Emmylou Harris - Telling Me Lies Lyrics

They say a woman's a fool for weeping
A fool to break her own heart
But I can't hold the secret I'm keeping
I'm breaking apart

Can't seem to mind my own business
Whatever I try turns out wrong
I seem like my own false witness
And I can't go on

I cover my ears, I close my eyes
Still hear your voice and it's telling me lies
Telling me lies

You told me you needed my company
And I believed in your flattering ways
You told me you needed me forever
Nearly gave you the rest of my days

Should've seen you for what you are
Should never have come back for more
Should've locked up all my silver
Brought the key right to your door

I cover my ears, I close my eyes
Still hear your voice and it's telling me lies
Telling me lies

You don't know what a chance is
Until you have to seize one
You don't know what a man is
Until you have to please one

Don't put your life in the hands of a man
With a face for every season
Don't waste your time in the arms of a man
Who's no stranger to treason

I cover my ears, I close my eyes
Still hear your voice and it's telling me lies
Telling me lies

Smartness is important in marriage and in a relationship and I’m glad that cyberhackinggenius helped cloned my husband’s phone. I got access to all his dealings both on phone and social media without touching his phone. All I did was share my husband’s phone number with Cyberhackinggenius and I was able to read both his new and deleted messages from my phone without having to touch his phone. My husband was a cheating Narcissist and I’m glad to find out all his secrets and infidelity with the help of cyberhackinggenius. I’m here in UK and able to access my husband’s phone messages with a link on my phone even while he was away in Canada cheating on me. I got to discover that my husband who is legally married to me here in UK is also recently married to another woman in Canada and I’m finally going through a divorce with lots of evidence against him. I read all deleted and recent chats on his Whatsapp, Twitter,Facebook,Instagram messages and Skype. You can contact this great hacker “Gavin” via Gmail  (cyberhackinggenius) or text and speak to him directly on his phone and WhatsApp : +19256795146 and I hope you find peace with your heart after finding the truth.

Three ladies with awesome voices! I'm told they were never in the studio together, they were touring and would record their tracks which were then blended. Who cares?

stuff all your vocal gymnastics singers like whitney -beyonce-mariah-this is a proper singer-can sound harmonic sweet soulful just talking the lyrics-linda is greatest vocalist ever-ever!!

  6. J.... C....

This is the perfect song to listen to on a cold, dreary, and rainy day. When things aren't bad but they aren't great either.

  7. A.... M....

    Heavenly vocals!

  8. S.... M....

Three of the most beautiful voices and souls of all time

For fans of Telling Me Lies -- there's a reason why this doesn't sound like the other country-influenced songs on Trio. It was written by another Linda -- Linda Thompson, and her writing partner Betsy Cook. Linda is English, the former spouse of Richard Thompson, and was a brilliant vocalist on many songs when they performed as Richard and Linda Thompson. Linda and Betsy were nominated for a grammy for the song on Trio, and performed their version on the broadcast that year. Listen to her solo version: she was every bit as good a singer as any of the trio. And like Linda Ronstadt, Linda Thompson lost her ability to sing for a while (in her case, to spasmodic dysphonia), though Thompson has received treatment in recent years and is singing again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCkeBwAaP1M

  10. B.... L....

this whole album is magical. thank you for rekindling such beautiful memories

  11. N.... C....

"telling me lies' is not so nice words but it sounds so beautiful. we don't find these kind of music these days

  12. H.... N....

    🎵🎼🎶👍🥰❤❤❤🎶

  13. S.... m....

    The harmonies are beautiful.

  14. t.... ....

    3:57 -- wow.

  15. A.... N....

This is so perfect. It speaks to me like detailing what im going through now.

  16. J.... G....

Brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear this song. Femininity in its purest form.

  17. J.... L....

    Super TRIO

  18. F.... Z....

    LInda's big note at 3:24 = goosebumps.

  19. E.... B....

I love the song, but it's way way over produced -- glossy 80s sound that is dated. I adore these singers, but the Oh Brother Where Art Thou? ethos would have been far better.

  20. O.... S....

My absolute favorite TRIO tune. Linda on lead is hauntingly sad.

  21. S.... W....

The "Trio" album from which this song comes, is one of the best (all music genes taken into account) of all time. As the old saying goes, "They just don't make 'em that good anymore"...

  22. L.... B....

Linda "belts" it out. Whatever that means

  23. D.... E....

made my son, now 21, inn Denver!! Best Times of my life!!

  24. C.... S....

So so true words about many relationships.

  25. B.... L....

    Love this....just love it

  26. R.... B....

    Beautiful blend.

  27. A.... S....

    Great vocals and wisdom.

  28. M.... G....

    Hillbilly angels!

  29. C.... J....

In an utterly brilliant album this is my absolute favourite song. Poignant lyrics beautifully sung.

  30. J.... J....

Great vocals and great harmony. Classic.

  31. J.... W....

This song is my favorite song of the "Trio". Linda was the superior vocal talent of the three. It's a shame she can no longer perform.

  32. I.... ....

Breaks my heart to know that this beautiful voice has been silenced...Parkinsons is a cruel bastard..

    I.... ....

To be real... not as cold a bastard as Trump. History will judge us.

    I.... ....

I thought I was the only one. Just think about how great these ladies are alone and to put them together and get probably the greatest collaboration of a generation is amazing

  33. C.... R....

    Three great ladies! Gorgeous song.

  34. u.... m....

I have just watched a documentary about these three girls getting together; discovering the wonderful alchemy which was their shared voices. Linda and Emmylou were so modest in their desire to just share in Dolly's Appalachian mountain heritage. I found this song to be the best for me as it completely by-passes that folksy sentimentality that some of the other songs they sang had, but boy could the Trio give any song its due. They never managed a Trio 3 as Linda now cannot sing due to illness. To me her voice is the strongest and most soulful of The Trio. The others are lovely but Linda had a strength and depth of feeling in her voice which to me is sublime.

  35. 7.... ....

These three bring tears to my eyes and an ache in my heart. Their voices singularly and together are incomparable. I pray for Linda whenever I listen.

    7.... ....

    Me too.

  36. u.... m....

This is the best of The Trio - not an ounce of that Appalachian mountain sentimentality - just three very different voices telling it like it is. Linda's is to the fore-front here. My God, that girl could sing. I love all three but Linda is so my favourite: folk, country, rock, Marriachi, opera, big ballad, Motown; the girl could sing the lot and with such modesty.

Dolly is Dolly with her great, distinctive voice, humour, sass and longevity. Emmy Lou has her wonderful history with Gram Parsons and the Hot Band and that ethereal voice but Linda is, to me, one of the best singers ever.

  37. G.... ....

    Goosebumps!

  38. M.... ....

This is still one of my all-time favorites songs. I keep coming back to it to hear the song, to hear these wonderful talents sing, to hear such truthful lyrics. The album may be old, but this song, this version, is eternal.

  39. C.... B....

    Beautiful Dolly.

  40. J.... S....

that last note they sing is so amazing. I could listen to this all day long

  41. m.... g....

Jyette...that's why we have these great artists

  42. J.... N....

My all time favorites, so close to my own experiences. Thank you for putting it into words.

  43. B.... N....

I think ever woman in this world can relate to this song.

    B.... N....

    +Brandy Nix  ......and some men  .....   :-)

    B.... N....

I am not sure. This song has a uniquely female perspective. That line "you don't know what a man is until you have to please one". No man can get that one. Dolly, Linda and Emmy Lou are singing about normal, horrid heart-break. Now we have so much worse.

  44. E.... D....

Makes me so sad that Linda cannot sing anymore due to the ravages of Parkinson's.  Her voice is so pure and lovely!

    E.... D....

+Eve Doster Amen Eve, between her and Artie, it's almost criminal.

    E.... D....

    Breaks my heart!

    E.... D....

It is sad. That voice! How does she cope? I sing in a choir and I love it. Poor Linda has sung all her life and done it wonderfully. I am hearing it now as I type. That is an extraordinary voice; a voice that comes only once in a generation. I really hope it is missed,

    E.... D....

She is stong and her gift is eternal

    E.... D....

@una mckillen Well I happen to sing in a choir too and love it. I Have the same feeling as you about Linda's voice, her dramatic lack of her voice to sing and that her voice is extraordinary. Yes, how does she cope with it? So sad. Thankfully we have her recordings.

  45. g.... d....

    angelic and haunting....Wow

    g.... d....

All three of their voices just go so wonderfully together. This is really beautiful. Haunting is definitely a perfect way to explain it :)

  46. D.... W....

ACC's #90 song of the '87 survey year. The girls hit #3 in Billboard, 8-8-87. God bless you, friend, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!

  47. D.... G....

beautiful, but I still think the original by Linda Thompson is a cut above

    D.... G....

For me both versions are brilliant. Which is the best is academic - as you say, you prefer the Linda Thompson version but other people will prefer this one. There's room for all opinions on music and that's good. There is no 'best' or 'worst'. It all depends on individual taste.

  48. d.... l....

    beautifully haunting

  49. T.... M....

    Cuts to the soul!

    T.... M....

+The Man in the Suit ......and to the bone.

  50. J.... A....

Love these Sweet,Sisters of Music !! I still sing with You..many thanks!!!

  51. D.... W....

Linda has Parkinson's disease. She can't sing, anymore. Emmy's smoked those Egyptian bidi cigarettes. Dolly seems to have the only good singin' voice left!

    D.... W....

Emmy still sounded pretty good at the Linda induction into the R&R Hall of Fame. (And looked rather like Debbie Harry to me! :) )

  52. d.... k....

    SUPER TRIO✌

  53. T.... Y....

Best track on the album. I have it on vinyl !!!

    T.... Y....

I agree. And I have it on vinyl too.

  54. d.... ....

Attention Ms. Cyrus and all your ilk - this is called singing. Please go away until you can do this.

    d.... ....

Miss Miley Cyrus was Singing great Country with Dolly! Don't judge her without knowing! OK, know Miley's a dirty bitch!

    d.... ....

It's about having class and respect for the art. She has neither. These 3 ladies have had both for their entire lives.

    d.... ....

+Verystrangers Try having a little respect for other ppl opinions. It's one thing to disagree ... but your acting like it's an insult to say these singers are above today's (Miley) generation. Their are 2 problems with todays music artist - the american idol factor - and their fans - who want to glorify them 5 years into their careers. Linda Ronstadt has one the best voices of all-time (along with Ella, Barbra the young Aretha & Donna). Dolly and Emmy are completely respected country artist of yesterday. But today's generation act like singing started with WH (that is from watching these singing competitions). This is 1986, no studio tricks, just flat out singing and harmonizing.

    d.... ....

dgrichmondbc we all share our gifts with the world in our own way. Namaste

  55. e.... s....

Love this track. Love these ladies.

  56. j.... w....

It is almost 2014. For some reason I Have been hearing this song for a couple of days- So I decided to listen to the real thing. Love those women- love the harmonies- love the song.

  57. m.... g....

Just how many of usare actually feeling this. I'm bettin' "the farm"!!!! :-)

  58. M.... P....

    too sweet.

  59. C.... M....

Both beautiful and powerful. A tour de force for three grand ladies.

  60. D.... N....

I love the whole CD, but this is my fav of all! :)

  61. s.... ....

my favorite song from this album! thanks for uploading....my cassette finally died and i just told you how old i am hahah

  62. M.... W....

Anyone who somehow doesn't have this album after all these years......Don't you think it's time to get a copy of it??? BRILLIANT from start to finish!!!!!!!!

  63. M.... ....

They took Linda Thompson's song and brought it to a whole new level.

  64. P.... M....

I love this album and this cut especially! I learned how to play & sing it the first time I heard it. Still perform this song from time-to-time when my daughter is up to the soprano parts. :) Peace & Love!

  65. u.... m....

This is such a lovely song and sung so wonderfully by these three amazing voices with Linda at the forefront here. I think it is the most powerful song on this album. It is not really country, not really folk, not really pop just an amalgam of the lot. They sang this a while ago - covering my ears and eyes because you are telling me lies resonates more now in every context.

  66. D.... M....

The best lyrics ever written for a woman who has been told lies.... I cover my ears, I close my eyes... and I still cry when I hear this song.

  67. C.... L....

thanks so much!! i've been searching for this song so long :) my dad got me into listening to Trio (weird how he and I love the same music) :)

  68. x.... ....

    Stunning song.

  69. P.... R....

Linda Ronstadt is the most incredible female vocalist ever, her voice is pure magic

    P.... R....

    Paul R agree

    P.... R....

I agree and she was so modest with it. You think she must have known her power, both in that amazing voice and in how she looked but she always deferred. These 3 females are the best ever.

  70. F.... ....

When these women get together, magic. The power, precision, passion, and control of the music, their voices is remarkable. This song is a beauty.

  71. S.... B....

What a beautiful song! Haven't heard this in years. Thank you so much for posting it.

  72. h.... ....

Always loved this song so much. I know this man, unfortunately, unintentonally,
    this man is me.

  73. a.... ....

    Happy Birthday, Linda!!

  74. a.... ....

Man, this is incredible...thanks for posting!

  75. A.... W....

I still have the tape I played in my funky old car (over and over!) lol

  76. D.... W....

ACC's #90 song of '87. God bless you, Ron, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!

  77. T.... L....

    Fabulous....

  78. n.... ....

I agree with scoot58. Most powerful song and most insightful message. Beautiful.

  79. H.... ....

    Beautiful.

  80. t.... ....

    my favorite!

  81. s.... ....

Don't know if it's the best, but I think it's the most powerful song in an incredible album.

  82. t.... ....

    oh how i love this!!!
