Elton John - Postcards From Richard Nixon Lyrics

We heard Richard Nixon say, welcome to the USA
The common sense I sometimes lack
Has opened up a seismic crack
We've fallen in and I can't pull back
And I guess we'll have to stay

In open arms we put our trust they put us on a big red bus
Twin spirits soaking up a dream
Fuel to feed the press machine
After years that were long and lean
We're finally on our way

[chorus:]
And Richard Nixon's on his knees he's sent so many overseas
He'd like to know if you and me could help him in some way
A little camouflage and glue to mask the evil that men do
A small diversion caused by two, pale kids come to play
And we heard Richard Nixon say "welcome to the USA"

Neither of us understood the way things ticked in Hollywood
We just loaded in and grabbed the bat
With little room to swing a cat
And pretty soon we were where it's at
Or so the papers say

And all around us suntanned teens, beauty like we'd never seen
Our heroes led us by the hand
Through Brian Wilson's promised land
Where Disney's God and he commands
Both mice and men to stay

[repeat chorus]

In a bright red Porsche on Sunset I saw Steve McQueen
I guess he's just about the coolest guy I've ever seen
And for you and me that speeding car is how it's going to be
I see no brakes just open road and lots of gasoline

Oh we heard Richard Nixon say, welcome to the USA
The common sense I sometimes lack
Has opened up a seismic crack
We've fallen in and I can't pull back

Pale kids come to play
And we heard Richard Nixon say, I've gotta go but you can stay

  7. M.... ....

    trump sent me

  8. d.... b....

It must have been fun being a rock star in the 1970's.

    d.... b....

Elton would know with drug addiction and attempts of suicide.

  9. O.... T....

    Absolutely brilliant !!

  10. A.... S....

    MUITO BOM

  11. S.... S....

  12. M.... ....

    love it

  13. L.... U....

I remember thinking the first time I put this album on, and every time since: what a ballsy opening for a huge pop music star.

There is absolutely nowhere to hide here... no costumes, no stage gadgetry, no prima donna swagger, just one amazing musician who hasn't forgotten the chops he learned the hard way on the session circuits. Songwriting aside -- and this is a great return to form there too -- this sounds like a "hungry" album, the kind people produce starting out, and the kind seldom heard from somebody of Sir Elton's huge stature. As a "celebrity entertainer" he wouldn't have to be half this good to sell out stadiums anymore: only bar bands and opening acts have to be this solid to make a living. And he's still doing it. Bravo.

    L.... U....

    Luke's Ukes u r a smart guy

  14. L.... D....

    beautiful musicality

  15. J.... P....

Probojeffro, this is THE Postcards from Richard Nixon. Go make that post on another Elton video. Lol.

  16. K.... H....

Probrojeffro you really seem to hate all of Elton's recent output! May I ask, why are you here then?

  17. M.... ....

    right after DISNEY

  18. M.... ....

I'm here from the legend of korra

  19. d.... ....

Hermosa canción, es genial como va creciendo hacia el final!

    d.... ....

    Si, si, es verdad!!!

  20. 3.... ....

    Great Song!

  21. M.... ....

    THE BUTLER brought me here

  22. T.... T....

One of THE best piano-driven gems of the last 20 years, with a rich, purposeful vocal, no less. Yet another great example of how Elton & Bernie weave lush audio-visual tapestries, we refer to, for lack of a better word, as "songs" . Pure magic.

  23. F.... ....

Damn, just another Postcards from Richard Nixon song. How many of these are going to be written?

    F.... ....

    Wtf are you smoking?

  24. y.... ....

Maybe a little like Diamond, but also some serious Billy Joel too.

  25. M.... S....

Elton John and Bernie Taupin are the greatest Song writing partnership that has ever walked the planet !!! I completly agree with Axl Rose from Guns N Roses said about Elton John and Bernie Taupin, in an interview in 1991 and when he inducted Elton into the Rock N Roll Hall of fame.

  26. C.... ....

    @fascistamericadotnet

  27. m.... ....

The Diving Board, already recorded, due out early 2013

  28. M.... ....

references to Walt Disney and John Steinbeck in the the same song how unusual and also why Referance Walt Disney Elton?

  29. W.... ....

Elton add some parts of this song to the intro of Take me to the pilot (live)

  30. L.... ....

    Love it!
