Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Endless Enigma Part One Lyrics

Why do you stare
Do you think that I care?
You've been misled
By the thoughts in your head

Your words waste and decay
Nothing you say
Reaches my ears anyway
You never spoke a word of truth

Why do you think
I believe what you said
Few of your words
Ever enter my head

I'm tired of hypocrite freaks
With tongues in their cheeks
Turning their eyes as they speak
They make me sick and tired

Are you confused
To the point in your mind
Though you're blind
Can't you see you're wrong
Won't you refuse
To be used
Even though you may know
I can see you're wrong
Please, please, please open their eyes
Please, please, please don't give me lies

I ruled all of the earth
Witnessed my birth
Cried at the sight of a man
And still I don't know who I am

Are you confused
To the point in your mind
Though you're blind
Can't you see you're wrong
Won't you refuse
To be used
Even though you may know
I can see you're wrong
Please, please, please open their eyes
Please, please, please don't give me lies

I've seen paupers as kings
Puppets on strings
Dance for the children who stare
You must have seen them everywhere

Great human beings, great artists, great musicians will never die! Death, even taking them out of existence, does not have the power to erase their works, and their presences will remain forever! Generations will leave this world, the ages will rise and disappear in this world and like all the great works of the great beings who leave their marks in this life the powerful voice of Grega Lake and the wonderful harmonies and insriveissolos of Keith Emerson's keyboards and piano will still resonate forever ...

Of course, these albums were immediately recorded onto my brand new Maxell blank tapes for road travel &
listened to on my Sony Walkman. THOSE were the days.

In High School, I thought my Theater Arts / Prana Dancer Teacher had lost her mind when she indroduced this song to us in the Dance Class in 1972 or 73! She taught us a dance to this music! After all these years, I still enjoy listening to it, I learned to appreciate this type of Music. Ms. Sharon Long, if you are out there & you happen to see this, Thank You.........Jasmine, Prana Dancer

Back in 1972, my dad had just joined the "Columbia Records Club".  Remember those? ... record album subscription clubs that sent you records by mail?  It was always part of the deal that you got some freebies upon signing.  In this case, Dad got 5 of them.  He knew how much my sister and I were getting into music at the time, so he let each of us pick one of the freebies for ourselves.  My sister was 9, and I was 12.I remember paging through the catalog painstakingly.  I wanted to make the best of this rare opportunity.  I probably only had about 3 lps at the time, as buying them was a major investment for me, being the cash strapped kid that I was.  A freebie was a big deal.  I found myself continuing to fixate on the Emerson, Lake and Palmer "Trilogy" album.  I was drawn to the mysterious cover art, and I had also been fascinated by the song "Lucky Man" that I had heard on the radio several times recently.  Finally I told my dad that this was my choice.I'll never forget the first time I set the needle to side one of "Trilogy".  I was absolutely transfixed by what came of out of the speakers when the first track "The Endless Enigma Part 1" unfolded.  I had never heard ANYTHING like this before!  Incredibly creative, dynamic, powerful music with introspective lyrics that hit me like a train.Looking back now, I realize this was the true dawning of my love affair with progressive music.  It's still going strong, and will to the end of my days.  R.I.P. Keith.  Thank you for embracing your passion and working hard to make stunning music like this.  You and Greg and Carl have enriched so many lives.

    D.... C....

    @mushroomking11 we all do lol

    D.... C....

Thank you for sharing. I, too, was profoundly moved by this 8 track, as I discovered it.

    D.... C....

Ya know. Thank goodness for "Colombia Record Club" it was thru them that "Fragile" by Yes entered my consciousness and prog rock took root in my soul. ELP came along later as I was obsessed with keyboards due to the work of Rick Wakeman and I discovered and highly appreciated the work of Mr. Emerson. Thank you Mr. Emerson, Mr. Lake, RIP. Mr. Palmer, thank you as well. There has never been a more inspirational genre of music than that prog rock generation that I was so lucky to grow up in. Thank you all.

    D.... C....

Beautiful story, seriously. It never ceases to amazes me how powerful the music is. How attached to our emotion and memories.

    D.... C....

Back in the early 1970's I used to belong to Columbia Record Club too! I remember looking thru their paper catalogues for different records to order. I bought a lot of great music from that club.

  54. l.... ....

This was one of first albums I bought, and it's still on my top 5 of all time. First Bowie now Keith - where will it end? Oh I know....

  63. C.... L....

    The best from ELP

  64. J.... S....

Trilogy is my favorite ELP album. It was mixed well enough to hear the drums all the way through except for parts of the song Trilogy where the synth starts to overpower. Parts of it are challenging to anyone trying to cover it, but for the most part it's good quality, fun music. Their most challenging work though is not on this album, but instead is on Brain Salad Surgery where Karn Evil 9 gets REALLY hard for anyone to try to cover it. 1st Impression is fantastic drumming and 2nd Impression is fantastic keyboard work. And then if you want to add in live music, the song Tarkus off of "Welcome Back My ....." really pushed these 3 musicians to their max, and I haven't seen ANYONE cover it and get close to the quality that ELP did. That tour after Brain Salad Surgery was amazing, and don't confuse that tour with their performance on CA Jam 1974, because it's different. That tour was better than CA Jam, and if you haven't listened to Tarkus off that live album you are really missing out on what I feel falls into the category of the "Greatest Music Ever Recorded" I'm not saying it is absolutely the best music ever recorded, but it fits easily into that realm, along with a handful of other recordings done by others bands.

    J.... S....

Seriously, bud ?  Did you read that off of Wikipedia or something? I suppose you think Layla is Clapton's best song and Aerosmith really rocked out with Dream On?  The obscure songs are the great ones, not the one's everybody has heard 1000x on classic rock FM. You just sound like a tryhard.

    J.... S....

What's your problem dude, wife split from you? I lived the 70s dude and what I said is from MY experience with music and enjoying listening to music I like.

Why don't you grab a keyboard and try playing along to Keith or a drum set and play along to Carl to Brain Salad Surgery.

Or better yet here's a good list for Keyboards, and tell me where you find it, NOT.

Endless Enigma, Trilogy, Rodeo, Karn Evil 9 2nd Impression, Barbarian, off the live album Improvisations, Tarkus.

That's a short list but those are some of my favorites that I listen to on a somewhat regular basis. Tell me the time signature for the beginning of Tarkus. Oh wait, you'll have to look it up on Wiki.

I didn't say anything about about any other band, but if I did it would be probably be Rush, and a good song is Tom Sawyer, but I kind of prefer AFTK even though it's a bit obscure, but the sounds on that album developed what would be a bit of Hemispheres, their next album, and of course the song "La VIlla Stangiato". I'm also a big fan of their song "Something for Nothing" I really like the lyrics of AFTK though the most. I think you'd fit in well with them.

Oh, and I forget the year, but Aerosmith did a tour with a new band in the mid 70s. That band was Kansas, and the music of Kansas and their level of musicianship blew Aerosmith away, who because they tended to be drunk while performing would make noticeable mistakes.

STUPID ASS TAKE YOUR CRAP ELSEWHERE, BLOWHARD! Piss off now.

Hey post one of those songs I listed above when you get through one on either the drums or keyboard.

    J.... S....

also, go find ANY source of the info that I posted other than MY post. Good luck with that one ASS.

    J.... S....

@James Smith Tell me about Hanson. "Give a Little" is a good one. Not their biggest hit, but you should know it. I bet you are bummed that they grew up.

    J.... S....

Thanks for that, James. I was in the US Navy in '72. ELP was one band I never got to see and always regretted, since I loved their work. I will make a point to try to find those live performances you mentioned. And ignore that ASS, the douche. I liked your comment greatly.

  65. F.... M....

Great song! But, the words are wrong in the second stanza. It's: I'm tired of hypocrite freaks with tongues in their cheeks...

  66. C.... ....

This song makes me pick up my microphone and start singing along! So much memories are developing from this awesome hyper-band! True musicians who feel and know their instruments like their own souls! Perfect! Brilliant!!!

I love this song, even though when I went to see ELP there was a guy right behind me yelling Endless Enigma!!! for three quarters of an hour, until they finally played it. I never enjoyed that song so much in my life.

It's ELP, it's supposed to be pretentious,

  91. c.... ....

thanks man that actually makes sense :-)

  92. S.... C....

Any lyrics could be fit to a completely different view from the author's, so it's pointless to "explain" or "translate" them. Having said that, when I heard this I can't help thinking about politicians, executives, and so called rulers of the world. Sadly, I found myself repeating "Don't give me lies" too many times when I watch the news, "words that hardly enters my head anyway"

  93. F.... ....

  97. c.... ....

can anyone help me to understand the lyrics? what is this song about? also the part 2? how it is related to the title of the song?

  98. K.... W....

I listen to this LP almost every night.
