Elton John - Where To Now St. Peter? Lyrics
I took myself a blue canoe
And I floated like a leaf
Dazzling, dancing
Half enchanted
In my Merlin sleep
Crazy was the feeling
Restless were my eyes
Insane they took the paddles
My arms they paralyzed
So where to now St. Peter
If it's true I'm in your hands
I may not be a Christian
But I've done all one man can
I understand I'm on the road
So where to now St. Peter
Show me which road I'm on
Which road I'm on
It took a sweet young foreign gun
This lazy life is short
Something for nothing always ending
With a bad report
Dirty was the daybreak
Sudden was the change
In such a silent place as this
Beyond the rifle range
I took myself a blue canoe

Elton John Where To Now St. Peter? Comments
Bernie's fascination with the old American South, and West, produced some of the finest themes ever. Grateful!
Wow, this song always brings me back to my college days. Wish I could go back in time. Love this entire album.
It's a drug
Certainly one of his best!
Guitar with a Leslie speaker... Priceless.
I thought a blue canoe referred to drugs...
Alliteration. The oooo sound in blue canoe is a poetic device. It sounds purty, in other words...
love elton
I heard this for the first time today for like 30 seconds and now I’m hooked. I like it. I like it a lot.
Been an Elton John fan since I was 13 years old...Just turned 60...(lordy its hard for me to say that!)...Still have all my Elton John albums From His very first, on up through Rock of the Westies...Of course I have no turn table to play them on, and have them all on cd's now, but all the years I've moved about the country, & have lost tons of albums over the years, I have NEVER lost any of my Elton John Albums...all of which are still in mint condition...These old jams.....nothing like them! Totally awesome singer, & let's of course not forget about Bernie Taupin.....Awesome team! 12/22/19 Peace & Love
Il country rock con venature bluesy per dimostrare il genio compositivo immenso di sir Elton...bellissimo
fell in love with this song in 1972 so many memories
Best song elton ever wrote brings me back to the day everytime...
In my opinion this is Elton and Bernie's best work. It seems to come straight from their hearts. I liked Elton's second album, but when I heard Tumbleweed I became a real fan.
My funeral song
Heartbreaking song
great tune
His best album
What a work of art. To bad most people do not have the ability to appreciate great music.
Tumbleweed Connection is my favorite album of his.
This song, and the whole tumbleweed album takes me back to 1991,the year I left school and because an Apprentice Plumber. The first job was with a young one man band Plumber in Romford, Russell Green. He was a real comical chap, very much the duck and Diver. We'd work in london and travel up there in an old battered Escort van crammed with the materials and tools for the day ahead,if sometimes Russell had a lot of work another plumber would come too and Id be in the back of the van amoungst the tools. A bit frightening sometimes when Russel would hit a speed bump too fast.....and the tools would fly up past the level of yer ear oles!!!!. Russ see himself as a bit of a racing driver and would race around the "Sights" of London with his windows down, music blearing and a cigarette between his lips.
His music passion was Elton John, and he played the tapes over and over, Tumbleweed, Yellow brick road, Captin fantasic all day long.Hed tell me about the concerts he'd been too of Eltons, and what happened after.......Russel was his biggest fan the world over.
I was a big fan of Elton John’s early stuff in the ‘70s. Still have this album!
I love you for playing this for your Mom! You are lovely! Peace my friend!
Elton's best album by far. Classic!
Great song! It is just great! Reminds me of my acid days
Apple Watch series 5 ad???????
Soooo goooooddd!
Back a week later. Still Soooo goooooood!!!
I thank my brother for playing this in our shared bedroom when I was 10. IMHO it stands the test of time in 2019. Love you brother for expanding my musical horizons.
Played this album virtually every night in first year Engineering in '75. No money for bars or movies but felt content to listen to this masterpiece. Always thought this was his best work. Now my kids appreciate it as well.
ALL good.

Such a beautiful song! This was before Elton John sold out. He & Bernie Taupin were a great musical team.
Just wonderful. Before he became the popster.

nice explanation...
Just dropping in.Awesome as always.
Are you dropping in to see what condition your condition is in?
My first EJ album back when I was 15. Love this song and album.
This is beautiful! So simple and understated...
I think the music is pretty sophisticated myself. Kind of reminds me in parts of Joni Mitchell of that period--early '70s.
Entonacao judaica nesse belissimo exemplar de musica folk & western.
No one has ever done it better than elton an bernie
109 cretins gave this song a thumbs down!!!!
Just visited Gettysburg. The info. you added makes it all the more clear. Elton John album and some of this clearly speak to the Civil War. our one & only. Thanks for the insight about Civil War references. Well done !
Taupin's lyrics are what touched me so. But Elton's music made it complete brought it to life.Their early work is where I turn to, long after I heard them released, at the time. I fear the biopic will focus on his glitter, and lose his early work. We'll see.
Tumbleweed Connection: a perfect album from Bernie and Elton. Thanks for posting.
The road to hell, you filthy heretic. I love this song the most from this album.
Thanks, for posting, I love the song! The song comes with a beautiful rhythm
Dazzeling dancing half enchanted....love it
Definitely one of my "to-a-desert-island-albums". It never fades.
I personally don't like his songs but this is my exception
Great tune from their best days...
1970 great year ,for lots of things
My Favorite Elton John Song.
This song is absolutely flawless.
What a wonderful voice put to such wonderful music.
if ever a song had a haunting, addictive melody, it's this one ...
Awesome early Elton. Genius.
Lost my mom a couple of weeks ago. Hope this was the last thing she ask! Keeler
I sure am glad that Bernie answered the ad.
wonderful song ... a lost masterpiece
Amoreena, too.
Love the old Elton. My favorite from "Tumbleweed".
My favorite Elton John song
It took me 48 years to discover this gem!! Can't believe it!
Welcome to the very best of Elton. There will never be an album like this again.
Creativity can't be bought it just comes from the ether. This is the era before the money and fame changed him forever.
Sergio Mendes did a great rocked up version of this song on his 1976 album "Home Cooking". Go check it out! This is a very deep and thoughtful song about a dying soldier, and a question that we all ask of ourselves when it's our turn to leave this planet.
Anos de ouro , que saudades
My favorite song from this Tumbleweed. His voice is in fine form here.
In the early '70s, I was in a small venue in Pittsburgh, listening as the road crew set up for either Deep Purple or Small Faces. We blew a joint right there in the seats as we watched and waited. They played this song as a sound check, and I was utterly...totally...blown...away!!! Never heard it before, and will never forget that experience. Such were the miraculous days of my teen-aged youth... ; ^ )
Stupefying music .....what a song !!
Gold 😆
in my humble opinion best song he did
Elton and Bernie hit a creative streak on this album. Beautiful and poignant
Elton's songs were all so much better before we found out he was gay....
Love the drums on this track -awesome
His best work.
His best album
This song was released in my senior year (70-71), and it has always been special... no... beyond special. It touches my soul. Which road am I on? I've done my best, but it's out of my hands. I attended my wife's 45th HS reunion last weekend, and this song came on. I just stood off to the side... re-living the brief life of the young man in the song and my own life. When a song or painting or book can transport you to that special place... you are blessed, indeed.
For the boomers in my age niche... if we could come together with some jug wine and play songs like this from our youth, we could set aside the acrimony so prevalent in the news, today. We can make each other better and maybe, just maybe... we won't have to ask St. Peter which road we're on. We'll know.
Ray, my brother. We are the same age and though not in the same location, we are aligned in spirit. To you and those like us who really believed the world would be so much better by now, I raise my wine glass and pray against the death of hope. And listen to the inspiring songs of our youth...
David... thanks so much. August will come to a close in about 30 minutes in my time zone; it has been a rough month. However, things have kinda rebounded this week, and your encouraging words are a big part of that change. Keep praying.
Bernie and Elton -the most wonderful match -
ha - 4 years later I was just about to write very same I wrote below!!!!! STILL love it!!!! Great song - great times....
Is that ever good, and cool
Elton John and Bernie Taupin were truly the "Dynamic Duo" of songwriting back in the day. And the band that backed Elton. Wow!
Most youth of today haven't a clue.
My grandsons do...
TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION my first Elton John album. One of his best.
By far, Tumbleweed Connection is their best album ever!
The bass on this song is amazing.
My remember having listened to this beautful and sung it too. Beautiful. greetings from Lima, Perú.
This is Dee Murrays finest work . OMG, The bass is just gorgeous.
The day my father passed i called his best friend, I didn't know this but my dad's friend was in a terrible car accident, he flew through the windshield and hit the street head first, his skull had cracked open and half his brain was in his head and the other half on the street. he was rushed to the hospital but he died in the ambulance. the call went out to his wife and daughter and they went to the emergency room and begged and pleaded him to come back and he did after being clinically dead for 20 minutes. After many surgeries and a lot of physical therapy he is almost back to normal.
He told me not to despair because my father is in a better place. My fathers friend told me the story of flying in a pod through space and time, he had the feeling that he was traveling to meet a great benevolent presence and that he was at peace and all was well. Then he said he heard the cries of his wife and daughter and her was back in his body again.
Perhaps there is something after we she'd this vessel we are in and that we aren't just born to end up as worm food.
Be At Peace Owen Stanley 4/27/1943 - 1/1/2018
One of my favorite songs by E.J.
Such a great album. I love older Elton albums when he wrote with Bernie Taupin
I was a freshman in college when this song came out. Had no idea that it was about such a weighty subject. And smack in the middle of the Vietnam war, no less. I listened to it for the melody and rhythm, and it is my favorite Elton song. I'm 18 every time I listen to it...
This would be one of Elton/Bernie's best no matter what, but some of the "strange" aspects is what puts it over the top. The distorted (backwards?) guitar, and that kinda creepy long, fading background vocals (I think it's vocals anyway)... well, this thing is something else. Hard to describe the mood I go into when listening to this... I just wish it was an hour long.
I had this album when it came out. This was his best in my opinion. Stellar
Can’t beat the funk of those early ej albums...
This album, and madman across the water, they will never beat. Saw him ten years ago with a hundred piece orchestra, and a hundred piece choir, they played all of this early stuff, the sound was incredible.
At his best with Taupin
It doesn’t get any better than this. What a wonderful album!
My favorite Elton John song!
Early 70's Elton and Bernie... The best stuff...
This song is probably my favorate Elton song. I think this came out 1970, Really good stuff
This is a gay song for he fell in love with Bernie
