Elton John - Writing Lyrics

Is there anything left
Maybe steak and eggs
Waking up to washing up
Making up your bed
Lazy days my razor blade
Could use a better edge

It's enough to make you laugh
Relax in a nice cool bath
Inspiration for navigation
Of our new found craft
I know you and you know me
It's always half and half

And we were oh oh, so you know
Not the kind to dawdle
Will the things we wrote today
Sound as good tomorrow
We will still be writing
In approaching years
Stifling yawns on Sundays
As the weekends disappear

We could stretch our legs if we'd half a mind
But don't disturb us if you hear us trying
To instigate the structure of another line or two
Cause writing's lighting up
And I like life enough to see it through

Elton John Writing Comments
  1. M.... P....

He is fresh here this is his passion

  2. D.... M....

Elton will never sound this young again God bless

  3. j.... g....

definitely a "deep track". davey johnstone's acoustic guitar work is incredibly difficult but always musical. his solo is, arguably, one of the greatest acoustic guitar solos in all of rock & roll music.

  4. G.... V....

love me some Elton John and Bernie Taupin...since 1971...

  5. V.... ....

This song says it all about Elton and Bernie?

  6. q.... ....

who is the guitarist doing the solo? Is it Caleb Quaye?

  7. B.... S....

It sounds even better on the album, coming near the end, just before the grand finale of the last two songs.

  8. f.... ....

A song of Elton and writer Bernie Taupin working together.

  9. M.... I....

    WOW FAB

  10. K.... W....

He had the voice then......hasnt had tho since 1999 but still plays a mean pinball

  11. T.... ....

“Will the things we wrote today sound as good tomorrow?”

YES. In fact, they sound even better today: like a fine wine, these songs get better with age. These guys are in a class by themselves like Lennon/McCartney. Thank you Elton and Bernie!

  12. K.... W....

I forgot just how good this album is.

  13. j.... ....

This song reminds me of my sister. I remember when she bought this album and we listened to it together. She was 19. I was 11.
    I lost her today.😪
I love you Maura. My heart is broken. I will never be the same again.

    j.... ....

I'm sorry for your loss. May she be listening in heaven.

    j.... ....

    @John Davis ❤️

  14. F.... P....

    The percussion work also rocks.

  15. K.... S....

Anyone who has ever tried to write a song understands this song.

  16. M.... M....

When my dog passed away last month I was listening to this song and I was listening to it a couple of weeks before she passed the connection now that I have. And I always had a connection with Elton John his birthday is the same day as mine March 25th what a beautiful song Beautiful album one of my favorite singers God bless Elton John

  17. F.... ....

To me this is Elton's best ever album, followed by Blue Moves

    F.... ....

Fyodor48 followed by Goodby Yellow Brick Road..I’m sorry

  18. J.... B....

The synergistic brilliance that was Bernie and Elton. My favorite song to play when I get up in the morning to have that "feel good" feeling to set the tone for the day.

  19. R.... S....

15 people who wouldn't know good music if they fell over it

    R.... S....

Actualy, it's up to 21 people who have poor taste in music. This song is amazing...

  20. 3.... ....

    Inspiration for Wilco's Impossible Germany?

  21. s.... ....

Underrated song. It's aged very well.

    s.... ....

"Will the songs we wrote today sound as good tomorrow?..."

    s.... ....

introspective? "they don't write songs like this anymore"? this song is an incredible "interaction" of considered composition, flawless performance by a group of consummate musicians and "all the trimmings" of studio production. it is nothing less than a masterpiece.

  22. k.... ....

This song feels like life . . . person-to-person the way it should be.

  23. T.... H....

music today is total shump !!

  24. S.... A....

    ARRETADO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. S.... ....

One of those tracks, where I'm sure Elton felt completely vindicated choosing Davey to join the band all those years ago...

    S.... ....

right on dude, Davey Johnstone rocks

  26. l.... ....

I remember they used to play this on FM all the time. It's a song meant for FM.

    l.... ....

Yes, but in Los Angeles it got good FM airplay - but in 1980, five years after the song was released.

  27. L.... ....

Ah, pure, unadulterated joy. That guitar solo - precious.

    L.... ....

Oh so true. I've always thought the guitar solo is perfect.

    L.... ....

Sounds like Knopfler, but I know it isn't.

  28. n.... ....

This is just great. Love the shift into the "And we were oh oh, so you know"...

Pinky is also brilliant, but that's Caribou... :)

  29. J.... N....

    Great Album!!!!!!!

  30. C.... E....

Yeah, really what's NOT to like about this song!

  31. D.... Z....

..my childhood was about to go off the rails in quite a dramatic way, it feels and sounds strange to listen to the songs by Elton from the heart.

  32. Z.... P....

I'm tempted to, like many on this "thread", call this his finest album. However, Madman Across the Water, Tumbleweed Connection and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are pretty flippin good. Heck throw in Don't Shoot Me too. :)

    Z.... P....

I don't care much for Madman as a whole album. The filler is quite forgettable IMO.

  33. J.... C....

I love this song. What's to *not* like about this song? :)

    J.... C....

I know right? This album changed my life in 5th grade. :)

    J.... C....

@demonhoopa I didn't discover this album until years later, when I was well into my 20s, and I bought the cd, but I loved it. :)

    J.... C....

@Jason Carpp What a treat though! I love finding old hidden treasures I didn't know about so it's like new. I discovered Sweet in the 80's and played the heck out of them like they were brand new. My guitar teacher bought me Captain Fantastic in Oct 75 for my 11th birthday. I was skeptical because I thought Elton was a weirdo with all the costumes and the glasses. The album obviously had amazing cover art and opened up with pictures of Elton, Bernie and the band inside. There were also two booklets, one with the lyrics printed and another with pictures and a comic about how Elton and Bernie met. The song "Better off Dead" hooked me first and I became a fan for life. It's weird I remember all that nearly 40 years later. It was that impactful a moment I guess.

    J.... C....

@demonhoopa I didn't start listening to Elton John until after high school, when I was in my 20s. My favourite songs from Captain Fantastic are *Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy*, *Bitter Fingers*, *Tell Me When the Whistle Blows*, *Someone Saved My Life Tonight (Sugar Bear)*, *Writing* and *We All Fall In Love sometimes/Curtains*.

    J.... C....

@Jason Carpp I can't argue with any of those! I also love Meal Ticket and Tower of Bable. Oh...that's probably all of them now huh? :P

  34. R.... H....

My son was born the year this came out.I went home to shower and i played Captain Fantistic non stop and as loud as i could on my stereo the day he was born.
Writing was my favorte then and Elton has never let us down with hs music..

  35. N.... O....

The first Album I ever owned ........ wore out the record, and bought another one, and got the CD.   And of all the songs I could never get tired of, this might top the list

    N.... O....

Same here....first I ever bought.....and STILL have it, with all the bits it came with!

  36. t.... ....

Wy does Elton and Bernie consistently put down the "old" songs -- saying they were overproduced? I think they were great, and the new stuff musically is a little simplistic.

    t.... ....

IMHO, there is much to be said for the "production values" of the 1970's and 1980's. there was lot of "difficult shit" contained therein. funny, my 35 year old son-in-law, who is an accomplished musician, always remarks that these arrangements are very difficult to copy. enough said...

  37. B.... D....

All his albums had one great song after another. What a genius. I love all his work along with Bernie and the Band, Nigel, Dee (RIP) Davey, Ray and all the others, Nobody will ever be able to replace his work. I'v e seen him 32 times and waiting to see him again, November 12, 2013 at the Boston Garden. Can't wait!! Pure Bliss...

  38. d.... ....

to instigate the structure of another line or two...

  39. V.... F....

    what a great fucking album

    V.... F....

Vinicius Fiocco one if not the album he ever made😎😘

  40. V.... F....

    what a great fucking album

  41. b.... m....

    just terrific then now always

  42. T.... C....

You can almost call this album, Elton's Greatest Hits.

  43. D.... L....

I LOVE sir ELTON JOHN the music of the 60s 70s 80s are gone but not forgotton at my club the CRUSH BAR!!!!! [email protected] and i will ad you to my club all the best music from 3 decades of LOVE PEACE and MEMORIES of the 60s 70s 80s

  44. M.... ....

for Jememy Clarkson (top gear] fans: hide in your shell is his favourite songs

  45. F.... ....

I love CFATBDC. My second favorite album behind GBYBR. They are similar in the sense that the songs are all unique with little to no overlap. And the characters brought forth by Taupin's genius is second to none.

  46. t.... ....

Great album, but I like Crime of the Century even better...

  47. t.... ....

Yes, I agree. But too me writing is a little more fun and upbeat, while Quietest is very reflective.

  48. a.... ....

I always thought this song should have been a duet. Maybe with Kee Kee Dee or someone else.

  49. T.... ....

WTF has happened to this nation?! Doesn't anyone CARE?!!!!!

  50. E.... K....

I put this concept in my Honors Thesis "British Progressive Rock & Roll: Post 1967" in my senior year at college: 1978

  51. E.... K....

Every now & again a tune or an artist will stand out in today's 2012 and I see this as from very sparse pickings. Many will bring up a one-hit-wonder now in many ways where America stood on the precipice of the British Invasion & the Beatles, not creating anything much to talk about in popular composition as well as performance than Vic Damone, Perry Como & Mitch Miller...

  52. q.... ....

this song reminds me "Don't stop me now" a lot!! and it was made 3 years before!

  54. N.... F....

I'M FROM BRAZIL I LOVE ELTON JOHN

  55. j.... ....

I could not agree more. Today's music just will not have the "staying power" of the older music from several years ago.

  56. j.... m....

The best album he ever did.

  57. B.... D....

Brings me waaaay back. Those days will always be a big part of who I am. So amazing what music can do. Just like I heard it yesterday when I was 13!

  58. m.... ....

Not just Elton's best album (pipping Tumbleweed Connection and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), but my favourite album of all time.

  59. J.... F....

GREAT LINES ABOUT EJ AND BERNIES STRUGGLES
    DURING THE EARLY YEARS.
    CLASS SONG.!!!!

  60. E.... R....

    exelente!!!

  61. V.... R....

loved this album cover back in the day the music was the best nothing but trash these days

  62. t.... ....

I love the sound of the "lighthearted" guitar.

Supertramp would be one of my top five also, but I think I'd pick "Crime of the Century" instead.

Maybe instead of that line Elton should have sang "Will the things we write today...
Sound as good as those yesterday?"

  63. w.... ....

This is such a lovely song - reminds me of waking up on a Saturday morning with a day to do anything.

  64. f.... a....

And I like life enough, to see it through.

  65. R.... ....

Elton e Bernie Taupin come Roby Facchinetti e Valerio Negrini.Writing esalta l'unione artistica oltre che umana, e al di là del motivo gradevole le parole insistono sulla necessità viscerale dello scrivere insieme canzoni. Chi non conosce l'Inglese si perde milioni di canzoni che sono autentici capolavori.

  66. m.... ....

..."will the things we wrote today.......sound as good tomorrow?"
How prophetic a question is that? Nothing could sound better!!

..."will we still be writing....in approaching years?"
How blessed have we all been?

  67. m.... ....

@jocksmen Yes i had it once!

  68. J.... F....

@mizofan just imagine you can take
only 5 albums if you were stranded
    on a desert island.........
    BREAKFAST IN AMERICA Supertramp
another good one but NOT everyones choice.

  69. J.... F....

    @mizofan try
songs in the key of life Stevie Wonder
    another double album

  70. m.... ....

@jocksmen I agree that GYBR is one of the 5 best albums ever; the others in my top 5 would be Capt Fantastic, Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen), The Art of Amalia (Amalia Rodrigues) and Le Pas du Chat Noir (Anouar Brahem). Tumbleweed and The Union would be in my top 10.

  71. J.... F....

    @mizofan YOUR PRETTY CLOSE BUT G Y B R
WOULD BE ONE OF THE TOP 5 ALBUMS EVER.
    YOU AGREE.?
    UK/USABOY.

  72. E.... R....

    exelente!!!!!

  73. m.... ....

I love this album, i think it just pips even Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Tumbleweed Connection as my favourite by Elton. And now we have another excellent album in The Union (5 stars in Rolling Stone, all reviews i've read so far very positive)

  74. j.... ....

    Ah..yes!..perfect!.

  75. 1.... ....

    this song never gets old!!!!!

  76. H.... W....

Best record by Sir Elton, and maybe ever :o

  77. m.... ....

The Greatest Melody Writer Ever In Popular Music

  78. R.... ....

Come si compone musica e versi col cuore senza ipocrisie o insabbiati nelle regole del business..Un Lp che tutti dovrebbero avere, specialmente coloro i quali fanno musica.

  79. K.... ....

    @americangalbasseyfan
    I play AIR Drums...LOL

  80. R.... H....

i first heard this when i about 14 - and i knew that it was a celebration of male friendship (a gay man and a straight man)...it was obvious that they loved each other - no shagging, though, but this is an album about falling in love.

  81. K.... K....

    And Gus Dudgeon!!

  82. B.... ....

@curtisrunstedler Elton John and Freddie Mercury are the two Best Artist ive ever seen, and ive seen them all. Talent we will probably never see again :(

  83. K.... R....

comparing eltons music with eltons music is silly ... APPLES N ORANGES

  84. M.... B....

"Will the things we wrote today sound as good tomorrow?" ~Yeah, I think so.

  85. w.... ....

Love this album, Toss up though as far as his best. Love Goodbye Yellow Road too. But I am partial to this one.

  86. c.... ....

Wonderful music...Elton John's vocals remind me of Freddie Mercury on much of it :D

  87. g.... ....

A masterpiece of an album. Dude, no one realizes the impact of Elton, Nigel, Dee and Davey. Oh yea, don't forget about some guy named Bernie.

  88. m.... ....

How can you not sing along with this song?

  89. b.... ....

thank you thank you- best album EVER

  90. E.... S....

I like this track...it has a hint of song that would come later....it puts me to mind of Little Jeannie in places

  91. w.... ....

Have always loved this album, and every song on it could have had radio play. It's his best one, to me, even better than Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,

  92. R.... H....
