Emmylou Harris - Jambalaya Lyrics

Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have good fun on the bayou

Jambalaya, a-crawfish pie and a fillet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.

Thibideaux, Fountaineaux, the place is buzzin'
Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen
Dress in style, go hog wild, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.

Jambalaya, a-crawfish pie and a fillet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my machez amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

    Love her doing any song!!❤️🎶🎶🎶🎸

  2. ad 9000

Indeed Ken Burns' doc brought me here as well. An artist and band on fire, for sure. I had to check out James Burton's solo again - so incredibly fluid and tasteful. It should be required viewing for anyone into hybrid picking, One correction to an earlier comment, it's Hank DeVito on pedal steel, not Danny Pendleton.

  3. diinn river

    Love & love

  4. Maria Esteves

    Canta lindo!

  5. John Gallagher

Enough to make this atheist believe in angels with voices.

  6. Matt Thompson

    Emmylou havin fun.

  7. Nicholas Taitz

James Burton is OK, but Emmylou had a major upgrade when she got Albert Lee. He's so much cleaner and crisper than Burton.

    David Smith

Jimmy Burton and Emmy Lou were both "Fallen Angels" as members of Gram Parson's backup band. Jimmy practically invented Rock and Roll lead guitar playing as a member of Ricky Nelson's band, and showed the first generation of guitar players how it was done on Ricky's parent's TV show every Sunday night. Albert Lee is a bit more linear than James, but both are coming from the same source - Chet Atkin's CAGED system, played at warp speed - with a lifetime of experience on top. I'm a bit surprised to hear ANYone say anything bad about Burton, who is still amazing crowds at the NAMM shows around the country, each year.

    Kursebi

@David Smith James Burton (along with other Presley guys) was Pasons studio musucian. The Fallen Angels were Parson's road band. It was assembled cause Presley musicians were too expensive for touring. So Burton never was a part of Fallen Angels.

  8. MANUMAN ERIC

    Nah Hank was better

  9. christian bensimon

Who's the men behind Emmylou with the emmons pedal steel guitar ? Is it maybe hank de Vito or someone else ....?

    Dalton Hyde

I'm pretty sure your right. She introduces him in the live clip of "Tulsa Queen"

    Kursebi

    Yes, that's him.

  10. Matt Thompson

I love this, but nothing can top the version of this song with Gram.

Emmylou getting down. Love it. That's my girl.

I live in Nashville and a few years ago was standing next to her at an event for dogs (she's very big into rescue) She smiled at me and was petting my dog. I just stood there gawking and couldn't think of anything to say. I've been kicking myself ever since.

  13. Johnny Cache

The Red Fox inn in Bethesda, Maryland brought ME here! #residency

  14. Darrell Cooling

Without a doubt the absolute best version of Jambalaya, . ever.

I guess this was just after Gram Parsons era, Hardin and Burton both on solo Gram with Emmylou. She is a force on her own!

The music of Emmylou and James Burton brought me here. Was watching and listening to James Burton back when he was lead guitarist for Ricky Nelson, long before he hooked up with Elvis.

Thumbs up if emmylou harris’ music brought you to ken burns.

One of the best bands ever ....

  22. David Hudson

It is really hard to believe Emmylou doing Hank.  I usually do not like to see anyone mess with Hanks music but now and then someone can take one of his songs and do a good job with it.  Emmylou does a decent job with this one.  With James Burton on guitar I am not surprised.  That makes a huge difference.  She did well with the great ones song.

    David Smith

This is kind of a take on Webb Pierce's version of the song. The whole music world was aware of Hank, Sr and many singers of his time covered his songs and had pop hits with them. I think that Jo Stafford did a version of this, but this more rocking version was made famous by Webb Pierce(he's the guy who had a guitar shaped swimming pool made at his house); I first heard this version on an album by CCR's John Fogarty called "The Blue Ridge Rangers." But this version has been around since before 1960.

And I kinda agree with you about Hank's music; but Hank(and later on, Merle Haggard) learned from Bob Wills about having a great backing band(in fact, after the death of Hank, Sr, his steel guitar player went to work with Bob Wills). The band will keep the audience happy by playing danceable music. And a crowd that gets to do their "tribal mating dance" will buy more drinks. And they'll fight less and leave happy - which night-club owners just LOVE.

You will hardly ever see a country performer without a formidable back-up band; and they can ALL rock out. If you ever wonder what happened to Southern Rock, well, the players didn't go away - they adapted. And, along with the music of Hank, Sr, and the Eagles, you will still hear those songs played to this day.

I'm lovin it! Music to my ears and I can't stop listening to this song and the "Red Dirt Girl" from Birmingham, Alabama, Emmylou! I guarantee that Gram Parsons is smiling, along with other giants including Waylon, George, Johnny and June. These were people that helped Emmylou get into the Country Western scene in the mid - late 1970's. Now that same Red Dirt Girl from Alabama is being honored by many young Country Swing listeners as they are enjoying, learning, experiencing from the old timey country and western artists. This new generation of what I call "Hollywood Country"music are the phase today, but let us all remember that others paved the road for them by paying their dues thru Juke Joints to opening for Elvis. Emmylou took Hank Williams' "Jambalaya" into my generation via local fairs, beer joints and AM radio. Every True Country Music Fan needs to hear this one song that captures the very essence of real country music, worldwide!!! "Many Thanks" to Hank, Emmylou, James Burton - Rodney Crowell- Glen D. Hardin and others!!!!

I wonder if Emmylou has ever taught vocal classes. There are right and wrong ways to sing which affect how long you'll have a strong voice, and when you think of the number of shows per year over how many years that Emmylou has been singing, and she still has a great voice. I'm guessing that effortless quality she has is part of it. James Taylor once said he was on a road that would've eventually taken away his voice, but his backup singers—who were formally trained—helped him relearn his approach to singing which gave him more of a future. That was in the mid-90's, so it must've worked. :)
