitar is bliss...reminds me a bit of Planet Waves...isn't Garth Hudson playing the organ here?

    R.... A....

+Rolando Aponte Yeah, and I even seem to hear Levon's voice at 1'05'' at the end of the verse, "does she know I still care". Great song indeed!

    R.... A....

+Rolando Aponte All the members of "The Band" play in the album. Highly recommended

What album Robertson? # Rick Danko

  25. J.... D....

Yes Matt that is Robbie playing lead on this

  26. B.... ....

Matt Henderson...can't see a reply button on your comment, but I'm with you brother ! This song has moved me for a long time also......to have Bob Dylan, most of the Band and Eric all on one album was wonderful. EC really admired Robbie's guitar playing . Eric plays a nice bit of G tuned dobro on this track, but I especially love those low moaning sounds that Robbie gets with his wang bar. A much overlooked gem of an album from Clapton.......this one never really moved big volumes.

  27. M.... H....

I have loved this song for a long, long time. Tonight I told my son that E.C. was getting a Robbie Robertson sound on it. I kept trying to come up with something...Was it a joke between Bob and Eric? I looked up the album and Robbie is actually listed on the album. Anyone know wtf is up? That has to be R.R., right?

    M.... H....

+Matt Henderson Try to get the full album: "No reason to cry". It is a Clapton,s album, but we have all"The Band" on it, apart from many other guests, and of course Eric,s 70,s band. The songs are mostly spontaneous, but they sound today as good as never before. Best blues of EC, his first recording of Double Trouble.
The song "Sign Language" happened in a matter of minutes. Bob was there, and he gave it to Eric, and at the same time, he gave "Seven days" to Ronnie Wood, who also plays in the album

    @Pablo Pérez TY!

    M.... H....

This is kind of a curious thing, After The Last Waltz the guys from The Band were just enjoying themselves, hanging out at Shangri La in Malibu, "making music" as Rick Danko says, and were visited by some special friends, this track is one that resulted and wound up on Clapton's " No Reason To Cry " album.

    M.... H....

Matt Henderson yes, it was recorded in The Bands studio. Robbie is all over it

  28. D.... S....
