Elton John - Roy Rodgers Lyrics

Sometimes you dream, sometimes it seems
There's nothing there at all
You just seem older than yesterday
And you're waiting for tomorrow to call

You draw to the curtain and one thing's for certain
You're cozy in your little room
The carpet's all paid for, God bless the TV
Let's go shoot a hole in the moon

And Roy Rogers is riding tonight
Returning to our silver screens
Comic book characters never grow old
Evergreen heroes whose stories were told
Oh the great sequin cowboy who sings of the plains
Of roundups and rustlers and home on the range
Turn on the T.V., shut out the lights
Roy Rogers is riding tonight

Nine o'clock mornings, five o'clock evenings
I'd liven the pace if I could
Oh I'd rather have a ham in my sandwich than cheese
But complaining wouldn't do any good

Lay back in my armchair, close eyes and think clear
I can hear hoofbeats ahead
Roy and Trigger have just hit the hilltop
While the wife and the kids are in bed

I have taught for many years, but during the last 5 years I began to teach primary (grade 3). I have found that for grades 3 through 12, the best way to teach poetry is through song lyrics. My poetry focus (starting in grade 3) is to have students identify: alliteration, consonance, assonance, similes and metaphors while reading the lyrics to a song. (Taupin’s lyrics are the best for this, and the students do not immediately identify his writing). Once I reintroduce the sample in its musical form, I will play it several times as the students seem to absorb the lesson better. They are also able to independently identify further poetic devices. I will then follow up by using the lyrics to a top 40 song (I know they will recognize) once it’s played. They become so excited to be able to point out various poetic devices that are showcased in a song they enjoy. Lastly, students’ poetry test scores increased dramatically if I introduce poetry using song lyrics over independent verse.

  36. laercio5412

Esse álbum é bom apesar de algumas canções não fazer o menor sentido tipo pra que homenagear uma pessoa na qual nunca conheceram? Ou um personagem imaginário?

  37. Terau Gene

Still listening in 2019? Anyone? Damn deep album for 1973.... great memories.Too bad the millennials will never know what great music is.......

  46. Desmond Dowling

A time of innocence summed up by this song.
God bless you Elton and Bernie.

  47. Harry Britnell

I bet the albums of today won't be played 40 odd years later or command a place in the top 50 of the all time great albums, I don't think we will ever hear anything of its like again such beautiful lyrics and tunes.

  48. Tim Herman

I play this song all the time, it's one of my favorites because of the 3:4 time signature. I played it once in the Moses Lake, WA Music Store, and one person there actually knew it.

  49. Jack Thompson

"Roy & Trigger have just hit the hilltop, while the wife and kids are in bed." Brilliant.

    Chuck Smith

I can see the dust...Roy and Trigger riding into the sun...shooting straight with every soul, bringing justice.

  50. TravelinBand747

Bernie Taupin was very inspired by images of the old American West. He wrote so many songs about it and now lives on a ranch in California.

  51. PussnBoot2516

Love the album and this song in particular. It's the nostalgia and childhood memories Elton sings about that have you remembering your own memories of childhood.

  52. Anthony Lawrence

Listen and listen good because you will never her anyone make music like this again

We grow old and die but our comic book and silver screen hero’s never do and they remind us to the end who we once were.

  57. Chris Kellison

This album set as good as Sargent peppers for its time. Elton at his very best as well as Berne. 🙏❤️👽👁

  58. Jeff Wilson

He had several good albums. But this album by far was the best one he ever did. Just about every song was a #1 hit.

  59. ftsjr

Maybe my favorite song, on this magnificent album.

  60. Rosaly A Castro Castro

    Maravilhosa!

  61. Antonio Vazquez

    brilliant

  62. Frankincensed

Bernie was great at creating entirely separate pictures via various characters. He’d often use a particular character to speak about others in general. Like Candle in the Wind wasn’t just about Monroe but celebrity icons that died in their prime. Very few writing teams as talented as Bernie and Elton.

  63. Magnus Magnuson

I'm 59 and this album only gets better.

    Jerry Mammoser

Magnus Magnuson You’re Goddamned right, it does!

    fraises

I'm 48 and I understand you 100% ( from Belgium), god protect England for eternity

I agree Im 64 yrs old I wore this album when I was in the United States Marine Corps. Took from Camp LeJeune NC to Camp Foster Okinawa and back to Camp LeJeune, still played it on the way home when I finished my 4 yrs in the Corps. Love Roy Rogers movies and the TV show.

    Cindy Sanchez

58, here... did you have the album? Beautifully done... love this song; I sing alto, and this is so easy to harmonize to! Used to toot a flute to the melody... love the hoofbeats fading out at the end!

  65. Patrick Higgins

'... I'd rather have ham in my sandwich than cheese...' only Elton John could make lyrics that ordinary sound that fabulous!!!

  74. Evelyn Edeen

Listening to this made me, a 70 year old, tear up. A regret of my life is that I never met Roy. When I was a little one, I was convinced that someday I would ride the range with Roy and Dale. Of course this never happened except in my heart. Thanks, Elton. And thanks for posting, sydlivy.

    roliman55

It's Ok. You DID Meet Roy. My GOD. You Feel The Same Thing I Do. I am 62. You Are 70. This Song Is So Freaking Awesome. The Youngsters Below Us Have No Idea. We Understand What Elton Meant To Us. They Do Not. Never Forget That My Brother. Roy Rogers Is Riding Tonight. We Knew. They Did Not.

    Michael Kadunce

    Evelyn Edeen.

  75. Al Dunlop

What's insane about this album between Elton and Bernie is how mature the topics are on almost every song, well beyond their age at the time. I weep when I hear modern songs with no soul...

    shhh

I think the problem is you, Al. There's lots of modern music with soul today.

    Christoph Moult

Kind of a dick reply there JY jelly. Music sucks so much these days. Think about when this album came out. They had so much good music coming out the woodwork. They were spoiled but thank the lord for spoiling them. The 60's was even bigger than that. The 80s was pretty good too and the 90's was the last gasp and everything went to shit. Music used to be an event. On this day in 1992, Nirvana released Smells Like Teen Spirit. The thing was a monster. It was culture defining. It spoke to the soul collective. Do you hear anything that big going on now.

    Dick Head

@Christoph Moult Anything hip-hop! Talk about culture defining. Do you think most people who grew up in the 30's listening to Frank Sinatra and Dave Brubeck even liked the The Beatles and Elvis when they rolled around? It's all a cycle. People like you just don't pay attention to music and what's going on now, then make generalizations saying: "Where's the soul in modern music?" Open a fucking music magazine and read beyond the charts.

  76. Tarquin45

I wonder if this song would have been written if Bernie Taupin hadn’t listened to Marty Robbins.

  77. Theresa Pugh

My life story album. Numero Uno.

  78. Wes Bittick

When I hear this song it makes me sad yet happy of days gone by. Sit in the dark with the fire dying down and the dog asleep at your feet— - - it doesn’t get any better than that.

  79. Luiz Frank

Thanks to post it. I love Elton's Songs

  80. Gary Hawkins

"I'd rather have ham on my sandwich than cheese, but complaining wouldn't do any good". What an imagination by Bernie Taupin!

  81. Aftr Shock
