Emmylou Harris - Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight Lyrics

Mary took to running with a travelin' man
Left her momma crying with her head in her hands
Such a sad case, so broken hearted
She say momma, I got to go, I gotta get outta here
I gotta get out of town; I'm tired of hanging around
I gotta roll on between the ditches

It's just an ordinary story 'bout the way things go
Round and around nobody knows, but the highway
Goes on forever, that 'ol highway rolls on forever
Lord she never would've done it if she hadn't got drunk

If she hadn't started running with a travelin man

If she hadn't started taking those crazy changes
She say daughter, let me tell you 'bout the travelin kind
Everywhere he's goin' such a very short time
He'll be long gone before you know it, he'll be long
Gone before you know it
She say never have I known it when it felt so good
Never have I knew it when I knew I could
Never have I done it when it looked so right
Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight

This is down in the swampland, anything goes
It's alligator bait and the bars don't close
It's the real thing down in Louisiana

Did you ever see a cajun when he really got mad
When he really got trouble like a daughter gone bad
It gets real hot down in Louisiana

The stranger better move it or he's gonna get killed
He's gonna have to get it or a shotgun will
It ain't no time for lengthy speeches
There ain't no time for lengthy speeches
She say never have I know it when it felt so good
Never have I knew it when I knew I could
Never have I done it when it looked so right
Leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight
It's just an ordinary story 'bout the way things go
Round and around nobody knows, but the highway goes on forever
There ain't no way to stop the water

Beautiful treatment of the classic Rodney Crowell song. Love the skips and noise in the background...I miss that in today's ultra-polished music world.

All of my friends in the 70's were into rock (guitar) bands & thought I was crazy when I started buying Emmy Lou Harris albums. She just bowled me over!!
Had the great pleasure of seeing her & the "Hot Band" in the seventies at a very intimate venue-Maybe 300 people-I was about 10-15 feet away from the stage!!!
    .

    R.... H....

Same here. Now most of them also love the country music of Seventies.

    R.... H....

My story exactly, right down to the small venue seated 10-15 feet away! She was so hot! Wasn't in Ft. Collins, CO, was it? The Lincoln Center?

    R.... H....

Was lucky enough to have a cool older Sis who played Emmylou as well as The Eagle,Poco...would hear it from her room.... Wasn't for her I might be listening to Ted Nugent right now...

  57. s.... ....

I think Rodney wrote this by himself. this is a great "swampy" version. My favorite version is by Rodney on his Acoustic Trio Live album. Do you have that, Ron? it's only available on his website.

    s.... ....

No Skip I do not have that one.

    s.... ....

    @pecvillian
You shold get it, Ron. iit's my favorite Rodney album. He was touring behind "Sex and Gasoline" so there some are songs from that, but also some of his hits. The other 2 players are great: Jenny Scheinman on violin and Will Kimbrough on guitar.

    s.... ....

    @skipwaytube
I'll have to check that out Skip. Thanks
