Emmylou Harris - Your Long Journey Lyrics

God's given us years of happiness here
Now we must part
And as the angels come and call for you
The pains of grief tug at my heart

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey

Oh the days will be empty
The nights so long without you my love
And when God calls for you I'm left alone
But we will meet in heaven above

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey

Fond memories I'll keep of happy ways
That on earth we trod
And when I come we will walk hand in hand
As one in Heaven in the family of God

Oh my darling
My darling
My heart breaks as you take your long journey

Emmylou Harris Your Long Journey Comments

The opening line is sometimes LONE journey, recognizing the alone-ness of our passing. LONG journey - the viewpoint of one waiting behind. And the word fits following lyrics better.

The beautiful melody, mournful lyrics, the light drone of the smallpipes AND the incomparable voice of Emmy Lou Harris. It's too good to be true!

I wish this myth would end. Rosalee Watson's copyright is for a song called "Your Long Journey". Although one recording of the song by her husband Doc Watson sounds like he sings "lone" at the beginning of the song, Doc clearly sings "long" in several other places. People who knew Doc and sang and recorded with Doc sing it and publish it as "Long" journey. Please stop.

It is copyrighted to Doc and Rosa Lee under both titles. The first commercial recording by Doc and Rosa Lee listed the title as Your Lone Journey. That said, either title is correct although there are subtle differences in meaning between the two.

The name of the song is Your Lone Journey, which is a significant difference. I'm surprised that EmmyLou is one of them, but many fans and performers make this mistake : in fact someone posted "Long Journey" as the title when they shared a recording of Doc himself singing it - correctly of course cuz he wrote it ;-)

This song is so touching, poignant, and beautiful.
I see this song as the thoughts of a grieving widow,
    all dressed in black,
as she follows the Caisson bearing her husband's casket,
in a sad funeral procession, slowly up  to the cemetery.
In my mind, I can see her tear streaked face, faintly,  through her black mourning veil, as she sadly, but bravely, follows along.
