I certainly agree, Keith, but I can suggest another angelic voice, that of Alison Krause.

I totally agree with your comments. The instrumental break is a master stroke in my opinion which works to set this apart from the original - apart from the oh so beautiful singing and vocal harmonies. So good!!!

Was listening to this song on the terry wogan tribute programme yesterday on bbc 2. Had not listened to this song in a long time. After listening to it, I cannot get this song out of my head. It is a beautiful song and the lyrics plus the tune of this, is very haunting and emotional. A timeless classic.

It's a fine version, but The Beatles performed the song better than anyone else.

The beatles created this masterpiece in the 60's and is untouchable. It is much easier to cover than create.

You dont understand just how right your comment is. Anyone can cover a song with practice but to write a love song like this is astonishingly difficult. Love songs are the most difficult to pull off because there are so many ways to make them sound sentimental and drippy. Just look to todays pop music to find that.

Almost without exception, I think it is sacreligious and pointless when anyone remakes a Beatles original.  Almost.  Except for Emmylou's rendition of this song.  As another commenter opined:  "She owns this."

Make an exception for Joe Cocker's "A Little Help From My Friends".

Remakes of classics period....other notable exceptions are Hall and Oates "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" and Britney spears "I love Rock and Roll" (That last one is a joke.... I'm just kidding... she murdered Joan Jett's classic.)

Actually, there's a LOT of effective covers of Beatles songs...sometimes more effective than the original versions. No insult to the Beatles...in the case of covers that outdid their versions, they provided the foundation in the first place.

What a wonderful voice. This has got to be the finest song she ever did. Both her voice and the instrumentals are outstanding. I've been listening to her since the mid 70's and love her style more every time I hear that angel voice. What a wonderful gift she has to share with the world.

I salute Paul McCartney for writing such a haunting song. Most of all I am in awe of Emmylou- surely this is the definitive version of this beautiful song. She is truly an earth bound angel.

A colleague was listening to Beatles' version and I remembered this song. At the time, I didn't know it belong to them but imo, her version is far, far better. Even more nostalgic after knowing so many bitter endings from people that it was going to love each other forever. :(
