Elvis Costello - The Sweetest Punch Lyrics

You only saw red
After I said, "How can we continue?"
Hidden from your view
In the blue corner that I painted myself into
Then we started to fight
And it changed everything
Here's the ring

You dropped the band, I can't understand it
Not after all we've been through
Words start to fly, my glass jaw and I
Will find one to walk right into

You knocked me out
It was the sweetest punch
The bell goes...

I can hear it ringing, but I didn't see it coming
We all say things we don't mean
You can't take it back

Now the room is spinning, but was I the last to notice?
I can see I'll never win
So if you're going
Then you better go to him
Then you better go to him

I only saw stars
I dropped my guard, and that's how it ended
What was I to do
In the blue corner where I seemed to hang suspended?

Then with seconds to go
You delivered the blow
Here I go

You dropped the band, I can't understand it
Not after all we've been through
Words start to fly, my glass jaw and I
Will find one to walk right into

You knocked me out
It was the sweetest punch
The bell goes...

I can hear it ringing, but I didn't see it coming
We all say things we don't mean
You can't take it back

Now the room is spinning, but was I the last to notice?
I can see I'll never win
So if you're going
Then you better go to him
Then you better go to him

Costello is a Renaissance man when it comes to music, but i think Jazz is where he really excels. This album, along with My Flame Burns Blue is my favorite of all time

@elena2426 sorry but... so what that you are black? no offence intended by any means, but i don't live in USA and i don't know what black people were supposed to be listening to in the 60s/70s.
    Thank you!

I am a black woman who heard these two guys one day on television. The sound of Elvis's voi ce combined with Burt's piano just blew my mind. I thought I was back in the 60's or 70's. I listened to the whole show and immediately went out to buy the cd as well as the video of the televised concert. "Painted From Memory is a most beautiful collection of songs and one that even my children even treasure.

    elena2426 Amazing music!

elena2426 ... je blijkt een lieve vrouw, er is nood aan zulke mensen.
Je kent me niet, je verstaat denkelijk mijn taal niet maar dat geeft niet, muziek zegt genoeg.

we all say things we don't mean...genius lyric

    @themax316

I'm in the Uk too. London in fact. So you are a singer. Great. Have you listened to Causteau by chance. The singer Liam has a voice like Scott Walker. Check out (Damn) These Hungry Times and let me know what you think mate.

@SiriosIX That is bizarre in a good way. I'm glad you got it back. I always sing those songs to warm up my voice. I wish I could form a band in my city in the UK that would want to do music like this but alas...This album defines how melancholy can be beautiful, and subtle

    @themax316

This is unbelievable! The day after I got your message, an ex-girlfriend contacted me to say she had found my Painted From Memory CD. I GET IT BACK NEXT WEEK. SHE'S HAD IT FOR TWO YEARS, OR MORE. It looks like I'll be listening to it a lot on my own too. Take care. Stay in touch.

  24. t.... ....

@SiriosIX one of my favourite albums too...i listen to it alone alot

  25. P.... ....

    horrible voice ruining Bacharach's music

    P.... ....

    Fuck off

    P.... ....

This is also Costello's music. And Bacharach wanted him to sing

  26. S.... ....

This comes from one of my favourite albums of all time. Bacharach and Costello make such a magnificent team. I love this album.

  27. M.... M....

I just love his voice and the music!!

  28. s.... i....

Punch can mean a boxer's hit, a mixed alcohol drink, a joke ending...

  29. h.... ....

I just love Elvis's theatrical voice. He is an icon.

  30. M.... L....

    "so if you're going,
then you better go to him...
    you better go to him!"

one of the few times music happened -
    the sweetest punch indeed
