Elton John - The Wide-Eyed And Laughing Lyrics

Are you still in control of the boat that you row
Or do you still cling to me when its sinking
I never condemned you, I only consoled you
When candlelight made me a King

For the wide-eyed and laughing
Passed like a season
Erasing a passion to sin
For no one knew better than the tealeaves and the tarots
That the wide-eyed and laughing
Were just one step ahead of the wind

And the hearts that you played on the porch swing for me
Was a song that I'd heard in the past
For I had an audience somewhere inside you
That applauded whenever you laughed

Gone is a word that I now rarely use
Though sometime in the course of a day
I go racing back like a man possessed
By the wide-eyed and laughing daughters of some different age

Elton John The Wide-Eyed And Laughing Comments
  1. A.... ....

Blue Moves was certainly an improvement over Rock of the Westies but still seemed under par in contrast to the run of albums up to Captain Fantastic. However it has aged well. For the most part a solid piece of work; some stuff seems like filler to round out a double album. It seems convincingly personal.

  2. M.... P....

Wow like the Beatles with sitharh

  3. T.... ....

The worst song on the album

    T.... ....

One of the BEST songs on the album.

    T.... ....

I used to loathe this song....but now I love it (30 years later)

    T.... ....

Perfectly placed in the masterpiece album. Brilliant.

This is one of those albums that was such a departure that you kind of take a step back. Then you find yourself singing the songs from it. For me it was "Where's The Shoorah." Then "Tonight" "Crazy Water," "One Horse Town" "Chameleon" etc... It's pretty "un-pop" which I like. Elton said it's one of his favorite albums. He had a lot of fun recording it. I like Roger Pope but I miss Nigel - one of the best and most unique drummers in music today. I'd love to have heard what he would have done with the drums and vocals.

Blue Moves is one of my fav top 4 EJ albums. Its' so good and it was recorded in Toronto, ON which is kind of cool if your from there. IT was recorded at one of the state of art studios Eastern Sound. I mean, there is a reason this record sounds as good as it does. james newton howard and gus dudgeon made a really great audiophile record really. Listen to the track, Wide Eyed And Laughing detail and instrumentation- most of it electric Coral guiter (electric sitar), and some percussion with synths.

I can't help but think that Blue Moves would have made an amazing
    single-album of 10 songs.....
    Side A
    0. (Your starter for....)
    1. Tonight
    2. One Horse Town
    3. Chameleon
    4. Cage the Songbird
    5. Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word
    Side B
    6. Between Seventeen and Twenty
    7. Someone's Final Song
    8. Crazy Water
    9. Shoulder Holster
    10. Bite your Lip (but way shorter....probably 5 minutes tops)

    Thoughts?

    A.... M....

I agree it should have been a single album and I agree with the vast majority of your selection, with shortened Bite your Lip. But I would certainly add Idol, much better than Shoulder Holster. I think Wide Eyed and Laughing might be included too.

    A.... M....

Alf Merck actually I'd swap bite your lip for Idol... otherwise right on

    A.... M....

If swap Idol for Bite Your Lip for sure. Wide Eyed and Laughing would be nice to have but if the goal is for 10 songs I’d sacrifice it. And then learn about it 30 years later as a digital album bonus track!

  7. N.... G....

J'adore cet intro! Il est !super

    N.... G....

    +Nigel Guliver Guliver moie aussi.

  8. I.... V....

    Master Piece!!

  9. I.... V....

    Very Nice!!

  10. M.... L....

I used to listen to this at night to go to sleep.  Blue Moves was a commercial flop, and yet it is one my favorite EJ albums.  Crosby and Nash, Toni Tenille--the supporting cast is superb.  This is a really good album.

    M.... L....

+Meg Larson And The Captain also

    M.... L....

It made #3 in the USA......

    M.... L....

    Flop??????

    M.... L....

    Eric Reese it’s all relative...

    M.... L....

by Elton's standards at the time- breaking a run of #1 albums in USA

  11. M.... K....

I forget how good this album is.

  12. s.... ....

what? you can't add or subtract from this album. Come1 kick that corperate pussbags ass for me

  13. m.... ....

O.K. I'm pissed! I wore this out on vinyl and years later I shelled ot something like 30 bucks for the CD by mail order........THIS was one of 4 songs cut from the disc! Grrrrrrr.....

    m.... ....

I never bought that cheap 1 CD edition. "The Wide Eyed and Laughing" is very strange, but fantastic, and the vocals, sitar and sound gives me goose-bumps all over. One of my top-3 EJ songs ever.

    m.... ....

Ironically, many say (and I mostly agree), that this should’ve been just a single album; this song would’ve surely been cut, as well as Out of the blue.

  14. m.... ....

Elton's bravest album, really fascinating. What a pity he then took a wrong turn. The good news is that the new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is a real return to form

  15. m.... ....

    how about John Reid?

  16. P.... D....

    Elton + David + Graham = WOW!
