Elvis Costello - My Funny Valentine Lyrics

My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable
But you're my favourite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
Don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's day

    💯♥️🎶🎶🎵

I've heard the song on 2 programmes: the Vicar of Dibley, and the Simpsons. Imagine how perfect life would be for a girl with Alice's beauty, and Lisa Simpson's brains; although the reverse (Lisa's beauty & Alice's brains) would be catastrophic!

  3. R.... R....

A wonderful interpretation of that classic!

Costello did the entire song by himself: the arrangement, the production, and the performance, it's just him. He recorded it at a small demo studio in the outskirts of London somewhere, I think it was Pathway Studio. He was in a pub drinking and heard the song playing on the bartender's transistor radio and so he took a taxi to the studio and emerged into the cool morning air with this performance on a reel of tape (probably 1/4"). Who does that nowadays???

Wow. That's epic. Love that you shared this. Thanks. My all time favourite song and all time favourite version.

It was Eden Studio. Sorry to bust the romance but it was in the afternoon stone cold sober. A beautiful session that I cherish to this day.l

@Aldo Bocca Wow. Given the artists you've worked with, it must have been something really special!

I hadn't heard this song in about 30 years when I had it on single as the b-side to Oliver's Army. It just popped into my memory today and I played it over and over in my mind from start to finish. I remembered every nuance of the song perfectly. I decided to look for it on YouTube when I got the chance and wow, it is exactly as I remembered in detail. This song and version is memorable for sure.

My husband to-be intro'd me to Elvis circa 1980's......albeit far removed from my Disco Era !... Exposed me to a plethora of journeys of Elvis. In addition we took every live show when Elvis visited Boston. To celebrate our wedding, "My Funny Valentine" was "our" song. Hendrix also made an 'appearance'

  23. T.... M....

    Class. What a distinctive voice

  24. J.... D....

Always reminds me of the Vicar of Dibly.

  25. K.... M....

I was just going to put something on the same lines, but I couldn't remember what it was the b side to. This one was played over and over, just left the arm off the record player. God showing my age now. Such a great voice I love this one

  26. b.... ....

Just wonderful. Still got the seven inch somewhere.

  27. B.... w....

I think this is my favourite version

  28. R.... M....

@snicky58 Adele's voice shivers me timbers! What soul for such a young woman. There is good and bad out there like any other time in history. I cringe at some of what my boys like but my first album was 'If Wishes Were Horses' by Sweeney Todd. Nothing to gloat over there!

  29. s.... ....

@rudimamaify :-D I think you did, too! (These youngsters today and their "music.") ;-) You were a great sport to take your kid to the LMFAO show! (I have a daughter who's almost 13, and seriously, I have to admit that I actually like a lot of the music I hear on "her" radio station, especially Adele and Foster the People.)

  30. R.... M....

@snicky58 It was! Squeeze opened which was fun for me at 14 but they didn't compare. I took my 11-year old to LMFAO last week for his first big concert. I think I did WAY better ;)

  31. s.... ....

@rudimamaify What a great first concert!
