Eric Carmen - Boats Against The Current Lyrics

I know it's over
You know it's over
We're just going through the motions
But we're sailing separate oceans, world's apart
And you know it's breaking my heart

I was a dreamer
You were a dreamer
But perfection is consuming
And it seems we're only human after all
And we've both been taking the fall

But tomorrow, we'll run a little bit faster
Tomorrow, we're going to find what we're after at last
Feelings that we left in the past
There's romance in the sunset
We're boats against the current to the end

Maybe we're older
Maybe we're colder
So we disregard solutions
While we cling to our illusions once again
And we keep remembering when

Seasons are changing
Oh, reasons are changing
But the story isn't ending
So we find ourselves pretending one more day
Oh, while the years keep slipping away

Oh, but tomorrow, we'll run a little bit faster
Tomorrow, we're going to find what we're after at last
Feelings that we left in the past
There's romance in the sunset
We're boats against the current to the end

Oh yeah, tomorrow, we'll run a little bit faster
Tomorrow, we're going to find what we're after at last
Feelings that we left in the past
There's romance in the sunset
We're boats against the current to the end
There's romance in the sunset
We're boats against the current to the end

There's romance in the sunset
We're boats against the current to the end

Eric Carmen Boats Against The Current Comments

This song and Eric Carmen deserve a place in the any music hall of fame. It's every bit as good as anything written by Elton John/Bernie Taupin, Jimmy Webb, or Todd Rundgren

This, also, is one, of MY, all-time favourite songs.("She Remembered" and, "I'm Through With Love" are right there, also.) You remember the old line, re: the 'phone book? See Eric Carmen.(i.e., if Mr. Carmen sang the phone book, I would listen.)

There's always heartache in Eric's songs, but tomorrow...hope. My fiancee and I were in Catalina the Thanksgiving weekend in 1981 when Natalie died. It was miserable weather, wet, cold, raining. The ride over was choppy and nauseating. Not a time for boats against the current. We didn't hear of her death until we got back to San Diego. We did run into John Davidson at an art showing, who, when invited by a locally that night's square dance, laughed and said, "We're too square to square dance." X got the square in that exchange. Both Eric and Natalie were/ are of Russian extraction. No matter how bleak it may look today.... "But tomorrow..."

I always knew this was an Eric Carmen song. Remember my best friend playing it for me. Later, years later when he had to face the secrets he had kept for so long from me, he used this song as a way to explain. It will always be very poignant.

DEAR SIR ERIC CARMEN YOUR A GREAT COMPOSER JOY AND LOVE YOUR WORK
I CAN HELPING YOU LOTS OF LOVE TO YOU THANK YOU WOUTER JOANNES

  29. c.... ....

    Very astute, Andrea.

Eric Carmen wrote the song "Hey Deanie" after seeing "Splendor in the Grass", so it's natural to assume that he had a bit of a crush on Natalie - as we ALL did. :)

    c.... ....

classhumorist yes, Eric told me he had such a crush on Natalie Wood. We used to chat ( we fans of Eric ) with him long time ago, when Eric's friend and writer of Eric's biography had created a Blog, and Eric talked to us ( his fans ) as if he were our friend...Ohhh, I miss those days so much...so much indeed, so much

    c.... ....

    classhumorist xoxo from Argentina!💖

  30. h.... ....

    A.... A....

Charm, beauty, wit, class....and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.

    A.... A....

    She?...

    A.... A....

They're talking about Natalie Wood who is featured in this video.

    A.... A....

    O.K. Understood ...Thanks...

  33. A.... ....

What has this song got to do with Natalie Wood? I don't believe Eric wrote it with Natalie in mind.

    A.... ....

Eric Carmen had a crush on Natalie Wood and wrote "Hey Deanie" after seeing this movie. I think it also fits ok with this song.

  34. C.... G....

muy hermosa melodia que traspasa el corazon , y esa hermosa cancion ,recordada por los tiempos de los tiempos del amor, cuando es innolvidable.

  35. T.... F....

  41. g.... l....

I was a big fan of Natalie and this song is beautiful. Nice tribute!

  42. C.... ....

Being a great admirer of Natalie Wood myself, I loved all the movie clips and the photos with Robert Wagner (twice married to each other). I found this to be a perfect song to do such a sweet, and sad tribute to her. Thank you Andrea.

    C.... ....

    +Catroena me too...loved Natalie!

  43. H.... N....

just found out about this song. the title was from the last sentence of the novel The Great Gatsby. boats against the current means you just move on, as time passes you by

    H.... N....

Yes. . . Such a plaintive phrase written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Carmen did that phrase justice with this song. It sounds so sad. I'm thinking Eric Carmen knew and liked the book.

    H.... N....

    GRACIAS

  44. S.... R....

Andrea, obrigado pela postagem dessa verdadeira joia da musica.

  45. h.... ....

What you call a true American Rose they just make them more beautiful or talented as her these days....

  46. N.... S....

Kind if ironic to show montage of Natalie Wood, who died when she fell off a boat.

  47. N.... S....

Entire album was very good, too!

  48. r.... ....

    Most beautiful actress ever.

  49. M.... W....

    The Great Gatsby. Great song.

I'm with you. I think Carmen is a vastly underrated artist. Having said that,
why let the other poster bother you?. Art is subjective. If you like it, that's
    all that matters.

  51. o.... ....

This is insipid tripe. Drivel pumped out by an upper middle class cunt with nothing important to say or do.

  52. S.... B....

    Perfection is consuming
and it seems we're only human
    after all.

  53. m.... ....

I met Natalie Wood years and years ago. I think it was at a political rally here in NYC.
Could have been when Mayor Lindsay was running for re-election. Petite but gorgeous. Was wearing a red dress with white polka dots... never forgot it. Loved her movies including of course Splendor... Sad loss

  54. h.... ....

I remember well the year Natalie Wood died I was in high school waiting for the bus when her death was announced.

She had that something like so many of the smart sexy funny beautiful women during that time it was called MAGIC or SPARKLE.

They were like a rare diamond sparkling in the world of the cinema.

Still miss her all these years later and your tribute was amazing.

  55. T.... ....

Wow ! I love the song very much and your tribute is a gem ! Sweet Natalie Wood :) !

  56. .... ....

    Natalie pretty!

  57. m.... ....

how lucky to see him at disneylad i die to have gone back and seen them that would have been the ride to top all rides.

  58. j.... ....

who the hell does not like this song?

    j.... ....

Dumb Owl of Minerva apparently doesn't it...

  59. m.... ....

they are all good but this rare gem is is one of his best

  60. p.... ....

This song was written and performed by Eric Carmen, it's his song not Olivia-Newton John. It was on Eric's masterpiece album "Boats Against the Current"..........Olivia recorded it as an after thought for filler on one of her hit albums.

  61. R.... ....

    tremendisima!!

  62. M.... ....

Esta musica é linda demais, que saudades da década de 70.

  63. h.... ....

    @flyingshed
Eric wrote it and did it......Olivia just copied and did her thing with it.

  64. A.... ....

There is none greater than Eric. God's blessing on you!

  65. e.... ....

    Beautiful Tribute.....

  66. h.... ....

Hard to believe that this song first began as Eric breaking up with his then manager. It turned into so much more....

  67. S.... ....

I've had Olivia Newton-John's version for many years, and this is the first time I've heard Eric Carmen's version. Thank you for posting, JPLEAUD1.

  68. f.... ....

Estupenda combinación de música e imágenes, es como exponer el alma desnuda, como un himno a dos amantes...invita a hacer poesía en una hoja en blanco o en tu vida...Fili.

  69. c.... ....

The first time I heard this song I was blown away and couldn't figure out why it wasn't a top 10 hit. His record company screwed up and didn't promote this song.

  70. J.... C....

    Totally underrated singer/songwriter.
All By Myself, She Did It, Never Gonna Fall In Love Again, Change Of Heart, I'm Through With Love..... all great songs too!
As far as male vocalists go, I've always connected with singers Eric Carmen, Boz Scaggs and Chris Rea.

  71. l.... ....

It would be cool to hear Eric Carmen and Olivia Newton-John sing this together (she recorded it for her Totally Hot album in 1978)

  72. j.... ....

This man never got the attention that he deserves, I love him. Go to my channel and listen to my original songs, they are greatly influenced by Eric.

  73. B.... M....

    1. One of the best versions of Row, row, row your boat ever recorded
    2. Always thought it would be a great duet.

  74. R.... ....

He has so many great songs! I wish I had discovered him sooner!

  75. A.... ....

Everything Eric Carmen touched is magical -- whether he rocked or sang his heart out in a soulful ballad.

  76. P.... L....

This is a really great collage, and I'm starting to think this is Eric Carmen's best song, period. This one he did 'all by himself' - no borrowing from Russian Romantic composers....

The pictures add so much to the story - thanks!

  77. r.... ....

This is the title track of Eric Carmen's second solo LP. It reached #88 in 1978. The greatest hit from this album, however, was "She Did It," which reached #23 in 1977.

  78. k.... ....

Thanks for making such a fantastic video. I loved it!
I've never heard that song before but it's just wonderful.
