Eno, Brian - The Great Pretender Lyrics

Monica sighed
Rolled on her side
She was so impressed that she just surrendered

She was moved by his wheels
She was just up from Wales
He was fueled by her coals and he was coming to catch her

Lose the sense of time
Nail down the blinds
And in the succulent dark there's a sense of ending

Joking aside
The mechanical bride
Has fallen prey to the Great Pretender.

Let me just point out discreetly
Though you never learn
All those tawdry late night weepies
I could make you weep more cheaply

As the empty moon enamels
Monica with spoons and candles
Bangs around without the light on
Furniture to get it right on

Settled in a homely fish pool
Hung with little eels
Often thinks that travel widens
'Stay at home, the trout obliges'

Monica sighed
Rolled on to her side
She was so impressed that she just surrendered.

  5. T.... ....

Alkpote la sublimait, très belle musique

  6. M.... ....

I had a copy of the pressing of the album where the groove was threaded in such a way that the "crickets" just played on a continuous loop once the needle got to the center.

  7. s.... ....

    it's so "the residents"

  8. b.... ....

    Syd Barrett 5.0

    b.... ....

Brian was quite a kindred spirit. He kept trying to get Syd to come record with him on the first 3 albums to no avail. But the whole painters of music makes them brothers of a sort. Like to think one day they will play together and oh what a day.

  9. h.... ....

I love the "clanking" percussion. It sounds like an android lumbering towards you but slowly falling to bits.

  10. Q.... L....

OCTO PUTE la crème de la crème !

  11. M.... P....

    Crazy & grand..

  12. V.... C....

I wonder if Kurt Cobain ever heard this. At 0:18 it reminds me of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter by Nirvana. Like I've said before , it all comes back to ENO....

    V.... C....

fuck all the LOser Heroin Freaks of the "90's

    "empty moon enamors..."

  14. B.... J....

This song is a must-hear for anyone who thinks Brian Eno is just U2's producer or the guy who composed the Windows start-up theme.

    B.... J....

Or just the funny-looking gadget gimmick guy in Roxy.
The Windows start up theme, though, huh? I never knew. That's actually really interesting.

If you like to mix music try this. Bombay by Golden Earring, tight cut to Tokyo Joe by Brian Ferry then to this with a long fade out. It has stuck with me since 1980.

  19. J.... F....

Love this! Some of the melody borrowed from The Loving' Spoonful's "Rain on the Roof".

  20. P.... F....

    Cricket menace.

  21. I.... C....

This final sound reminds me the mother 2's sound effect. Anyone agree?

  22. K.... ....

Fish never think about their lack of elbows.

  23. a.... G....

May the Crickets loop eternally and their volume forever increase expodentially

    a.... G....

do it yourself, buy an EMS VCS3 ...

  24. R.... H....

    great album

  25. C.... N....

This was not possible in 1974, but Eno did it anyway, as part of Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy. Yes, he was that good. Not surprisingly, best album ever. Genius is like that. It has a "sweepingly excels" quality to it. That's Eno.

    C.... N....

+Chas No BTW He just does it, because that's who he is. Yeah, it's effortless, because it's not effort, it's identity. For Eno, it's as easy as breathing, because it's how he breathes. BTW, he doesn't breathe like the rest of us, and that's a good thing. He really is special.

    C.... N....

I heard he doesn't poop, either.

    C.... N....

    - but I hear he has been known to an secrete a hue of Cadmium Orange that still has scientists baffled.

  26. d.... o....

    the depths of his soul

  27. T.... R....

this was the last track on the album,it had a continuous groove, the crickets at the end could go on as long as you wanted

    T.... R....

This was the last track on Side 1.

    T.... R....

Last track on side one, but hey ho. The cricket sound is genius

    T.... R....

yep fell asleep to that chirping many times....

  28. c.... ....

oh yes i`m the great pretender.

  29. N.... S....

    this song is brilliant

  30. M.... ....

    Fantastic song.

  31. K.... W....

one of my favorite Eno songs

  32. s.... ....

love this song, sounds like eartbound

  33. C.... F....

    oh my gods

  34. W.... V....

I am going to pretend you are God... OK?

  35. m.... ....

"...she was so impressed, that she just surrendered" The controlled "mechanical" chaos in this song is beyond impressive, rise to the "cricket" crescendo is amazing.  "...all those tawdry late-night weepies, I could make you weep more cheaply' - pure genius.

  36. D.... R....

Those backing bells/guitars/keyboards?  A walk through the redwoods in College.  UC Santa Cruz.  I was so impressed, I just surrendered...

  37. S.... F....

To Maurizo, that song has nothing to do with this song

  38. G.... E....

This tune just makes me wanna trek through the woods.........

  39. F.... C....

    Master !!!

  40. J.... P....

This shit rules. Never wears out it's welcome.

  41. T.... R....

    endlessly!!

  42. P.... B....

If you look up musical genius in the dictionary you'll get a picture of Eno

  43. z.... ....

You know, putting ads on and making money off someone else's music is definitely copyright infringement.

  44. L.... L....

Eno is a special reminder of how music should be written .Very smart.

  45. b.... ....

Where is the "Oh, my heavens, this music has changed my life," button? "Like" is so inadequate, Brian Eno.

  46. J.... ....

I would buy it from you!

  47. J.... ....

It certainly does - I played it the other night and left it running. Hypnotic!

  48. I.... K....

    Agree for 100%!!!

  49. M.... L....

This masterpiece was recorded almost 40 years ago, whilst AM radio was playing trash like The Eagles, and Linyard-Skinyard. 'Classic Rock', which we must endure everywhere to this day was the garbage that was preferred by idiots at that time. Who knew it would last?

    M.... L....

    Lynyrd Skynyrd, idiot.

  50. G.... B....

    Love the crickets.

  51. E.... C....

    A true master piece

  52. R.... Y....

    Dilla - track 27

  53. T.... R....

no i'm not that Ian but 'that' Ian gave it to me knowing I was an Eno fan.

  54. T.... R....

i have a unplayed original copy from Eno,signed "to Ian with fond regards Eno".Worth anything?

    T.... R....

If you ever sold it I would have to kill you

  55. s.... ....

my most played album-cd, bought it when it came out in june 1975 with Ian Hunter's first solo...

  56. G.... L....

I just love listening to this song! H'mmm, music is pleasure!

  57. M.... L....

This follows Mother Whale Eyeless on the LP. Absolute genius. At this time in 1973 on AM radio they were playing mindless trash by The Eagles and - gag - Layla!!!!!!

When going to a party back then you had to know ahead of time what music would be played; what we now know as 'classic rock' (AM then, garbage now), or good music like this. It wasn't always that easy to know.
