I love Elton but I don't 'get' this at all, and the video is very odd.

It really doesn't make much sense without some context. The song is about the apartheid in South Africa, where they had for example "white only" trains that black people couldn't ride. Hence "deny the passenger" and the whole thing in the video with African dancing, faces painted half in black and half in white, etc. Even the melody is from a South African song: Isonto Lezayoni by Phineas Mkhize.

This is one of the Elton John songs that I first then I heard another songs and I loved his and Bernie Turpin songs. My all favourite artist of all!! I used to drive my parents mad on long car journeys as I had to listen my Elton John Tapes!!!!!! I have Elton'songs for over 30 years now!!! Long live Elton John!!!

I remember this tune when I was at junior school, absolutely loved it! The video was funny, and I loved the call and response, rolling along tune. Ace. Still love it to this day. My sister had a now that's what I call music lp, this was on it, my sister loved the tune too!

See the Glory Hole at 0:27 with all the arms coming through!!! An unusual African inspired song which is pretty catchy. The Breaking Hearts LP is not the strongest as it has the excellent 2 Low 4 Zero before it and the very good Ice On Fire after it. Then again Leather Jackets is pretty poor from 1986. Eltons grin at the end is pretty scary!

This song takes its melody verbatim from a South African 1960s artist by Phineas Mkhize . The title is; Isonto Lezayoni look it up if you are interested

HA HA, this melody is absolutely moronic. The melody in the verses is one of the best things Elton has ever written, and it's a shame it was combined with this African chant, otherwise the song would have been much better overall.

I always thought this was an attempt to get a bit've Paul simon's brilliant mix of African, folk and pop 'gracelands'...🎶
