Elvis Presley - I Want To Be Free Lyrics

There's no joy in my heart,
only sorrow
And I'm sad
as a man can be
I sit alone in the darkness
of my lonely room
And this room
is a prison to me

I look at window
and what to I see
I see a bird
way up in the tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree

What good are my eyes,
they can't see you
And my arms,
they can't hold so tight
I have two lips
that are yearning,
but they're no good to me
Cause I know I can't kiss you tonight

I look at window
and what to I see
I see a bird
way up in the tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree
I want to be free
like the bird in the tree

Elvis was a pioneer - so many firsts - the first to sell 1 million records in advance (Love Me Tender), the first major singing star to do movies, the first to do "unplugged" (68 comeback special), the first to do a concert via satellite, the first to put Las Vegas on the map etc etc. What an amazing perfomer who inspired so many different singers and groups that came after him...

Love this song, love Elvis. Back in the day, we girls went "bonkers" whenever a new Elvis song came out, DJs usually playing the new song right after every station-break for News or whatever. Today, hearing this Elvis I Want To Be Free song has me wondering how we lost the freedom we had back in the day. We had privacy, freedom of speech, and none of this politically correct nonsense. Thanks to Youtube, we still have Elvis. I love this "Free" song, the word itself reminding me of the "good old days." . .

    Charming and unforgettable King***

  29. B.... V....

Just maybe the technology to mix was better in the 1970's. But I truly love the raw voice talent of the 50's & 60's before the Coronal made him a movie clown.

  30. M.... C....

Elvis odio a los mexicanos porque nunca pudo superarlos esta cancion la interpretaron mejor los Teen Tops claro un Grupo Rocanrolero muy mexicano

    M.... C....

MTG Contratistas .elvis jamas supo de los teen tops

  31. L.... G....

I was typing out the words to this song instead of the lesson I was told to type out. This was back in highschool in 1958,
and the the teacher, a middle-aged redhead, asked me what I was doing. I told her it was a poem. She smiled and walked away.

  32. g.... c....

    awesome singer rip elvis

  56. N.... a....

elvis presley the original the emancipator the bad ass!

  57. t.... p....

To say he wasn't the complete package because he didn't write his songs is nonsense-he was a singer not a songwriter just like so many others including Frank Ella Dean etc How many songwriters can sing their own songs well?

    t.... p....

+tim preston Let's see....Lennon and McCartney, Jagger and Richards, Dylan, Neil Young, CSN, Michael Jackson, the Beach Boys (back in Elvis' days), Willie Nelson, and lots of other country people I cannot name that were writing and recording not far from where Elvis lived.... At that time, there were lots of rock and roll groups, and people like Smokey Robinson. Neil Diamond became huge with hits like Sweet Caroline, that he wrote himself. Billy Joel was starting out. And even better, Jackson Browne, the Eagles (Don Henley's voice and writing are exceptional). Joni Mitchell wrote song after song and sang beautifully... Believe me, it was a big deal with people in the business--money-wise, you got to keep it all, and creating-wise, you were not dependent on others to get a song or album out, and to perform the songs forever after. Elvis had the best voice--few would disagree. If he could have written too, he'd have been free of limits and earned huge amounts above what he did. BTW, Frank, Ella, Dean were an older generation. Elvis was rock and roll. And rockers created their music. That had to bug him sometimes.

    t.... p....

People like you listen to the word of the music and intellectualize it rather than feel the soul of the music. To you Little Richard and Pat Boone sang he same song. The words may have been the same but it was not the same song! And it is sad that you can not appreciate the soul of a song to understand that. As far as the importance of Elvis goes I will take the opinion of the great song writers over your opinion any day: Lennon-"before Elvis there was nothing" and "nothing ever affected me until Elvis"; McCartney-"I doubt very much if The Beatles would happen if it was not for Elvis" (and go youtube the video of him swooning over the "Elvis" bass) ; Jagger-"No-one, but no-one, is his equal or ever will be..."; Dylan "The highlight of my career? That's easy, Elvis recording one of my songs" (When he visited Sun Studios he kissed the spot on the floor where Elvis recorded his first song); Paul Simon "It was a bit dramatic but how the hell am I supposed to compete with that?" (referring to Elvis' version of Bridge over troubled water); Springsteen "Elvis is my religion"; Little Richard "Elvis was God-given, there is no other explanation. A Messiah comes around every few thousand years, and Elvis was it this time." ........

  58. S.... ....

This song really makes me cry! It is about my life

  59. R.... m....

    elvis...enorme

  60. s.... h....

Elvis Presley gave so much of his self to the public

  61. g.... ....

    I love sweater Elvis.

  62. A.... T....

How his voice matured over the years.I don't think he reached his full potential until the late 60's.That and his enormous drive and talent, and of course THOSE looks.

    A.... T....

it's not about perfection but uniqueness...none of his songs from 1960 on give me goosebumps like the young and raw elvis.

    A.... T....

ProFishingGuys have you never heard it's now or never??

    A.... T....

le plus grand chanteur de tous les temp

    A.... T....

cyninbend Elvis had depth, full talent, heart and soul, deep soul. He wasn't just a performer. He contributed artistically and musically to songs.
It is great to write your own songs, but not always necessary. Also, clearly no-one has what Elvis clearly had.....in abundance.
There will never be anyone like him.

    A.... T....

Ann Thompson is Elvis hello live cuz if his book amazing if he's not then pray for him that he can come back

  63. A.... B....

älskar den låten, och är han sååå vacker <3

  66. G.... E....

I have yet to hear another artist reach different notes/octaves so closely the way Elvis could.  He's amazing and will never be matched.  Never.

    G.... E....

I'm gonna assume you don't listen to many other singers, Elvis was great, but definitely not any better than all the other greats of their time.

  67. k.... k....

  69. S.... R....

    WONDERFUL... THANKS.

  70. C.... S....

JAARNO88 had said that Elvis was 'underperforming' in the film version of this song. Yes as he is acting the prisoner Vince Everett. In this version we hear Elvis being Elvis and get a chance to compare an 'ordinary' version with a great version.

The King is alive and well in his music. Such a loss. Goes to show all the money, fame, and fortune and he was still lonely and sad. A country kids rising from poverty to too much to fast. OMG I still miss Elvis so much. Long live the King of Rock N Roll!

  80. m.... o....

glen, no truer words were ever spoken...the most important figure in popular music !!!

  83. G.... Q....

The greatest popular artist that America has ever seen! An enduring symbol of humanity.

  84. j.... m....

debe de estar en un disco de 1957, pues es parte de la banda sonora de la película Jail house rock!!!

  85. P.... R....

    The Best !

  86. L.... ....

I hate these ridiculous ads on all the videos!!!!!!

  87. W.... S....

Mah boy, Mah boy! Didn't he just have it all? Right down to ''the most envied head of male hair on Earth. If you've seen Jailhouse Rock or King Creole, you know he had great promise as an actor. If some of the latter movies were more ''vehicle'' than art, it doesn't change the fact he was the highest paid actor of his era, as befits The King. I've always loved the gospel stylings Elvis and the Jordonaires brought to this song. He had it all and made the world a better place. Long Live The King!

  88. c.... ....

    awesome video, greats pictures

  89. R.... V....

WHAT record??? I'm looking at his complete discography right now and it's NOT here!!

    R.... V....

"Love Me" never came out on a single/45.  It was released on an EP - an extended play 45 RPM record - with three other songs:  "Paralyzed," "Rip It Up," and "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again."  Because of the sales of that EP, and the requests radio stations received for "Love Me," the song cracked the Top Ten.  The proper name of that EP is "Elvis Volume One, EPA-992."

  90. m.... ....

I'm writing that sheet music now

  91. M.... F....

its the super Rock n roll Elvis the one in the white jumpsuit

  92. O.... ....

    It ain't Justin Beiber !!!!!!!!!!!

  93. C.... C....

greatest ever singer to ever walk the planet.

  94. s.... ....

    Excellent! Thanks.

  95. 1.... ....

actually it was 3 days, so i've heard :)

  96. p.... ....

his female co-star Judy Tyler (dark hair) died 3 weeks after shooting the film Jail House Rock....so Elvis refused to see the film.

  97. K.... S....

People that think this isn't Elvis, obviously don't listen to his music.

  98. v.... D....

Elvis, "follow Me" You'll be free....Elvis followed august 16,1977, now Elvis free-er than a bird in a tree.. He followed Jesus The Christ ,I hope..but boy! that Elvis , more profound in his simplicity than all the genius's with all their complexities..Elvis still king of the rocking heap after leaving this realm 35 years ago....It is now 2012.
