Emmylou Harris - After The Gold Rush Lyrics

Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming
Saying something about a queen
There were peasants singing and drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree

There was a fanfare blowing to the sun
That was floating on the breeze
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the Twentieth Century
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the Twentieth Century

I was lying in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eye
I was hoping for replacement
When the sun burst through the sky

There was a band playing in my head
And I felt like I could cry
I was thinking about what a friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie
Thinking about what a friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie

I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun
There was children crying and colors flying
All around the chosen ones

All in a dream, all in a dream, the loading had begun
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home

Emmylou Harris After The Gold Rush Comments
  1. S.... G....

Right from the start of her career, Emmylou has sung duets and larger groupings. Her passion for singing with others is so evident. So much talent; so little ego.

Here's to great art and these three great artists!

    transcendent.

Very nice but don't change the original lyrics, we all need to get high at times.

  6. J.... P....

This is what you hear when entering the gates of Heaven.

  7. e.... ....

Wonderful harmony. Linda singing the falsetto was remarkable. It is not always easy to maintain since it is out of normal vocal range. Great music by three great ladies.

  8. t.... l....

wow! an old glass harmonica @ 2:51

When I heard the Prelude version so long, long ago, I thought it WAS Dolly Parton singing.

    Funny how things come around.

WOW! Beautiful rendition! Linda unusually sings the high notes on this one - limitless talent. The Parkinson's diagnosis is a dagger in my heart and those that grew up with her on the radio, when we bought her music on albums and cassettes. At least we will always have a permanent record of the true talent and genius that is Linda Ronstadt. Kudos to Dolly and Emmylou - unequivocal in their own rite. The magic of your harmony is everything!

elbeejay, Ashamed to say that this past spring, I did not look carefully enough through my old record collection, when I cleaned out my family home of almost 60 years because Linda was in there. Although, there is no silver lining to a diagnosis of Parkinson's for this golden woman, she IS still alive with a fertile mind and curiosity and children and friends and legions of admirers of her body of work that will stand the test of time. We have listened to her all these many decades, and now I hope she is listening to us and truly absorbing our expressions of deep and abiding gratitude for giving us everything she had to give-she left no musical stone unturned.
Did you see the documentary of her playing now in theaters? Aside from treating yourself, let her see the box office take of a film that chronicles her musical journey. I am reading her musical memoir now, and she is opening my eyes to new songs and songwriters and musicians; she is like a musical preservationist (as is YouTube! ).
In a recent interview, she said she is not afraid of dying, but of suffering. I pray this woman who gave us countless songs from countless genres to help us navigate the emotions we experienced through all the phases of our lives, will be spared much of that. She deserves all the comfort and blessings her music gave to the world.

In the 70’s when all the other young teenage girls were listening to Janis Ian, Carole King, etc I heard a Linda on the radio and was blown away. I saved my babysitting money and bought my first ever album, “Heart Like a Wheel”. My favorite song, “Darkside of the Street”. Her voice capable of the most difficult phrasing, sterling, effortless power, and heartache. If she had ever let loose with all her power it would have blown the speakers. She is singing the high notes here because she could. She was the best vocalist of my generation. As for Trio, we are blessed beyond belief that fate drew these three women together. One of the few Rollingstone Magazine reviews I’ve ever agreed with stated “this must be the way the angels sound”. Amen.

    e.... ....

Thank you, Bonnie for relating that sweet memory. Amazing how a human voice can speak to what's embedded in our souls, especially when we're teenagers trying to figure it all out...or 62 and still trying to figure it all out.

    e.... ....

@Bonnie Chandler Linda could sing the phonebook, and make it sound like heaven.

  15. D.... H....

    Three legends right there.

  16. G.... R....

That would have been a great cover but they had to change a word. Actually it was two words. Like these women never got HIGH.

    G.... R....

Dolly asked Neil Young if she could change that lyric. He told her yes. Read that story online somewhere.

  17. c.... ....

what was that instrument being played ?

    c.... ....

An harmonica invented by Ben Franklin I think used water on lead crystal

    c.... ....

@MIKE VALUSKA what a sound it makes..thanks for that.

  18. S.... R....

hows about the glass harp invented by B. Franklyn

    S.... R....

The Glass Armonica invented by Ben Franklin?

    S.... R....

    that's the one

  19. R.... d....

Only Neil Young sounds right singing this song

    R.... d....

That's correct, if you are going to change the lyrics then don't SING it.

  20. T.... ....

Dolly sounds better when you shut your eyes just listen and don't watch her "performing" the song.

    T.... ....

    spoken like a non-singer.

  21. L.... S....

I am crying for many reasons, one and foremost being I am seeing and hearing 3 goddesses bring beauty, love and hope to all of us, even one as forlorn as me.

  22. G.... B....

just been checking out that incredible instrument, the glass harmonica, somewhere in the deep folds of my mind I`ve come across it somewhere, never knew they existed before, so its amazing to see one for the first time. It does sound very other worldly.

  23. B.... M....

Just incredible. Emmylou and Linda don't try to dominate but weave their voices perfectly with Dolly's. I'm brought to tears everytime I hear Linda now knowing that she can't sing any longer with her Parkinson's diagnosis.

  24. D.... G....

The things you find on YouTube.

  25. B.... C....

When an artist is truly gifted this is what they sound like live. They were meant to sing with each other.

  29. H.... S....

A brilliant cover, what greater praise can be there be?

  30. A.... O....

Best part of this is that 3 megastars are close friends first and do music second.

  31. C.... B....

girls what talent Amazing made to sing together

  32. r.... ....

Three queens of music, all in perfect harmony! Love them all. TY

Just listen to that note at the 40 second mark-"breeze". SO pretty.

  34. t.... s....

I never listened to Linda Ronstadt again after she turned her back on rock music.

  35. B.... K....

All I can say is, " Thank you💞"

  36. J.... C....

I was awakened by this song very early Sunday morning, for some reason I had never heard this version before. Crying? No that wasn't me!!

    J.... C....

Jim Cook onions, my friend. Damn onions

  37. S.... 1....

This is absolutely amazing. Made me cry.

Love Niel Youngs song, but the great harmonies by these three classy ladies is simply outstanding. Such a shame that we will never hear music like this ever again.

  47. M.... V....

Waarschijnlijk het beste wat de drie dames ooit ten gehore hebben gebracht, werkelijk hemels van klank en kwaliteit! met dank aan Neil Young!

  48. b.... b....

simply crap, don't know why YouTube out this on my wall but give me Neil Young everytime! Country sucks balls!

  55. J.... M....

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful! Neil Young has got to be proud and honored at this cover, no, treatment of his song, albeit with a few words changed for airplay, but the context remaining. Stunning rendition of this simple song. An excellent example of non-ego collaborative vocalizing. The Ladies done doodle da job over da top!

What a beautiful version of a poignant Neil Young song! It's a shame that Linda no longer is able to sing publicly. We will sorely miss her talent.

  64. J.... ....

Linda is a master harmonizer. she knows how to blend her voice around the lead (dolly) and still differentiate herself from Emmylou.Beautiful work

    J.... ....

@ErickMN you're welcome. I've been a loyal fan of hers since i was a kid in the 70s. But I particularly love her Trio work.

    J.... ....

I get really sad about her not being able to sing anymore. How do you deal with that? Should we just be grateful for all the decades of great music? @Josue2018

    J.... ....

@ErickMN that's why I love youtube. I'm stuck in the 70s and 80s watching all the videos/footage of my fave artists like Linda.

    J.... ....

Linda was classically trained by operatic voice teachers so yes, she would be good at this. And she is fabulous. Actually all three of them are, even though individually they have. very different timbres to their voices. The mark of a true artist is the abillity to perform effectively in ensemble.

    J.... ....

Linda sang uncredited backups even after she became a superstar. To me she leaves Steisand in the rear view mirror.

  65. L.... H....

    What a trio

  66. B.... M....

They changed the words from 'felt like getting high' to 'felt like I could cry'

  72. i.... ....

    That blows me away, everytime.

  73. S.... W....

I actually remember where I was when I first heard this song by The Trio. It has stayed with me ever since. I called my late son David right away and he confirmed that it was a Neil Young song. He loved Neil Young.

  74. O.... R....

Good version, except he felt like getting high, not cry.

    O.... R....

That's probably done to make it more decent.

    O.... R....

No, it was changed to 'felt like I could fly', which is better than 'cry'.

    O.... R....

And wasn't the original lyric, "in the 1970's"? Maybe we should keep that one so we can remember it's been almost 50 years now and what have we done for the planet?

  75. m.... ....

    Perfection!!!!

  76. M.... C....

Many thanks for sharing this, it was lovely. So sad that Linda can no longer sing due to Parkinson's, but kudos to her for knowing when to bow out gracefully. Always leave 'em wanting more.

  77. J.... C....

  89. P.... M....

i believe its called a theramin

    P.... M....

No, although the strange ethereal sound it produces is rather theremin-like. It's a glass armonica, works the same way as a wine glass, not electronic at all, whereas a theremin uses an electronic oscillator circuit that is tuned by the operator waving their hands near it. See the Wikipedia entries for glass harmonica and theremin.

I think it's like - you know when you rub your wet finger on the edge of a glass? It's like different size glasses rotating in a cone shape and the guy can "play" them.
