Elton John - Teacher I Need You Lyrics

I was sitting in the classroom
Trying to look intelligent
In case the teacher looked at me
She was long and she was lean
She's a middle-aged dream
And that lady means the whole world to me

It's a natural achievement
Conquering my homework
With her image pounding in my brain
She's an inspiration
For my graduation
And she helps to keep the classroom sane

Oh teacher I need you like a little child
You got something in you to drive a schoolboy wild
You give me education in the lovesick blues
Help me get straight come out and say
Teacher I, teacher I, teacher I, Teacher I need you

I have to write a letter
Tell about my feelings
Just to let her know the scene
Focus my attention
On some further education
In connection with the birdies and the bees

So I'm sitting in the classroom
I'm looking like a zombie
I'm waiting for the bell to ring
I've got John Wayne stances
I've got Erroll Flynn advances
And it doesn't mean a doggoned thing

The opening piano sounds as if he's going to break into
    Jackson Browne's "Doctor My Eyes."

What happened to music ? This makes contemporary artist lyrics and melodies sound well Neanderthal!

The symphony and background singers are amazing

  6. I.... B....

You can tell this was inspired by Jackson Browne and Doctor My Eyes

  7. J.... O....

I got this album on cassette in 1991 I think... or 1993.... anyway, my father has purchased it for me from a gas station in Hungary when we have driven to Germany from Romania (I am Romanian). My father used to like EJ back then while I had no idea who he was. I am one of those people who mature late (I've had the mind of a child until 30+ years, I still am a child actually even today, I just hide it very well :p) .... as I was saying, my father had purchased this cassette as gift to me back then, and I have only gotten the chance to listen to it 3 weeks later when we returned to Romania. At that time I was being a fan of Queen, ABBA, Roxette, and Michael Jackson. That's pretty much the entire music I knew about, and I had put the EJ cassette on out of curiosity... and I didn't like it that much. Only Crocodile Rock has caught my attention and only because of the "LAAA... LALALALALAA... LALALALALAA... LALALALALA" chorus xD ...After listening to the songs on that album once (I don't even think I have listened to the entire album at that time) I have put the cassette away and I have totally forgotten about it, or downright ignored it for many years, especially since in the early 2000s CDs and later on DVDs were making cassettes obsolete... But anyway, for a decade or so I have totally forgotten about this album, even though in the meantime I had learned more about who EJ was and I had listened to some of his 90s songs (I have even liked songs like Sacrifice and I'm Still Standing, which are still 2 of my all-time EJ songs to this very day) thanks to VH1 and MTV, but I still didn't return back to this album... until around 2006-2007 when my heavy depression has kicked in. Around those years I would go into severe depression for several years (6-7, maybe 8) and it was around this time that I got back to my collection of cassettes and CDs that were containing stuff like Lorena McKennitt, Elton John (this album), Paul McCartney (Flaming Pie), 3 or 4 CDs with Bob Marley (including a "greatest hits" one), Modern Talking (Greatest Hits), and many other performers that I don't remember at the moment... and going through this collection I found this cassette again and I have no idea why I've put it on the cassette recorder to play (yes, I still had a working cassette recorded even though at that time even DVD players were becoming obsolete due to the emergence of internet, youtube and smartphones)... so, I've put this album into the tape recorder / cassette recorder (whatever the hell it's called, I don't know the technical name for it) and some of the songs seemed familiar, and somehow catchy. Needless to say that in the state that I've been at that time (heavily depressed most of the time, like 20-22 hours a day, 6 days a week, for 6-7 years straight) songs like Funeral for a Friend and Blues for Baby and Me have caught on more than Crocodile Rock or Teacher I Need You. Actually, Blues For Baby And Me has been one of the songs that have helped me the most with depression (the other one being ABBA's Voulez Vouz). I don't know why these songs / artists have helped me cope with depression more than other songs / artists but it is what it is. And in the process I have actually gotten to love this album (which is one of the reasons I still have it on cassette to this very day), and I have also gotten to deem Blues For Baby And Me as one of the best - if not THE best - EJ songs that I've listened to. This whole album is amazing indeed, and BFMBAM is definitely my favorite song of EJ, and in top 100 songs of all time for me.

  47. P.... R....

Trying to get to his farewell tour concert in Orlando. Can't believe he is finally retiring.

  48. M.... B....

perfect combination of music, lyrics, and great production. The breaks, the slight echo, background vocals, and drumbeat emphasis in the chorus are all the genius of Gus Dudgeon

    M.... B....

Mike Britt Yes Gus Dudgeon was as useful to Elton as George Martin was to the Beatles. Both producers were integral to the success of both Elton and The Beatles.

  49. J.... D....

been teaching 30+ years and am still waiting for someone to say ...............

  55. B.... M....

Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano Player was the last album that Arranger/Composer Paul Buckmaster worked on at the start Elton John's career. Paul was responsible for creating "the Big Sound" that was a trademark of Elton John's early albums. List carefully to the music and take in the rich sounds of the string section and the French Horn. Paul would be brought in to contribute on a handful other albums. John and producer Gus Dudgeon decided the era of the Big Sound in Rock&Roll no longer fit Elton John's artistic pursuits. Paul Buckmaster passed away last year on November 7, 2017 at the age of 71.The production of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road featured a new arranger Del Newman as the Arranger replacing Paul. With Elton John announcing his farewell tour entitled "Farewell Yellowbrick Road" I think its time we recognize Paul for historic contributions to Elton's career in his critical early years and all the memories both Elton and Paul gave us.

    B.... M....

Agree with you 100% about Paul Buckmaster.  When I first heard Believe in mid 90's the instrumental part sounded like PM arrangement.  Sure enough it was him.

  56. V.... K....

Oh crap, I had John Wayne advances and Errol Flynn stances. Goddammnit!

  57. D.... D....

It´s my favourite tune from him. You can hear it ten times after another and it doesn´t get boring at all.

  58. A.... P....

Such a great song about childhood innocence.

  59. s.... l....

je suis le seul français a écouter ça?

  60. E.... H....

Back in school in Dryden, when I played this song, I thought about a teacher named Miss Betty Williams. There were several students who had a crush on Miss Williams.

  61. J.... B....

This whole album is just fabulous.

    J.... B....

    Pretty good stuff!

    J.... B....

Pat Gipps I know, right!!! Great song. I can sing this so good with him.

    J.... B....

My favorite other than tumbleweed connection

    J.... B....

    except for crocodile rock

    J.... B....

Pretty much every single one of his older albums are chock full of good stuff and he ALWAYS put the lyrics to every song in his albums either as a separate booklet or just inside covers and I still KNOW EVERY SINGLE ONE. I even turned my oldest grandson in my town on to his I'm still standing from the animated movie Sing..he kept singing the song and asking me to rewind it back so he could hear it again so I said why not give the original a listen and look..he didn't even cringe at the 80s hair and half naked men but absolutely loved it so of course I played more and even showed the parodies of popular songs that weird al yanokich did and again they loved them so I just kept playing the good stuff going back 50-60 years and made a fan for early Elvis Presley outta my younger grandson here. His favorite is jailhouse rock and he has excellent taste because I think it's one of the gold standards that will always be awesome.

  62. F.... E....

This is Elton John’s Best Song , great music & voices. Love this song .

certainly the best and it's close

  80. S.... ....

Agreed! These lyrics still ring true today, even if you can't say stuff like this in today's educational environment for fear of getting your teacher investigated or fired or worse. If any among us says we didn't have exactly this kind of mad crush on a teacher at some point, we're lyin' like a rug.

My God, Tell me about it! I had Miss English for English - no it's true. I sat in the 2nd row, she was very fit, assertive and leggy. She would sit on a front row desk while looking upwards towards heaven legs akimbo talking passionately about Shakespeare, sometimes directly in front of me..I was looking towards heaven too but not the same one. I was always the last one to stand at the end of class and very careful how I did it.

Clever Elton song -- should be played back to back with Freddy Cannon's "Abigail Beecher." (1964) --
"Hey, everybody get out of the street now // I hear the roar of an XKE now // Sloppy sweater and pony tail // And the cop on the corner is turnin' pale // Whoo, it's Abigail Beecher, our history teacher." I could hear Elton cover this. Yeah...Elton's "Teacher I Need You" and "Abigail Beecher," -- must all be from the same school. I am sure Van Halen heard this song too when they decided to do "Hot For Teacher." For those who don't know...Freddy Cannon was a rocker to the bone. Incredible vocalist. Up there with Elton. "Palisades Park," "June, July and August," "Action," (that featured Leon Russell's piano and Elvis' James Burton on guitar) -- all incredible tunes in a manner that Elton adapted years later equally well. Cannon had a long career -- still records and performs.

  96. A.... w....

When I first heard this song, I went to Dryden High. Me and a few others had a crush on a school teacher named Betty Williams. Also we had hoped a school mate of ours would be a teacher too. She was called Dryden's sex symbol.
