Eno, Brian - The True Wheel Lyrics

We are the 801
We are the central shaft

And we are here to let you take advantage
Of our lack of craft
Certain streets have certain corners
Sooner or later we'll turn yours.

We are the 801
We are the central shaft

And thus throughout two years we've crossed the ocean
In our little craft (row, row, row)
Now we're on the telephone
Making final arrangements (ding, ding)

We are the 801
We are the central shaft

Looking for a certain ratio
Someone must have left it underneath the carpet
Looking up and down the radio
Oh, oh, nothing there this time
Looking for a certain ratio
Someone said they saw it parking in a car lot
Looking up and down the radio
Oh, oh, nothing there this time
Going back down to the rodeo
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, here we go!

We are the table the captain's table let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
We are the losers we are the cruisers let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
We are the diners the final diners let's get it understood
Let's get it understood
Most of us are tinkers, some of us tailors
And we've got candlesticks and lots of cocktail sticks
We saw the lovers the modern lovers and they looked very good
They looked as if they could
We are the neighbours the nosy neighbours we think just like you would
We think just like you should.

  5. S.... M....

How can a rock and roll Hall of fame be taken seriously if Brian Eno hasn't been inducted years ago

    S.... M....

I think he is above that trivial R&RHoF shit (ABBA and Madonna??). If they had a Greatest contributor to sound hall of fame then yea or the GCoSHoF.

  6. l.... ....

Never quite understood this one, but then again I am just a country bumpkin.

  7. C.... M....

I saw a gatefold lp of this in a window for $35

    Glam Rock!!

  10. f.... ....

So that's where the talking heads stole their ideas from

    f.... ....

Definitely. But Eno also produced Talking Heads albums so that was the key thing.

  11. f.... ....

Still not found a certain ratio on planet terraaaaaa

  12. W.... ....

I read somewhere that the line, "We are the 801, we are the central shaft" came to Eno in a dream. Also, the band "A Certain Ratio" got their name from this song.

  13. A.... T....

Enos in my list of FOR MAD MEN ONLY.
    EXCELLENT MUSIC !!!!!!!!

  28. K.... S....

it's funny I never read the lyrics to this one. mr. Brian Peter George De La Salle Eno blew me away at age 22 in Western Pennsylvania. I bought this on cassette in 1991 from special order truly because of u2 and I was lost in life and clinged heavily to alternative music. this was prior to the overground exposing Eno like now. I think trouser press magazine mostly. in my own opinion the new wave started here.

  29. C.... C....

goddamn, the memories on this one...

  30. d.... o....

always truths hiding well crafted in this genie of a genius' pieces de resistance

  31. J.... C....

    Phil Manzanera' sound here

  32. t.... ....

music nerds. Just appreciate the eno and stop posting your stupid theories. As you don't have the answer. This is the best song ever written on earth. Eno. Bowie. other iconic artists accept it for what it is. No one cares what you think about it. The music stands on it's own. Let's get it understood

  33. w.... ....

    No Fripp on this album.

  34. G.... S....

Eno said it all in the first line. We are the 801. I personally think it's about immigration.
From one planet or island to the next. Its a very confusing message at best. We are the diners, the final diners. The immigrants are superior in knowledge but are trying to assimilate with a one way ticket. Their craft is disabled. They look like us but cant conform and don't fit. They are the losers. The captain gives up. They were the central shaft. They were looking for a metaphoric ratio cog that fit the shaft and failed. The mission is scrubbed. Gregg

    G.... S....

Ah, what? From one Enolecttual to another.

    G.... S....

Eno said he dreamed the lyrics "We are the 801, we are the central shaft" :)

    G.... S....

No, "The Central Shaft" is some sort of reference to The Big Bang exploding out of eternal nothingness. It's a reference to when eternal nothing turns inside out and becomes limited something. When this happens at the point of The Big Bang there's a central shaft of limited something created from the eternal nothing (hyperspace) turning inside out. Also the song "The True Wheel" refers to life being cyclical, happening over and over like a wheel eternally turning. Also "The 801" is evidence that Eno is involved in some sort of occult activity (I always suspected it) because "The 801" is derived from The Kabbala and there's a central shaft in the Kabbala and if you've ever seen a diagram representing the Kabbala you'll know what I mean.

  35. M.... S....

joy division borrowed this rhythm for 'A Means to an End'

    M.... S....

    Truly? [No pun intended.]

  36. P.... C....

    Let's get it understood....!!!??

  37. T.... ....

One of the greatest songs ever recorded

    T.... ....

Agreed. Third Uncle way ahead of its time, too.]

    T.... ....

    Truuuuueeeee

    T.... ....

Absolutely. I have a hard time narrowing down my favorite bands, albums, etc. A REALLY hard time.
But this song is definitely in my top ten favorites of. all. time. Easily.
