Elton John - Levon Lyrics

Levon wears his war wound like a crown
He calls his child Jesus
'Cause he likes the name
And he sends him to the finest school in town

Levon, Levon likes his money
He makes a lot they say
Spend his days counting
In a garage by the motorway

He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day
When the New York Times said God is dead
And the war's begun
Alvin Tostig has a son today

And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
And he shall be Levon
In tradition with the family plan
And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
He shall be Levon

Levon sells cartoon balloons in town
His family business thrives
Jesus blows up balloons all day
Sits on the porch swing watching them fly

And Jesus, he wants to go to Venus
Leaving Levon far behind
Take a balloon and go sailing
While Levon, Levon slowly dies

  9. D.... E....

Gaby of field of dreams came to my grad dinner for high school before music theater college and said go to the von wine bar. I grew up in the met opera and the von trap family from the sound of music about escaping the nazis was my favorite growing up.

  10. C.... S....

    Such a dope shirt

  11. J.... F....

Just amazing talent, no autotune, no net, only talent. Love this

  12. F.... S....

he has good songs, writes good music, he's on pitch, but the quality of his voice sucks. always did.

    F.... S....

Fred Smith Complete and utter bullshit. And a very distinctive voice to boot. Of course over the years it wasn’t the same. But you are so off. Whether someone has an operatic voice or not (a lot of range) is immaterial. Especially in the rock genre.

    F.... S....

@lemurian chick it's a matter of opinion, but to me his voice sucks. it lacks fullness. whiney, squeaky. he's overrated in general. the songs were catchy musically, that's what carried him.

  13. B.... ....

Remembered when this song was brand new. It feels like only yesterday. His early stuff was the best.

  14. E.... R....

I’m 59 , I have loved Texas love song- and Levon since day one, from Eugene , Oregon. Esrogers19, love Elton John to my death.

  18. P.... M....

Nobody knows where to put this song in the history, or whether to leave it out altogether, though St. Paul does mention it in passing.

  19. S.... S....

if you want to hear his best song...Holiday Inn BBC 1971 (or 70) his peak voice playing a song that for some reason never got the attention....

  20. T.... ....

Feel that fuckin funk? Btw the drummer is a smoke, UPDATE nvm it’s a guy

  21. D.... E....

    God damn the shit heads

  22. D.... E....

  29. D.... G....

Aghhh 1971 was arguably the best year in Rock History, Then you had 1973!

  33. J.... B....

    Elton John

  34. B.... B....

Looks like Sir Reg is digging the Song himself. The gradual Bass and Drums are great, but Nigel needs to pull his Britches up! haha An early, priceless Gem from Bernie Taupin, and Elton

  35. B.... B....

LOVE this live, slightly funkier, upbeat version!! Please tell me who Alvin Tostig was? Thanks, so cool and soulful.!

    B.... B....

LOLOLOL. I always wanted to know that. Amazing song!

  36. J.... S....

this song packs a punch......feelings...….nerves...…...emotions...….all of the above

  37. J.... B....

    J.... B....

Not even close to this caliber of mind blowing talent and incredibly gifted vocals.

  38. W.... M....

Dee Murray on bass, Nigel Olsson on drums and Elton on piano.....ah, there was a time.....

  39. n.... o....

    “Believe On”

  50. H.... ....

I saw him at Spokane a few years ago when i was 9 we were really close to the stage.

  51. M.... L....

My favorite Elton John song, brilliant!

    S.... H....

such a sweet smile he had when he was young.

  64. L.... M....

    This is my fave

  65. m.... ....

    My favorite tune of his....
I never personally bought any of his records because my sister, her friends, and my girlfriend (future wife) all had them.
If you were a teen in 1970, you automatically know every word to every song of his.
    Total respect for EJ.

This is one of my favorite lyrics ever written....

Levon sells cartoon balloons in town
    His family business thrives
Jesus blows up balloons all day
Sits on the porch swing watching them fly
And Jesus, he wants to go to Venus
    Leave Levon far behind

    While Levon, Levon slowly dies

  66. T.... i....

  68. M.... M....

Reg at his BEST!!! Did he not know how gifted he was? BernieT. shines too. And the BAND!

  70. B.... H....

Fuck. Music was so good once.

Simply a stellar performance! I remember when he exploded onto the scene! He's rocked us steady for a long time! Elton John......one of the coolest names too!

  72. D.... N....

You can tell the drugs are there but haven't taken over completely yet. Soon though.

  78. n.... ....

Soundtrack of the 1970s equals Elton John's music in those years for millions of people. This song if you had to name one, is his best.

  79. G.... L....

1 of the best !!! Songs

  80. M.... C....

    Elton John melts faces!

  83. J.... B....

Wow, Elton John sounds amazing live! Great video

  84. l.... c....

I love how he just delivered a mystical experience and he takes a sip and casually says thank you. I just saw the movie, which activated a desire to listen to Elton and Bernie's music/poetry. The movie is great for a biopic in the sense that it's wonderful visually and there are some amazing dance/musical numbers. I just wish they would have included more of this Elton/Bernie music.

  85. p.... ....

    Nice ditty

  86. 1.... ....

The great interpreter of Bernie Taupin

  87. g.... ....

Fantastic ❤ Elton was at his peak then. I get a warm fuzzy feeling listening to him sing and it's nice 😊

  88. G.... C....

    Brilliance

  89. T.... K....

    Love it!!

  90. L.... M....

I am disappointed that this song was left out of the Rocket Man film

    L.... M....

I agree but can only choose so many. I bet it wasn't easy!

  91. C.... O....

This is amazing partly because it's so early in the song's "life" and I don't think Elton had really even grown into yet and fully embraced how he wanted to present it. Was still toying around a bit. But it's all there.

  92. P.... S....

This is his best song ❤❤❤

  93. r.... p....

This might be my favorite song from Elton and Bernie. I saw Elton, live in Portland, Oregon in 1975. There was no opening act. At 8 pm sharp, he played until 11:40 pm. (with a short intermission) It was amazing.

    r.... p....

    SO JEALOUS!!! Lucky man!

    r.... p....

That's unreal. No wonder he was tired and sick of it by 1976...in the nicest way. He was giving too much of himself in those early years. Not that I'd complain to have seen that!

    r.... p....

    Lucky lucky

    r.... p....

Wow! Would like to have that memory. Good stuff!

  94. w.... ....

God isn't dead. He just thinks you're too needy, so STFU.

  95. T.... ....

    Too much auto tune 😏

  96. m.... a....

I swear this song brings me to tears.

  97. D.... L....

i love quite a few EJ songs..BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if there were no BERNIE TAUPIN ..ej would be a wholly other thing...jus sayin'

  98. g.... 0....

    Timeless talent...

  99. r.... j....

Rocket man brought me here only because it wasnt played in the movie.....

  100. T.... N....

    Gorgeous. Effin'. Music.
