Elton John - Social Disease Lyrics

My bulldog is barking in the backyard
Enough to raise a dead man from his grave
And I can't concentrate on what I'm doing
Disturbance going to crucify my days

And the days they get longer and longer
And the nighttime is a time of little use
For I just get ugly and older
I get juiced on Mateus and just hang loose

And I get bombed for breakfast in the morning
I get bombed for dinner time and tea
I dress in rags, smell a lot, and have a real good time
I'm a genuine example of a social disease

My landlady lives in a caravan
Well that is when she isn't in my arms
And it seems I pay the rent in human kindness
But my liquor also helps to grease her palms

And the ladies are all getting wrinkles
And they're falling apart at the seams
Well I just get high on tequila
And see visions of vineyards in my dreams

Elton John Social Disease Comments
  1. TravelinBand747

You wily Bernie Taupin, the only poet who could have used "juiced," "Mateus," and "loose" in the same sentence and have it make sense. :P

  2. V S

Get juiced on Matus and just hang loose - Can I get an amen?

  3. fabio ibba cannavò

The best double album of all time...great songs, great musicians... E.J., Dee Murray, Nigel Ollson, Davey Johnstone, Ray Cooper...a war machine...

  4. Mark Gelbart

    Love that sax.

  5. Mark Gelbart

This is my favorite Elton John song. It celebrates us alcoholics. Fuck you anti-alcoholicites.

  6. L.Hop

    This song is a mood

  7. Mark Gelbart

I bet I am the only Elton John Fan in the world (and there are millions...maybe billions) who will proudly admit this is his favorite Elton John song.

  8. aimee glatt

And I just get ugly and older 😆😆😆😆

  9. Robin L. Knudsen

RLK- On-line is SOCIAL I don't have a social awful deposition.
    Robin L. Knudsen

  10. Ikrani

Most underrated album in Elton's entire discography. So many good songs ignored in his concert playlists and by the masses, like "Roy Rogers", "The Ballad of Danny Bailey", and especially "Social Disease".

  11. SWC revived

I like how this song starts off quieter than all the other songs on the album so that you have to crank it up loud, because this song is better the louder you play it.

    Liv Magaro

    Exactly

  12. Nemi

Love this song so much! Had it on repeat to put me to sleep, I love it so much!
It's such a comedic song, but I love it. Funny and still pretty good. When I first listened to the song, I heard the song but I didn't hear the lyrics. Even then, I still liked it.

  13. David Maholchic

Put this song in the dictionary under Elton John

  14. Malu Patsy Gomez

On my bucket list .. to hopefully see my Elton John and take my brother Leo along side me, the memories growing up listening to Elton . One of my regrets to take to my grave ! Wait for me John , I’m 60 got one left in college then maybe I’ll see you next year or two .. love you Elton John..

  15. Brandon Videos

    2018-19 anyone???

  16. vincent hewlett

a perfect double album, every track can stand on its own merit, just utterly brilliant

    Mark Gelbart

Except for Jamaica Jerkoff. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is without a doubt the best RocknRoll Album of all time, but "J.J." is poor reggae.

    Mackey -

That song is meant to be tongue in cheek. Not meant to be taken seriously as actual reggae.

  17. Rudy Shelton

Currently getting juiced on Mateus, hanging loose

  18. Gerald Adams

This song always makes me smile! :)

  19. Mark Gelbart

Let's celebrate alcoholism, boiby. Let's. I know Elton swore off this stuff, years ago. His loss, not ours.

  20. Frankincensed

Every song on this album is a gem.

    Dean Barton

Yes. Perhaps best pop album EVER

    Noelle O'Brien

Every artist has got at least one album that’s perfection.
Ziggy Stardust, a night at the opera, dark side of the moon, etc
    This is elton’s

  21. Mark Gelbart

    Karaoke?

  22. Mark Gelbart

This is my favorite Elton John song of all time, and it is TRUE rock n roll. A song that celebrates alcoholism. Yeah! That is rebellious, man; and rock n roll is supposed to be rebellious. I am an alcoholic and I am proud of it, and you will never find me standing in front of a lame AA meeting.

    bruce cowles

    Jesus I the wine

  23. Flo Ryan

    This is some real music

  24. roliman55

This Is The "Dirtiest" Song On The Album. Until This, in 1973, Not Too Many Groups Dared To Sing Of The Glories Of Debauchery. Well, Elton/Bernie Hit It Out Of The Park Here. They Had No Such Reservations. " I Get Juiced On Mateus And Just Hang Loose." Thanks Fellas. You Kept It Real. "I Just Get Ugly And Older."  Wow. So True. You Were The First.

  25. DiabloSandwich59

Anyone know where to get the sheet music for this?

  26. Ken Brownfield

    Elton and Bernie are awesome!

    Ken Brownfield

They wrote this song for me :-)

  27. Anderson Plácido

    Amooooooooo

  28. plop888

    New Orleans inspired this melody

  29. Ima SuperPerson

Folks, the "high note" in this song is a D5 falsetto. It is NOT a D6. So please don't post that anymore. I wasted a lot of time feakin' this thing on a meter. LOL

  30. Ima SuperPerson

This song was as close to "filler material" as they came on the GYBR album. And it was still awesome. LOL

  31. Ima SuperPerson

Well I just get high on tequila
And see visions of vineyards in my dreams

  32. Johan Liebert

Any other 20 something listening to this song/album? :)

    Math Guy

Yes! You are not alone... ;-)

    Johan Liebert

    Math Guy Awesome!

    Lillymustdie

  34. Anderson Plácido

    Amoooooooooooo

  35. Luke Airow

lol... this tune that i just had the pleasure of listen' to had to been a freakin trip to the music heads of the 70's. they had to have thought this tune might have been to country soundin,' lol... if i had an idea i would say it's a rockabilly sound....

  36. Ira Rozin

This song so funny. That even improves the mood. I love it.

    Maureen Wagg

I hope Kid Rock doesn't remake this song. He probably doesn't know what Mateus is and he's gonna screw it up for us all. lol

    NeverSaySandwich1

@Maureen Wagg he should do it

  42. Adream withinadream

Elton John is still around people! His new album is called "Wonderful Crazy Night". You'll find several tracks just here on youtube!

  43. rick bogdanich

Maybe this should be Las Vegas' theme song .. but it was not intended as life style advice

  44. TheDanielCorp

Highest registered note of any Elton song... he actually hits a D6

    Wes Bittick

Reminds me of my drinking days Fun times but looking back it was really a big waste of my brains cells. It is amazing how we look back and think we had it " dialed in".

  60. Kevin P

I almost agree with that. I have another, (Amoreena) I might put higher, but this one just kicks ass.

  61. Vortigern99

This Elton and Bernie's best song, IMO!

  62. First Impressions

For me this is a Rolling Stones' pastiche. It wouldn't have been out of place on 'Stciky Fingers'. Check out gw930 dot blog dot com slash musicologist

  63. TighelanderII

I would love to hear Willie Nelson sing this.

    Patrick Lenehan

    That would be good

  64. Raust Lok

And I have a... heart of gold!

  65. Matthew Rathmanner

I hope the super concerts of the 70s and 80s return and I get to see Elton. Anyone ever seen one of these concerts. The ones with at least 50 or 60 thousand people in a sporting event stadium.

    Rebecca DeKalb

oh yes. back in 73.."festival seating". mind blowing.

  66. Thomas Bragg

this was my fav' album fer' a long time...an' dis' song meant a lot to an alcoholic like me

  67. schclum

peter griffin's gay cowboy song is quite similar

  68. ureatowel15

@EngineerOfRed thats not how mathematics work

  69. Jack Romero

Someday I'm gonna do a parody cover of this song with the lyrics slightly altered to be about cannabis. "Well I just get high on White Widow and see fields of OG Kush in my dreams...!"

Well, maybe I won't... BUT SOMEONE SHOULD.

  70. Elisha DeGroot

This song is a contagious disease that you just cant get enough of :)

  71. tdcskp

I used to play this LOUD in my house in the East Texas woods so the little ol' ladies would stop shakin' Bibles at me! Gotta' love his music and it did do the trick. Truth is I was a God fearing Christian the whole time- I just needed Elton's lyrics to get the hypocrites off my back. Whole album was made in my senior year- love it!

  72. wpollock1

Clearly his best album....the so-called critics say that it is Tumbleweed Connection but that is not right. This album is just so strong in every way.

I saw this show in Detroit in 1974 and I have never been blown away at a concert - but when he started with Funeral For a Friend in the dark with the smoke.....wow, maybe the best concert I have witnessed.

  73. Spaz Tzu

1 dislike out of 100 likes? That's 1 person out of 100. So 100% of people liked this. Therefore, nobody disliked it in the first place.

  74. kandroid96

  83. Мария Ледова

@Perry064 Too drunk to hit the right button, no doubt.

  84. Perry064

This song reminds me of my life! Sometimes there is just nothing you can do but get drunk! I know it doesn't solve all my problems, but it sure makes them more tolerable! Thank you Elton for giving me a song to drift to when I am diving into my own Social Disease! One person missed the "like" button!

  85. JR1960actor

How is this a bonus track? I assure you, this song was on the original vinyl LP that I owed in the 70's. It's one of my favorite songs. How can you not love this? Thanks for posting!

  96. walt mciver

"Well, my landlady lives in a caravan/Well, that is when she isn't in my arms/And it seems to pay the rent with human kindness, but my liquor also helps to grease her palms"--Bernie Taupin was a fantastic lyricist and Elton really knew how to interpret them to get the message across!
