I love this song so much. Her pitched down voice is like a yin to Bon Iver's yang. Working on an edit that samples this track heavily.

There is a problem with doing this of course (down-pitching). You can't do it live and in concert. There is a precedent. In the 1970's there was a singer named Andy Kim with a hit "Rock Me Gently". They sped it up to make him sound younger and he couldn't do it in concert. It was a career limiter. I became an Emma Louise fan because of the purity of her flawless natural voice that sent shivers up and down my spine. There were no discordant harmonics in it. This is an expressive song, but your have taken out the X factor dimensions that come with natural frequency by slowing it down. There is too much pseudo reverb which is unnatural. (Obviously just my opinion).

Very brave and idealistic concept. I love what this song is trying to convey to the listeners.

In her words: “I didn’t have a male counterpart to balance myself,” she explains. “I filled in the male and became the masculine. I had no feminine mothering and softness, and I was very harsh on myself.” This album concept was created during what she calls "a masculine phase" in her life, she didn't use to wear "feminine" clothes, colors or makeup, her tone and notes don't go out of a man's range and the lyrics are harsh. That's why she said she needed to use another voice, because that wasn't truly who she was.

In Emma's words, she has a different voice because she was a different person. The pitch shift doesn't change the fact that it's hauntingly beautiful the way she sings, a woman lost in masculinity trying to find herself again, that's why it wouldn't make sense for her to use her real voice, it would be a lie.

The change of the voice pitch is very experimental. How I hear it is very new and unique which is very interesting. I appreciate her for doing this.

That is because it is a man. Transgender. You can see the big jaw and the brow ridge. The ears are low. Big skull.

The shaved down brow bones, huge jaw, big shoulders, long arms aren't concepts. Those are male features. They are pitching the voice lower because the hormones are probably failing this one and they need to cover for a deepening voice. I've looked at earlier videos and the voice pitch isn't radically different.

I understand her want to go in a new direction, but as someone who has loved her voice for YEARS, I'm not really into this. Kudos to her for doing it though. It's a bold move and I will always support her. That being said, I'm gonna have fun chucking this into my computer and pitching it up so we can both have what we want! :)

IH: Yes, it does. But I found that listening to the album as originally released was, to be blunt, unlistenable. Joseph's voice just sounds _wrong_ to me. A gimmick. Emma is the artist, she has every right to record and release songs as she sees fit. I am in no way arguing with that. But as a listener, I have the freedom to listen to music as I prefer...or not listen at all. For me, the truth is that the 'pitch-adjusted' versions feature the voice I loved when I began listening to her. I'm a happy camper now. (P.S. The album should have been released in the form that Imogen Heap has with hers; same songs, different takes. For Imogen, the second version featured only the instrumentals. For Emma, it would have meant releasing the Joseph and Josephless versions.)

I was taken aback when I first listened because I expected her original voice, but it brings about a different emotional viewpoint. It's kinda melancholic which just makes sense for her lyrics. To me, it sounds like a very deep voiced woman. It doesn't even sound like a dude. Although, it totally could be at the same time. If you want her pretty, normal voice then I don't think you listen as a true fan. It's sorta like lust...if you understand what I mean. Would you rather she not release anything at all? She'll have future albums with a normal voice. Must suck not being able to handle change well. But to each their own.

umm....@Maria ....her voice is entirely effected by sound fx...this isn't a "tone" she is doing. it is a vocal effect. Just because someone prefers her natural voice (personally I think these songs would sound amazing in her natural voice without modulation) doesn't mean they are attacking her. Take a chill pill.
